Padraig's Step-Through Swing

Feel free to move/delete. I searched using various terms and couldn't find a thread about this.

Was watching Padraig at The Open and saw his little step through. What do you all think of this? I may try it just for fun.

Is anyone else out there (WRX, pros, whatnot) doing this with success?

Harrington’s right foot step-through may look a little different. But check him out at impact, Malaska says. His position is impeccable. “The problem a lot of amateurs run into is they step through too early so they’re ahead of the ball at impact,” Malaska says. The most common result is a block. Harrington’s step-through happens after he’s struck the shot. He’s properly behind the ball at impact but on his way to a full release.

I step through after impact in an attempt to get thru with my right side, so as not to hang back and slice. It looked to me like he re-positions his left foot also as part of his swing. I don't do that consciously, but I have been told it happens.

When I step through like that, I definitely hit it straighter.

I saw he was doing this last week and gave it a bit of a try in practice. I think it is good for balance and getting your weight forward. It also reminded me to go back to a drill I have previously done- http://www.golfchannel.com/video/swingfix-step-swing-drill/

I have done this for practice swings the last two rounds and hit the ball better than I have all season.

It's not that the step through drill isn't without merit, it is.

But.

Padraig is weird and he likes to do weird things. I think this is him enjoying being eccentric.

In Bob Rotella's books, he tells a lot of stories about Padraig, and after reading those and other feature stories on him over the years, I'd say your assessment is accurate.

I like that he's comfortable showing that side of him.

Now that I have watched that video I remember seeing that before somewhere. Must have stored it away somewhere up there. I don't start with my feet together or the club that far back, but I may try it like that to see if I feel a difference.

I just take my normal stance and swing as freely as I can. On the follow thru I step forward to face the target more fully. Seems to help, when I remember to do it.

I've just recently discovered Mike Malaska videos on youtube and the Be Better Golf channel, and loved the BBG vid I saw where Brendon got a driver drill from Harrington on taking practice swings and trying to hit a divot a foot in front of your ball. This drill immediately improved my driver consistency. And Mike's videos really helped me discover a better swing already too. Will try the walk thru drill too. Good stuff!

I'm finally glad to see a pro golfer doing my move. Not sure why or how i do it but i lift my left foot off the ground exactly like Padraig does.

I don't usually walk thru but i have done it.

If i lift my right heel up slightly i can keep my left foot toes on the ground during the swing.

Glad to see i'm not the only crazy bugger doing this move.

I'm going to have to show a few friends this video.

Thank you Padraig.

I played an entire session like this a few years ago to alleviate back & hip pressure / pain.

I assume it worked?

It did, I played some decent golf. My back and hip got better and I reverted back to a more 'normal' swing. Lately, I just went back to a step through, but mixed with a more back friendly swing.
