Bones in the booth

Saw a couple of posts with reference to Bones as a commentator. Personally, I think he sounded pretty good and a lot more insightful than the other talking heads we hear. For those that have heard him, what's the opinion?...................

I saw a video interview of him right after he and Phil split. Though the volume was down I read the captions and watched his mannerisms. He seems like a pretty insightful guy, also he comes across as pleasant and with a sense of humor. More from a bookish type delivery as oppossed to the arrogant "jock itch" mode. I don't see why he couldn't work out. Be a nice change, even though I don't pay much attention to commentators with my hearing loss.

The guy called the 62 today way before Grace was even threatening. Love him.

Then you saw the extensive discussion already underway.

    He's not in the booth.

He is excellent, and deserves a thread.

He's already the second best on course reporter and it's his first week. If Feherty moves to the booth, then he'll be the best. He's fantastic!

And was able to get a stab in at Johnny Miller when doing it which made it all the more awesome.

I've been watching a good bit of the coverage all three days and i feel like I haven't heard all that much of him but when hes there its meaningful as opposed to some broad statement like others.

The guy's a natural. Great inside info on Kuch's caddie using Aimpoint to read his putts.

Looks like Bones wants to do this instead of loop. That should be a no brainer for him. I guess he'd be the first caddie to crossover(?)

I love how he has perspective. He'd rather have caddied for Phil than be the 100th ranked golfer in the world. I thought that was a fun Q&A on Dan Patrick this week.

Really enjoyed his style so far.

Anyone think that he and Phil went with the 'still caddying' narrative as negotiating power to get him a few more $$$s?

Seems like something they'd think of. Smart if the case.

Anyone hear him tell the story about BW playing Phil back when he was at Georgia?

What would you expect from a Phil Mickelson associate? image/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Bones is awesome.
  • MedicMedic Members Posts: 9,422 ✭✭
Really genuine all the way around. Awesome base knowledge of all things golf, very well spoken, and is able to relate to the audience in my humble. Frankly I liked him WAY better than the other on course commentators.

And the statement he made, smiling ear-to-ear "Tell Johnny there's a 62 out there today" was just classic. As another member noted this was hours before that score was carded.

Lastly I love how he was positive about things but also honest. Miller has a way of coming off like he is superior to the players who go against what he might advise shot-wise. Bones just stated it the way it was. "He had better be careful and just avoid that left side. Nothing good is on the left."

Bottom line - I look forward to seeing and hearing more of him. He's a natural!

A little telling that the guy provides more professional, cogent, and insightful reporting than people who have been doing it for decades and are well compensated for doing it.

Not much for expectations and/but would have been disappointed if he was downright awful, but first go- around Bones is sooooo refreshing. Gives me what I want: Accurate, interesting, trustworthy and germane commentary, on everything from shot strategy to obscure insider perspective regarding a player's tendencies/etc. And last but not least, NO EGO.

Most pleasant development of the year as far as televised golf goes.

Monty called a 62 as well, at the beginning of coverage when he was in the booth with Faldo

Since at least two announcers predicted the 62, it proves Johnny Miller's commentary to be correct, the course was set up too easy for the conditions. That 310-yard par 4 was crazy. Shouldn't have driveable par-4s in a major, especially with a 3-wood

As far as Bones goes, I thought he was great, but they cut him with music once and rarely goit his opinion on things. I like him better than Maltby or Jacobson.
