Michelle Wie, an 11-wood?

Recommended Posts

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/wies-secret-weapons-9-wood-and-11-wood/

This switch seems to go against the orthodox notions of playing golf in Scotland. What's odd is that the Epic 9-wood is supposedly 24° and the XR 11-wood is supposedly 25°. I wonder if she plays them at those lofts (I get different results from my old Steelhead 3 and 5 woods even though they're only one and a half degrees different).

It was unorthodox, but it worked for her. She's not a short-knocker, being just at 6 feet tall, so she deduced that carry was going to be much more important than roll. Who knows if she will keep them in the bag, but it's not a bad idea for many folks, myself included.

I'm probably going to put a G400 9-wood in my bag this year. It's time to go back to what I know.

For me, I needed clubs I could hit further than my 7-iron.

She is a train wreck. Every shot looks like a contortionist taught her.

And yet it works.

Unorthodox...seriously? It matters not what clubs are in the bag, as long as they're legal & they get the job done for the person playing them.

I'll take 3rd place and a bag full o money and look like her. Sign me up.

This is going to be an extremely unpopular opinion but I believe that Michelle succeeds in spite of her shenanigans, not because of them. I also believe that she is performing well short of her potential. Years ago many people believed she was destined for greatness. Now those same people seem to applaud any middling success. What happened?

I am not even a fan but I still consider her an elite ballstriker and one of the greatest natural talents on the LPGA. I don't think its so wrong to hold Michelle up to a high standard. People go on about how Paula Creamer hasn't won in ages, meanwhile Michelle's drought is even longer, and she is way more talented than Paula.

Actually didn't Michelle win a few months after Creamer's last? 2014 HSBC versus 2014 US Womens Open.

But regardless I really feel that the Wie bashing-or McIlroy-or Couples for that matter is based more on what we the fans wanted them to do than what the players themselves wanted. We see ballstriking talent and predict great things based on what we see. What we do not see is the players desire. I have always been a fan of Wie but I do not think there was ever a time she wanted to be the best LPGA player on tour. She was always too inquisitive about other opportunities. The mens tour debacle for example. The college experience as another. IMO their is nothing inherently wrong with any of that. She just just had different desires than we thought she should. Some players are driven to be the best and others are driven to just experience life.

She has probably been injured more than any golfer in history short of Tiger. Now has she tinkered because she's injured or is she injured because of her tinkering?

I think some get "scared off" by the high club numbers on these. If you forget about the number and just think of the loft, it can help bring things into a more real view. For example, a 24* wood vs calling it a 9 wood.

Back in the day today's 9 wood loft was called a 6 wood and today's 11 wood was called a 7 wood. It's odd how at some point, they decided to skip club numbers with woods. Makes things seem more extreme than they really are

High lofted fairways can seriously make the game easier. That was my old KZG 9 wood. 27 degrees. I knew when I absolutely had to cover 200 yards, I had it in spades.
