Wilson Staff equipment - good or bad?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know Wilson Golf have two ranges of equipment - the 'Wilson' and 'Wilson Staff' ranges.

I understand the 'Wilson' range is basic equipment and not of good quality, often sold in discount/wholesale stores. Is this the same for the 'Wilson Staff' range?

I often see Wilson Staff products a little cheaper than the likes of Titleist, Ping, Callaway, etc.. so I'm wondering if it because they are inferior quality or if it just because of the brand image? You don't see many Wilson Staff players on tour. Is this due to the insiders know the products aren't of good quality.

Is there much difference between Wilson Staff, Titliest, Ping, Callaway, Mizuno (the list could go on) when it comes to irons, drivers, wedges, balls?

Thanks.

I think you have to look at each line or set of clubs individually.

I've tried W/S this season. Had a Triton driver, FG Tour F5 iron set, FG Tour F5 hybrids, and PMP wedges.

I really liked the Triton driver, but ended up getting rid of it. So many adjustments, I was just always messing with it and tinkering rather than working on the swing. Not the club's fault, I just decided to go to something with less gizmos.

The FG Tour F5 irons did not feel that great (to me). I got them on closeout here in the US, definitely not my favorite irons I tried out this year. Felt harsh, light, and cheap compared to other manufacturers.

The FG Tour F5 hybrid fit me well! Felt nice, repeatable shot trajectory, and worked really well from all sorts of nasty lies.

The PMP wedges were simply dreadful (to me). Heavy, not terribly well balanced, harsh. I just plain didn't get along with them at all.

Overall I wasn't overly impressed. Trade in values were lower on the W/S stuff as well, so I ended up costing myself a bit in those experiments where the more popular brands are easier to sell/trade if you dislike them. It will take a special offering to get me to jump back on the W/S bus and try them again.

The Wilson Staff line has gotten a ton of praise from reviews online and seems to be high quality equipment. If you're going to test new clubs, why not give them a try? I've heard great things about their new driver (triton), irons (FG Tour F7), and ball. I tried the Duo Urethane this weekend and loved it.

Also, they have new stuff slated for release in January 2018 I believe.

Wilson Staff fan here. I play the Fg Tour F5 driver and 5 wood. The FG Tour v6 irons have received high praise pretty much everywhere, and they are on my short list when considering new irons. There is a thread in this forum for Wilson Staff fans as well.

I play the FG Tour v6's and really like them. I appreciate the weaker lofts, but the feel from the forged heads sold them for me

Although they don't get a lot of praise, W/S makes great products. What they don't do however,is release new products ever time one turns around at astronomical prices like some OEMs are doing. They don't spend a ton of money on tour or flashy advertising either. Do yourself a favor and demo their equipment, you might be surprised.

The FG Tour M3 hybrid and PMP wedges in my bag are as good as anything out there. Following the demise of Nike and Cleveland our pro shop started selling Ping, Titleist and Wilson Staff. Talking to the pro the other week he was telling me how surprised he was at how well the Wilson Staff lines are going. They are outselling Titleist and Ping at a rate of 3:1. Yes, partly it is due to the lower price point but also to the value for money. V6s and PMP wedges are particularly popular.

The FG Tour M3 irons are also solid performers. Great forged irons!

I did demo the triton driver and hated it. It just flat out underperformed for me. And the rep out there for the demo day tried so many damn settings, but nothing worked. The old driver in my bag beat it out.

Wilson makes fantastic clubs, top quality equipment. However, due to marketing and brand perception they simply cannot price themselves along the lines of the big 4 and be competitive, thus they have to price themselves lower to appeal to those who care as much about value as brand name. You don't see much of them on tour because they don't have the wallet to pay what the other brands do.

I can't wait for Richard (Forged4Ever) to chime in here. The man is an absolute expert on all things Staff!

Staff equipment has always been some of the best equipment on the market. They have half-a-dozen irons that are iconic. They did themselves a disservice some years ago by not keeping the boxed sets and "Wilson" branding away from "Staff" and it hurt the "Staff" brand. The V series irons and PMP wedges are exceptional and can hold their own with any other product on the market!

I say all of that knowing full well, opinions are like a*******........... At the end of the day, we all have differing opinions, aesthetics preferences and feel. To each their own but I love Staff equipment!

I bought my FG tour V5 irons about three months ago and though I know it's not completely the irons fault, I've had some of my best scores with them. The V5s are smooth and just worked for me. They also already came to me with my specs after testing them out. They're insanely underrated.

The V6 irons felt great when I played them on the monitor but, between them and the new MP18s, I had to go mizuno as I've never owned a set and they felt better.

I have used the duo urethane bale and those are so underrated and looked over that it's ridiculous. They are seriously some of the best balls on the market.

Woods and drivers I can't comment on.

In conclusion, draw your own opinions up for yourself. A lot of s*** works for people that others hate. I.e., I can't stand Taylor made m2 drivers but love their rescues.

Couldn't agree more here. Usually play a Pro V1 and experimented with a TP5 for awhile. I played one round with the Duo U and it was phenomenal. Super soft off of the irons and putter. You could feel the compression off of the driver. Performance was great. At that price point vs Titleist or Taylormade, I'll put the Duo U's in the bag.

Staff is top notch. They have a bad name now since the short stint of selling crap a while back. But they produce great things now. Best looking blades out there with the fg 100 and fg62. And awesome wedge line with the pmp. Saw there new iRon line yesterday when I met the regional rep. And they look awesome.

I do think the driver vs driver tv show makes Wilson look cheap and gimmicky. It's like they're admitting they are lost, yet asking the group of blind men for direction.

I bought some used P I 5 irons recently, very nice cb set.

I had too many irons so sold at a profit.

Think they were stainless steel, so not super soft but not firm either.

Love the Duo ball

I've owned Di11s, D100s, and C200s. All fantastic clubs that I was able to pick up for a great price. I've played with others who game their older irons and have no desire to try anything new since they shoot repeatable low scores with them.

The Duo is one of the best low compression balls you'll find. Great all around. They don't have the marketing budget or tour presence that other larger OEMs have, but that doesn't mean that they can't keep up with them on a quality level.

Saying that Wilson Staff can't be good because they have a lower priced, widely available line in Wilson is like saying Lexus can't be good because they have a lower priced, widely available line in Toyota.

I love the V4 irons and definitely love their FG Tour X Golf Ball...I am lucky to have a Wilson rep in one our local stores, I demoed both the V4 and V6 irons, I enjoyed the V4s better, but that is not to say the V6s are not good, they are amazing as well, but I was most impressed with the FG Tour X ball (the rep is able to get those for me), all around great performance...

I think they are incredibly underrated.

I find the entire FG Tour F5 line really freaking good, outside of the driver. I game the 4 wood and hybrid and love both of them. I have hit the Triton and thought that was really good too. I spent a good bit of time with the C200s and they are some of the best game improvement irons I have hit. Silly forgiving, silly long.

I also played the Ci11 and I thought those were really good too.

Havent spent much time with any of the wedges, so I cannot comment on them.

Their golf balls are as good as they get... 50 elite, Duo, Duo Spin, Duo U, FG Tour are all really good golf balls and hit a homerun for their target audience.

Great feedback, thanks.

I can be assured that Wilson Staff make some good products.

Its amazing the power of marketing has. In fact, would you say to ignore the golf magazines and websites spill as its all promoted based on the dollar (i.e. the more money the manufacturer pays the magazine the better the review will be)?

Have just put the FG Tour V4's in to play which I picked up brand new for less than half the price of the V6's (with the DG Pro s300's). Very nice clubs, the finish is top notch, the feel is good, they sit very nice behind the ball with a compact but not scary look. I'll change the grips as I'm not a fan of the stock ones. The standout is the distance control in the mid irons so far for me (2 rounds, 3 range sessions). Played in howling wind on Wednesday and if it wasn't for two disaster holes I would have broken 80 (I play off 12). Looking forward to how my practice goes through the wet/cold/rainy English winter!

In the UK they seem to have a better reputation than the US - you'll always spot a few sets of ci's or fg's in the bags of people on a busy Saturday morning. Give them a try - you might like them.
