One really bad thing about NBC getting The Open coverage...

Golf Channel is doing the broadcast for rounds 1 & 2, which means you can't watch it unless you've got a cable/dish subscription. All the other majors have independent streaming options.

For us cable-snippers, we're SOL...

Dear PGA/USGA/R&A: please follow the other major sports and get your own channel.

OP - funny you mention this. I was just thinking the exact opposite this morning.

I really appreciate that unlike some tournaments, I can live stream the full broadcast all day at work today and tomorrow - granted I do have a cable subscription or else I'd probably be a little annoyed. Masters and US Open just offer featured groups until the afternoon I think?

You mean like the NFL Network? Which also requires a cable/dish subscription?

Not sure which "major sports" you mean which have their own OTA broadcast channel...

DirecTVnow has streaming packages that include both NBC and GolfChannel. You can watch on almost anything: laptop, phone, through a Roku or Amazon Fire TV device.

Interesting situation to me. You could get basic cable and have the Golf Channel. But you CHOOSE to be a cord cutter and then complain that you cannot watch certain things for free. Is that about it? Seriously. What am I missing here?

Biggest issue for me with all these subscription based mediums is that I still need to watch #€€%/€ commercials. I have already paid for watching!

can't speak for the OP, but I have a "basic" package of supposedly 125 channels. Unfortunately for me, Golf Channel is not one of them. I was able to watch it live-streamed on the net, however.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

Perhaps the GC is not on basic in all areas. But the premise is the same. Many events-sports and otherwise-are not on the traditional over the air networks any longer. Pretty much everything is pay per view if you want to watch live.

My late grandfather hardly got mad about anything. To his dying day (in 2009) he was most angry that "you have to pay for television now" and they still ran commercials.

Yes, he understood he could get an antenna similar to the old days but he liked to watch Baywatch and Magnum PI reruns.

Wow, such love.... and presumption....

FYI, GC is not included in basic cable here.

And I'm willing to pay for watching GC, just not the more than $100 a month to get a second tier service from cable, which would include dozens of crap channels that I don't want.

Perhaps I should have stated that I'm willing to subscribe to a streaming channel - I thought that was obvious from the post. Maybe that would have kept you both from assuming that I'm trying to get something for nothing.

But maybe not.

Basically what you are asking for is what all of us would prefer. To be able to do individual channels ala carte rather than having to buy tiers. That I agree with. We choose cable so far because that is not available. Our bill is laughably high to most people but we get what we want. I will compare it to buying golf equipment new. We know there is a less expensive way but it is easier.

I understand the OP's frustrations but the nature of the golf business requires someone pay for the ability to watch it. NBC paid a lot of money to broadcast The Open and protected their investment by using Golf Channel which is a revenue generator for them by charging cable companies rights to offer it. Golf channel is streamed without commercials so they aren't able to sell commercials to help offset the costs to non-cable subscribers.

you can always get someone else's log in and mooch off them. really show the cable providers whos boss!

On a serious note I think this is the future of television. Cable companies asking for $150+ per month for a ton of channels you dont watch is going to die off soon. I watch about 15 channels and pay for tons and tons of junk. I am at the point where I can get most of those channels without cable and am going to cut the cord end of the month. The 'pay for things you dont use' model will eventually go away (i hope)
