McIlroy & Spieth: Who achieves the grand slam first?

In light of Spieth's outstanding performance this week, I thought it would be interesting to pose a two part poll vis-a-vis Rory McIlroy. As two of the younger and more exciting talent's in golf, I believe the comparison of their careers is a relevant one. If either of them do:

1) Who will achieve the career grand slam first? and;

2) Who will end up with more majors?

A few year's ago, McIlroy looked untouchable and like he was at least going to comfortably surpass Nick Faldo's European record of six majors. I now believe that McIlroy will not win another major and have thought so for some time. Sure, he finished T4 today, but he was never even close to winning and his game seems to be regressing rather than improving. He also seems to lack the focus and drive he once had and there have always been questions about his mental strength when the going get tough.

Admittedly McIlroy has had to deal with a few off course injuries and distractions this year, but I believe these are being used as excuses to deflect from the state of his game.

Spieth on the other hand seems to go from strength to strength. Sure he's had his fare share of wobbles, but I believe his game is improving (other than perhaps his driving) and he certainly exorcised some demons today.

Both could achieve the grand slam but I believe the prospect of Spieth winning the PGA to be far more likely than McIlroy winning the Masters, where he has demons of his own. I could see Spieth easily reaching 10-12 majors. I predict McIlroy will be stuck on four for the rest of his career.

Thoughts?

I think that the way Spieth bounced back from blowing the lead at The Masters to getting his 3rd leg of the career grand slam the very next year really should convince people of his levelheadedness and his ability to win. Looking back at most of his wins, he seems to make the most of anything that he's dealt. Not only that, but his clutchness is unbelievable, Tiger/Jack esque

Spieth has a bouncebackability that I don't believe McIlroy does. I've never seen McIlroy respond to a rough patch like Spieth did today, and with a major on the line no less. McIlroy just goes into flouncy teenager mode when things don't go his way. He gets his head down and acts like the world's against him.

Spieth also seems to have the advantage of a caddie that can provide genuine mental support when needed. McIlroy's caddie just seems like a wet blanket.

I also think that assuming either will win the Career Grand Slam is a bit insane. The Career Grand Slam has only been achieved by Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.

To assume anyone will achieve it is a bit much. Arnold Palmer never won the PGA Championship and Tom Watson never won the PGA and he had 8 majors behind his name.

It seems obvious that they will because they are so young, but you never know.

Obviously there are no guarantees. Caveat added to original post.

Rory had a free pass to play whatever equipment he wanted and choose to take money from Taylormade. He cares more about money than winning.

Lol that's a stretch.

I'd say he cares about money AND winning. I mean, you wouldn't take the money? They make great equipment that tons of guys use to win tournaments and majors, this isn't nick price signing with goldwin.

I'd take the money too.

I'm betting it will be Spieth!...Rory may have more natural physical ability, but Spieth has more heart and more fire in his belly!

Spieth seems to be able to produce some 'magic' when he needs it most, and that's what it takes to win Major Championships!...

Spieth first. Until Rory's putter starts cooperating then Augusta will be tough.

In true WRX fashion, since Spieth just won and McIlroy hasn't in nearly 3 years, I'll say Jordan will win 22 majors and Rory is done.

Unless Rory wins the PGA. In that case I'll change my prediction to Rory 19 and Jordan 4.

It's so hard to say. Watson and Arnie never won a PGA. Els, Norman, Miller, etc. never won the Masters. If I had to pick I'd say Spieth wins a PGA as it should be easier to win. You either play well at Augusta or you don't. Rory might have issues going forward on the AN greens.

22!! I thought I was being bold by saying 10+ but you never know! He's only turning 24 in a few days. If he plays until he's 40 and wins just one major every two years that's 11 right there. He could definitely have a few more years of winning multiple majors, too. This will be exciting to follow.

They probably will get the slam.

What I noticed the last few years is that you have to shoot the lights out to win the PGA, so for Jordan it's not as easy as it seems.

Rory putting makes the Masters tough, but I think he is bound to get long game hot 1 year and nick 1.

Jordan by sheer force of will no doubt ground out a PGA.

Could take them both a few years. Right now obviously Jordan looks like ending with more majors, but Rory could have a spurt early 30s.

Rory needs to get inspired by Jordan and play smarter as he ages.

I sometimes feel like the PGA is the John Deere on steroids...so I'll go with Spieth.

On another note..if Rory gets hot he is capable of crushing everybody. He has proven that he can lead on Sunday at The Masters...his #10 was like Jordans #12..both have won majors after a meltdown. Rory just seems ..?? preoccupied at the moment??

He won't like Jordan having as many or more majors than him...lol....that may direct his focus a little.

Spieth has a better chance. Rory has a bit of a mental block at The Masters that comes from 2011, but also because he can't deal with the greens there. The problem is that it always returns to Augusta, so you just have to deal with that.

Meanwhile, if Spieth hates a PGA course, it might not return there for 10 years. Having a mental block at the PGA doesn't really happen either, tournament doesn't have really have enough unique identity for that to happen.

I'll take some of that action for Spieth ... I'm sure the betting odds are very much skewed to the side of him getting it vs not.
