Need new ball (coming from TF D2 FEEL)

Recommended Posts

I would like soft feel, moderate spin, improved distance off driver.
I've been gaming the TOP FLITE D2 Feel ever since it came out.
I was using a gift dozen of Titleist ProV1X's prior to that.
The transition wasn't smooth, though.
The D2 felt good off all clubs including putter, spin was a joke compared to the ProV1X.

My swing fell apart in 07. I was all over the place, nowhere near consistent.
It seemed like something in my swing was changing every time i went to the range or hit the course.
Thus, i was never able to monitor ball performance on a shot-by-shot basis.

With some very intense self-analysis and some tips from teaching pro buddies, i've gotten into a great groove once again.
This has allowed me to monitor ball-flight, distance, and spin characteristics for each shot.
My last round, i gamed a sleeve of Callaway Warbirds, a noticeably harder ball vs the TF D2 Feel.

I couldn't get over how much more distance i got with the Warbirds.
Looking back on it now, on similar drives i was almost netting another 30 yards with the Warbird.
To me, the difference in spin level between the two balls is almost negligible.
However, the hardness of the Warbirds is not too appealing and so although i'm looking to switch, it won't be to those.

So i ask the lot of you, as i've done plenty of searches but have found suggestions that go back and forth.

I'm looking for a ball that will have these characteristics:
1)Good distance off Driver
2)Moderate spin off wedges and short irons
3)Soft feel for putting

So far, the candidates of lined up are:
1) Taylormade TP Black
2) Bridgestone e5
3) Titleist NXT Tour
4) TopFlite Gamer

Let me know what you all think.
i'm open to all comments and input, especially for those that have once gamed the TF D2 Feel.

Thanks in advance, swing em well!

HX Hot Bite

Β

have put the first two in play on the course and they seem to fit your requirements. low spin off the tee, soft feel off every club including putter and moderate spin around the greens.

Β

haven't gamed the Bite but if it has improved on the feel and spin around the greens over the HX Hot (which is LONG off the tee), it should fit the bill as well.

I've also been evaluating several balls in the mid spin softer feel range (TF D2 Feel, Wilson 50 and Noodle Plus). I currently have the D2 feel as my gamer and like it on and around the greens - doesn't spin back or anything but much better feel for short wedges, chipping and putting - but similar to you I am worried about distance compared to my previous hard ball the Precept Laddie. I've been playing mostly in cool or windy weather so far this year so it is hard to say for sure yet on the distance. Have you considered the Noodle Plus ?

Surprised that no one (I might be blind, though) mentioned the TP Red yet.

Β

I haven't used the Black yet, so I can't compare the Red to the Black. But based on what everyone else has said in the Black vs Red threads, the Red appears to be what you want.

Β

Now, I've been known to spin the ball too much (more of a D2 issue, and a bit of flip thrown in there), and the TP Red is supposed to be lower spinning. This may or may not be good for you, but it's great for me. This ball is soft feeling, goes forever off the driver, and checks moderately well on greens. This sounds like your exact criteria.

Β

I have used the NOB a decent amount lately, and I'd say that they do NOT have the soft feel you're looking for. They also aren't as long as the Red, I'd say.

Β

I'd try the TM TP Red if I were you.

I haven't yet gamed them, but the Maxfli Tour Fire/Taylormade Burner TP is in the same class I believe.

I am testing out Taylor Made Burner TP, Bridgestone e5+, and Top Flite Gamer. I have not played much yet, but here are my thoughts:

Β

1) Gamer is not all that durable. Wedges eat them up.

2) All of them feel about the same.

3) The Burner TP is giving me the most greenside spin. The e5+ and the gamer do not grab as much. I hit a little flop shot on Tuesday with the Burner TP. Greens are still hard and kinda cold, and it hit and grabbed. Stopped on a dime.

Β

So far the Burner is winning. I plan on going through a full dozen of each of them before I make my final desicion.

I tried the Gamer ($20 a dozen) and thought it was good on distance and ok on spin. Looking forward to trying the HX HOT Bite next. Would like to see just a little more spin.

I was exactly like you. Going from Titleist Pro V1 which I still really like, but then liking the D2 Feel for a while (your right the spin is a joke, but they have a particularly nice feel around the greens and with the putter). I then tried some of the Wilson Balls for an experiment (felt to hard).

Β

TP Black it is. Started using them about 2 months ago and they seem to be exactly what I need in a ball. Long, soft enough, nice flight in the wind, don't mark up to bad even when attacking them with Vokey SM's and Callaway MD's, and good spin.

Β

A great ball.

The Nike One Black for a primium ball.

Β

But the Nike Ignite is a GREAT ball for what you are looking for. Comparable to others you have listed. Great distance and low spin off the tee. Decent spin into the greens, and around them. not a bad price either.
