"I'll let you do this if you want to do it"

saaaayyyyy whaaaat?

yeah, i didn't quite understand that ... i'm sure there's quite a bit of nuance to the player/caddie conversation, but if you want to hit 3 wood, you don't need the caddie's permission ...

As I watched that exchange unfold I couldn't help but think too many guys get too much input from their caddies. Let the player decide how he wants to play, and what types of shots he should hit.

Heres the thing, players tell their caddies pre tourney and in general to insist they stick to a plan or step in when im being stubborn etc... Under the gun the player will say give me driver or im going for it and the caddy steps in as agreed before and says his piece to walk him off the ledge so to speak. tell a player he cant do something and watch the sparks fly. In this case im sure the caddy was thinking fedex cup points, $, presidents cup/ryder cup points etc.. in other words protecting his player. Hoffman overruled him and pulled it off and still didnt make birdie...

exactly how it works.. player is still in control... but he has set up limits before hand... and what you saw was caddie doing his job as ordered by Hoffman....

that being said ... i had a 70 something year old man tell me today that hoffman looks just like the dad from Family Guy..... lol said " put a flatbilled hat on the family guy and its Hoffman."... lol i cracked up... mostly because of who was telling me this.. but also because its true !

That five iron from 228 was savage hoffGOAT

Not quite. He was 282 yards out and hit a fairway metal over the green. Watch the video.

From Pgatour.com

  • Shot 2 298 yds to right rough, 51 ft 3 in. to hole
  • Shot 1 369 yds to left intermediate, 282 yds to hole

Don't mean to confuse, but I'm talking about the par 3

I think there's alot of different relationships out there. Some bag men just schlep the clubs and keep them clean and dry, others read putts, pull clubs and dictate pre-agreed strategy. Irrespective of what the Hoff wanted to do. I respect and appreciate (at least) that the caddie was trying to highlight that it was a high tariff shot. Bones did this 3-4 times a round with The Thrill. They had to start a veto programme remember.

Sometimes stepping in across the boss could get you fired from a bag out there. Other times, if the player has at least heard another view they might have got their hand on a trophy. I can think of maybe half a dozen examples. For caddies it's always "we" when they win, and "I" when they lose.

Maybe if he added 150 pounds he'd look like the family guy dad. As for now, to me he looks like jeff Daniels from dumb and dumber.

He's tired of finishing second? Mission accomplished. He finished third.

Hey!

No making fun of the Hoff. He is trying hard and has enough pressure. You should be encouraging, you know.

; )

Charley's been knocking on the door for weeks and I'm sure he's tired of coming up short. He felt he needed to take a chance and put playing conservatively off to the side. It was his choice, and don't blame for him for overruling his man. I was impressed he nuked it over the green. It didn't work out, but I give him credit out there. It's hard to win out there.

Some people are giving him a hard time for going at it. It could have been a defining moment in the tournament, what if he hit it 2 feet from the pin and then putted for eagle? He said he was trying to win, yes FedEx cup points are there, money, etc.... He is tired of being second!!! Not many people on earth have enough balls to act, to realize when a moment that can change something for the better and do it. So he went over and made par, sure he could of laid up and made birdy, but and eagle would have changed the way he felt, he was trying to slay the dragon and had the guts to try.

How about when Jordan said I am going to try something stupid. No one gave him crap for that, he did pull it off, but if he hit it into the trees then no big deal? Give Hoff some MAN credit!!!

I love Charlie. He was the first tour pro I saw play. I went to Colonial in Fort Worth, walked to #17 tee box and there's this surfer looking dude with long hair about to tee off and i'm like, "who in the f*** is this guy?" I love the way he plays. All of that said, he didn't pull off the shot. He could have easily dunked it into the pond and still made par. He hit it into a terrible position and couldn't get up and down for a birdie. There's zero chance he's holding that green from 270 and had to hit the first two fee of it just to roll to the back fringe. Caddie was right.
