Jason Day's Body & Game

Recommended Posts

Anyone think the reason for the decline in his game maybe due to his obsession with weights? I watched Rick Shiel's interview with he and Rory the other day and listened to him talk about how much he enjoys lifting, and now I'm watching him at Firestone on PGA Tour Live and he's walking around with his chest puffed out doing his best impression of a body builder.

Just a hunch. I'm not necessarily convinced that it is but I think it's worth considering. I look at DJ who is also known for his athleticism and fitness regimine, but in looking at his physique you can tell that his philosophy and approach is a little different and perhaps more suited towards golf.

No. It's due to his excessive and chronic Onanism.

Just my 2 cents .

Until these guys get super hot and ride a heater for awhile we really don't know much off what their training regiment is . For all we know Jason has been doing what he's doing currently for the last 10 years ****but now that he's hot and a great player his sponsors want to show us more of him , the media wants to show us more off him , the tour wants to show us more of him and all in all we'll see more if his everyday life now that he's in the spotlight , than we did 5 years ago .

Peak and Valley is the new norm for the Top guys on tour now.

The schedule in 2nd half of season doesn't help anyone. The top guys figure on playing a lot consecutive events in Aug-Sept, so they take as much time off as possible to stay rested. After taking time off, they come back to Majors and WGC events for their 1st event back.

British Open / Canadian Open / WGC Firestone / PGA Championship in consecutive weeks.

1st round of FedEx Cup 2wks later.

This again?

Jason Day is listed at 6' and 195lbs. He's basically the same size as I am. I lift weights and I run. I'm in pretty good shape.

No one has ever suggested that the reason I didn't play well was because of my obsession with weightlifting and how jacked I am. There are a few reasons for that. 1. Because no one but me cares how I play. 2. Because I'm not jacked. 3. Because it would be ridiculous to think that staying in decent shape is bad for an athletic endeavor.

I think the people who are suggesting that Day, Rory, whoever are jacked may be confusing being big with wearing tight shirts. Maybe all along it's been the epidemic of tight shirts that has been causing all this bad play!

He is no bigger than he was in his peak

It's crazy when I hear stuff like tiger ruined himself working out and got too big ( that was 2000-2002 he hardly struggled through and beyond that period )

I think the weightlifting has everything to do with Rory's and Jason's short game decline. It seems to me that those are the factors holding them back - especially Rory and his putting.

I used to do a lot of power and olympic lifting. Got my clean and jerk and my squat to respectable levels, and my golf game was horrendous inside 50 yards. Since I've stopped, my short game has gotten back to what it was when I was a skinny little punk on the high school golf team.

I can't speak to Jason's routine, but rory looks like he does quite a bit of the power lifts. Those lifts make your muscles want to act like a trap door, and that isn't very conducive to the finer touch points required in golf.

Never heard this expression before. Could you explain in layman's terms? Thanks!

Obviously Day is a fit and solid athlete. However, he is not "big" in person. His smedium's, tv, and announcers like Lerner and McCord feeding us the linebacker propaganda create illusions. It always surprises me how much smaller some players are in person compared to TV. Got the chance to go to a practice round at Augusta this year (first time) and was chillin behind 11 tee box (awesome vantage point) about 4 feet from players as they teed off. As Mathew Fitzpatrick was approaching the box from a distance I could have sworn he was 13 or 14. He then proceeds to produce more speed and the loudest crack off the club face I have ever heard from someone that small. It made my wife jump as she just didn't realize that kind of speed could be generated from that frame. I know, not a high speed player by tour standards. Lot of fun to watch though, kind of like Spud Webb throwing down in dunk competitions of the past. I saw Day earlier in the morning and immediately picked him out from a distance by the strut and wet suit but said, "nah, too small to be Day" but it was. Most look bigger on TV.

people need to understand this, lifting weights can be very beneficial for your back. Your strengthening the muscles around the spine, when you have strong muscles supporting your spine, your less likely to have disc problems etc. Which is why you see overweight, out of shape people with the most back problems. You run into problems with bad form and trying to do super heavy stuff in the process, which I don't think Tiger or Jason were doing, other reason's why they might run into injuries like the amount of speed they swing and technique.

he's the same size today he was in 2015 ... i've always thought he was a bit too big in the chest/shoulders, though ... he apparently is either a very good putter or a very bad putter ...

He looks as if he got fascinated with bench press. I've never understood why anyone would take bench over OHP.

All true. But don't you think that swinging out of your shoes like day goes hand in hand with the meat head attitude a guy has when he lifts so he can squeeze into his men's medium shirts and strut around. I think that's the ops point.
