Flagsticks that Suck

I read somewhere once that Byron Nelson hit the stick on #16 at Augusta twice I think in one tournament, and the balls went in the water. Cost him the Masters.

Only Jack's ball struck the flagstick correctly, all the other shots hit too high. They needed to aim lower.

Line drive right at a player in baseball would be one I can think of.

Surprised Tiger @ the Masters wasn't in there, but I remember Duval during his decline hitting a stick and the ball going in the water... can't remember the tourney, but he just stood there in the FW hands on hips, looking up in the air like "what do I have to do??"

Probably a broadcast rights issue.

Nobody is actually trying to hit the pin though. That would be a stupid thing to try and do as we all know actually doing it could send the ball anywhere. Certain shots may be aimed at the pin but that is different than actually trying to hit the pin.

I think pitching in baseball is a good comparison. Pitchers are trying to throw strikes (trying to hit it at the pin), but too perfect of a strike (dead center) has a high chance of resulting in something bad (homerun). Similar to how too good of a shot aimed at the pin will result in an unpredictable ricochet. A golf shot a foot right of the pin will probably be a better shot in the same way a strike a little right of center will probably be better than right down the middle.

I think Hunter Mahan at the Bethpage US open that Glover won was a really bad one too.

I think it was on #16 and he was within 1 of the lead if i recall. He hits the flagstick on a par 4 and it rolls back off the green probably 50 feet, he ended up making bogey. Could've been a 2 shot swing that maybe cost him a US Open

you don't intend to scratch the ball ... a baseball hit at a player isn't what a hitter tries to do (at least i don't think that's what a hitter is trying to do) ... you are trying to get the ball as close to the hole as possible, but the hole is marked with an object that can have a serious detrimental effect to your intentions ...
