Putter Fitting

So I have a Yes! Tracy putter that I've always used for 8 years mainly because of money. Now I'm able to upgrade and it couldn't come at a better time seeing as my putting has been horrendous.

I have never seen a putter fitting happen but obviously I know they exist. Has anyone ever went thru a putter fitting and has it changed what style of putter you use (ie Blade to Mallet)

What exactly can they test during the fitting.

Thanks

Just did one. I used at Rife Abaco, which is a heel shaft ~80* toe hang putter kind of like a Scotty Del Mar. Putter had about 1.5* loft.

The fitting is really cool, you get your putter zero'd in on the machine that uses ultrasound to measure everything movement related. I hit about 10 putts to warm up. Then you hit 7or 8 putts that get measured.

First thing was my misses were to the right and was evident by open face at impact. Fitter described that my current putter with a lot of toe hang was allowing me to open blade on way back but not square at impact. He recommended a 45* toe hang putter. Basically this means an anser style putter with a plumbers neck. I have not gamed one of these putters for 15 years and always went to mallets or heel shafted styles. Maybe that is why my putting sucks, haha

I also learned that a standard lie of 70* is not for me. I always putt with heel up and have been told that. So I need a putter with 73* loft.

Then they test for length of putter, 34.5" is perfect for me

Then most importantly they test to see if your getting a good roll on the ball. Face angle at impact vs amount of rise in club. I add loft in my stroke so I need 1* loft.

It's hard to find a putter that you can custom besides getting one bent or doing yourself. I did not want to go custom Scotty route beacuse of the $$$. I found a great compromise. Cleveland golf Huntington Beach putters. I custom ordered at #4 model with my specs for $109 shipped. Not bad.

Taylormade M6, 9.0* head set -1.5*, Nippon Regio B+ shaft, 65 stiff at 45.5"
Cobra FLY Z+ 3 wood, orange, aldila tour blue stiff, 14.5*
Sub 70 939x, 3H(18*), Proforce V2 85 stiff
Sub 70 939x, 4H(21*), Proforce V2 85 stiff
Sub 70 699 Pros, 5-AW, Modus 120 stiff
PING glide 2.0, 54*

Taylormade MG3, 58* HB
Scotty Select Newport, 73* lie, 1* loft, 34" (Testing Taylormade Bandon 1)
Bridgestone Tour BX (Alternate ball VICE PRO)

This is very interesting to me, seems like a very cool process to go thru.

Kind of excited to go and do this now haha

putter fitting will first fit length to the coachable fundamentals of set up and posture (95% of putter fitting).

http://www.pga.com/golf-instruction/instruction-feature/putting/basics-putting

get the length right and the lie angle for most gofers will be about 72°, regardless of stature. This may vary a couple of degrees but this lie angle is best suited to almost every golfer using a conventional stroke.

Changing the lie angle to fit an unconventional stroke or bad posture is only a crutch that will only prevent a good stroke.

Next, pick a head shape that fits your forgiveness requirement. If you can consistently hit the sweetspot then a heel-toe design might be for you (or maybe you just like the challenge). But for the rest of us, look for a larger size to enhance the MOI (resistence to twisting from off-center hits) for greater accuracy and distance control.

I would also recommend a face balanced putter to prevent the face from opening on the forward swing (which a toe down design has a slight tendency to do) and learn to swing the putter on plane. (the other 5 %)

Select a comfortable grip size that feels good, 350g head weight, and a well designed 3-4° loft and 72° lie angle.

Thats most of it.

Hope this helps

interesting ok I work at a golf shop around where I live and have been messing around w/ the Futura & Spiders and they feel better weight wise and I don't mind the look of them at address.

My putter now is the YES! Tracy @34 Inches w a Super Stroke 3.0 slim on it. I put 3 pieces of lead tape on the putter and that's helped me over the past 2 months or so

I've always been leaning towards blades but I've also never been a very super consistent putter so that could have something to do w/ that

Thanks for your help

Doesn't sound like a putter fitting but sounds like you're changing someone into your method. Putter fittings work best because they fit to someone's existing stroke and posture. Not everyone wants to nor do they have time to practice and work on the way you want them to setup- not to mention rough on the back. Make a putter that works best with how you already do it.

the problem is saying 'try different fitters' this tells me its not an exact science and the fitters could put me into completely different setups. i think this is why sometimes people hesitate dropping a hundred or more dollars on a fitting is they arent confident that one fitters ideal setup would be the same to another fitters setup.

it seems like the SAM Lab is the best fitting process?

Club fitting is not a perfect science and if you went to a fitter who told you it is, run bc he's a liar. You could get three different setups from three different fitters but does that surprise you? You (and most everyone else) probably don't have a perfect golf swing, so if fitting was a perfect science, you'd be sol. Each company makes great products, but I'd be willing to bet you'd get very similar characteristics in everything.

not trying to be a black helicopter guy...but,

was fit at CC with SAM

Tried my putter first...I noticed the SAM piece that he put on my putter was not square...no problem he says.

You are so off in you alignment with that putter...here, try the Bettinardi (SAM piece on square)

Look how much better your numbers are...OK, take my money.

Bettinardi did not last 2 rounds. Back to my old putter and still making lots of putts.

can they manipulate the numbers with the alignment pieces? or am I barking up the wrong tree. Set my mind at ease...

Yup. Did SAM lab fitting at Club Champion. Went from a face balanced mallet to a big toe hang blade.

They basically see how you putt the ball and suggest you a type of putter, how much toe hang, what loft, what lie, what length and even grip size.

Would it have been better if it were square? Maybe. But the Triplett not being perfectly square didn't skew your data.

the machine calibrates to square right before you start recording data so it doesn't matter that the piece was not 100% square. Only if he calibrated it and then manipulated the triplet mid session (7 putts)after calibration.
