Taylormade P790 Irons

Heard the same thing at the Kingdom at Reynolds from the TM fitters. He had not seen them yet, but I was contemplating getting a UDI 4 and 5 irons and he told me to hold off as he thought the idea with the P790 was to provide a little bit bigger 4,5,6 irons with more traditional sized shorter irons. Not sure if that is how it will end up, but he said the guys in San Diego said better players would really love the longer irons.

Why expand on the P750 and P770 lines? I feel if you go any more "GI" than the P770 you're getting into the M1/M2 territories....?

I'd much rather see Rors/Rose Proto come out.

I get what you're saying but the market for an M1/M2 style iron is far greater than a blade. A lot more 20 handicappers out there than scratch players.

According to my buddy who works in the industry and who has spoken to his TM rep....along with the 790's, they're planning to do a limited run of the Rors/Rose proto blades. Don't know anything beyond that, but it'd be pretty cool if they do go that route.

When tiger mentioned TM and he designing a blade for himself is that what the current rose and Rors proto are? Or you think tiger will develop his own blade with different appearance, obviously only so much you can do with a blade.

I would rather see them Proto irons come out than another editon of the P750/770.

Haven't heard anything myself. The P750 and P770 are great clubs. 790 must be new blades?

From what my buddy was told, 790's are of a similar design as the 750 and 770's...but in a larger club head. Supposedly along the lines of the AP3's. The proto blades (not confirmed) would be a separate limited release

They are supposed to be similar to the SLDR irons with our the slot.

Interesting - I wondered if they'd go down the more forgiving route as well as release a blade. Iron testing is sure going to be fun later this year

Idk the answer, but if they had a Tiger-Proto set of blades I would lose my sh*t and order them immediately. Cost would not matter at that point.

The new irons will be more expensive than 750 and 770. They will be a bit bigger and filled with "something" kinda like PXG. They will be a lot like Apex. Good looking clubs that are rockets. At these this is my strong hunch.

I already did that once with the old 681T blades. Had to have them immediately upon release.

Never understood why they discontinued the Tour Preferred UDI utilities so quickly. You couldn't custom order them and only the 4 was available as tour issue. Initially they were only a Vault offering I believe.

In Japan they launched the RSI UDI clubs right after, still see some show up on tour. Seems like a great design and the popularity of utilities is on the rise. I hope these P790 irons are an updated utility/Tour Preferred UDI.

Completely agree. Added the 3 UDI to my bag this season and it's there to stay. Looking for a 4 UDI w/ same specs, no luck. Curious if these p790 will fill that need.

From the Rose Pictures - wasn't there a stamping on the hosel - P730?

If that is the case:

P730 - Blades - Least Forgiving

P750

P770

P790 - Better Player Most Forgiving/Game Improvement

Bingo. I think they will essentially be replacing M1s. The M1s feel and sound terrible even though they perform pretty well. TM knows this, so the new irons will be a much sexier version with more tech, higher price point to get a piece of the PXG and EPIC market. Although I doubt they will be as expensive as either of those.

I'm sure the blades will come out as well but that is not the point of this discussion

to you other point ... I'm pretty sure there is room between the P770 and the M1 for something that goes along the specs of an M1 (or Apex CF16, Ping i200 ...) but is a smaller and better looking package with less offset than the M1

I have lot's of customers that have mediocre swingspeeds and would be better off with more than 4° gaps in their short irons but like the feel of a players club (and actually have the ability to catch the middle of the clubface frequently enough)

Looks like a P790 might be the 2i that I'm looking for...? The P770s have been really impressive. and checks all the boxes for a player's club for me. I would love to play a set of the blades (or even the P750s!) but 1) I'm lefty and TM is still warming up to provideing all-things-lefty 2) I prefer to not be brutalized by an already brutal game. I'm kidding on that last one. I let golf raw-dog me without lube. It's the only explaination that makes sense.
