Jack's Rolex

I'm on WRX everyday. I'm also on Hodinkee everyday and this article/video with Jack was really interesting. The video is about 8 minutes long and Jack tells some wonderful stories about his career and life. Enjoy!

I'm in the same boat with being on both sites almost every day. I can only imagine what some of the other stories that could have been told in this that more than likely could have filled up well over an hour of time!

The story Jack told about the Marlin and about his moneyclip were so cool. The guy has lived so much life it would take a very long time to talk it all through.

Jack is a cool dude. That is a cool story too. One watch ... wow.

If I can ever afford to buy a Rolex maybe I'll want to wear it for 60 years too. I thought it was kind of funny that Jack never really seemed to be into watches yet he worn the thing most of his adult life.

Thanks for the post. I had no idea it's the ONLY watch he's ever owned and he's basically worn it every day of his adult life.

I can't fathom how much it would be worth at auction.

My dad bought one just like it because Jack had one. Now I have it as my dad passed away far too early at 56.

It's unequivocally my most valued personal possession.

I can see why that watch would be so special to you. Enjoy it as long as you can.

Even though I can't afford luxury watches I do admire them and keep up with what the manufactures are doing. Hodinkee, and the interviewer Ben Clymer, are some of the foremost experts in all things high-end watches and Ben even says in the video that Jack's Rolex is one of the most important sports-related watches of all time.

Its very Jack. He found something excellent that consistently performs and he stuck with it.

Unlike some people ; )

I see what you did there. No arguments from me.

I bought my Rolex back in the early eighties and still wear it near daily. I have it serviced every 2yrs, never a problem. While trendy watch come and go, mine still gets compliments. Never wear it playing golf though, due to the self-winding mechanism. :beach:

How do I convince my wife that I need a Rolex?

Very cool. For me watches are like clubs, I seem to own more than I need. Maybe if I would have started with a Rolex it would have saved me long term.

Jack must be the easiest athlete Rolex has sponsored. Year 1: Hey Jack we'd like to sponsor you and give you some pieces from our collection. "Okay, but I already have my watch."

Year 40: Jack, you want any new watches. "Naw, I'm good."

Go buy one, explain how it's an investment as they tend to hold their value and eventually appreciate, just keep wearing it all the time and get it serviced every couple of years. I have 2, and really almost never wear them since I prefer my other pieces more, but when I do wear them I always get compliments on them.

Great video! I have a nice dress watch I got as a Xmas gift from a very young daughter many years ago (mommy paid for it) and a plain Swiss Army Watch I'd wear hunting and fishing I got before that (why the wife thought I should wear something different to work). Can't remember the last time I wore either. Cell phone and clocks on computers and in cars and I can't get away from knowing what the damn time is. Very sadly, my wife's mother gave my wife her Rolex shortly before she passed away last Spring from an unexpected and brief onset of cancer. Would mean just as much to her if it was a Timex, and her mom wasn't an ostentatious person by any means, but at some point she decided she needed a darn good watch and treated herself to that.

My dad and Jack are not too far apart in age and Jack's story is very reflective of a Midwest (or just that generation anywhere and their upbringing) kind of ethic I think a lot of us will recognize in parents and grandparents.

Very well said, sorry for the loss in your family. I'm sure the watch will be cherished for a very long time.

I saw this interview on my feed yesterday and clicked on it in a heartbeat. I love Jack Nicklaus and have long admired his Rolex Day/Date. I knew he nearly always had one on his wrist in interviews and photos but didn't know it was the same one every time. I wish Ben had asked him about it's service history. I wonder how many times it's been serviced.

Sadly the yellow gold Day/Date is more associated with drug dealers today than sports titans. I've always wanted one but don't want the negative association that comes with it today. So I went with the tamed down/poor man's Day/Date--the 36mm steel DateJust.

I know what you mean but it's like Jack was born to wear that watch, don't you think?

No, I wish. Playing there is #1 on my bucket list. I see him when I go to the Memorial and if he happens to do anything else publicly in the area.

I see. My dad had a short assignment at Wright Patterson so all I can say is I've been within 65 miles of M.V.
