Best Windproof Jacket/Pullover

buckI

Recommended Posts

I know there have been some posts on this in the past and the Mizuno was a hands down winner. I don't think they still make it. I did have a Zero Restriction Highland jacket that was pretty good but looking for something that will really cut the wind.

Any thoughts?

I'm a gore windstopper fan. I have a ZR & a galvin green; got both on the cheap on Amazon closeout. I think under armor has one or used to at least. I prefer windstopper over my mizuno sweaters as they breathe much better & the mizuno are too blasted hot for all but the coldest days.

I'll look at those. I love my ZR Stealth for rain.

Anyone try Foot Joy wind shirts?

I have 5-6 footjoy jackets. Full zip winters, 1/4 zip long sleeve rains, and a couple of half sleeve 1/4 zip wind shirts.

The wind shirts are my favorite. Super comfortable.

Don’t forget to check eBay and the online golf retailers (RBG, Global Golf, etc). One of them had Windlites on close out a year or two ago and you still might be able find some. And they’re probably cheap now.

I can’t speak to the other ones mentioned as I’ve never tried them. I’m sure they’re excellent too. But everything you’ve read about the Windlite is true. 45* here today, lightish breezes (10-15mph). A light mock turtle neck and the Windlite and I was actually a little too warm.

Obviously I’ve had all of the Mizzy stuff, even a couple of Tour wind shirts and a jacket that weren’t available to the public and they still don’t touch Zero Restriction.

I’ve been wearin their stuff for over two decades and I’ve gotta couple of wind shirts and a vest from the first year that I wore em and they still look and function great.

Great lookin, durable as hell & TRUE TO SIZE!!!

Hell, I wear ZR XL stuff and with Mizzy I had to get XXXL, lmao

Mizzy’s sizing is a friggin disgrace.

I realize that they’re a Japanese company and all, but WTF, are their XL’s over there 5’6” or 5’7”, a buck seventy???

As always, just my .03 worth?

Cheers?

G7722-77-1.jpg?1501107103Galvin Green Bruce Windstopper. You can thank me later.

You think it's that windproof? I love the styling of mine, but I've been quite disappointed in it's windproofing abilities vs. some of the other Windstopper Galvin Green products I've used.

Played today in 25 mph winds from the North and 41 degrees with only a short sleeve FJ shirt underneath and never felt the first breeze. You must be really thin skinned or cold natured.

Last year I purchased a Mizuno Hayate sweater from Amazon for my wife. When it arrived the inside label at the rear neck said Windlite Plus just like my sweaters that are a few years old. It seems to be pretty much the same. They can't be beat for efficiency in colder temperatures.

When it's low 50's and breezy the Zero Restriction Windstopper (Gore technology) products work great over just a quality UA base layer. I have several in various weights. The lightweight ones (essentially a high-tech windbreaker) do a great job of keeping the wind out. When it gets colder I have a couple heavier weight Windstoppers that work great over the Mizuno Windlite sweaters or by themselves if sunny and no breeze.

Interesting. I can feel breeze come right through it. I'm referring to the non insulated areas of the jacket. The under side of the arms and the back. Again, I love the styling and looks of the jacket. It's just that I have to wear long sleeves under it or I feel everything. Which is totally unlike any other Galvin Green Windstopper top that I have used.

Doesn't seem to feel that way to me, but I guess we're all different. Since you continually tell us about how vast your collection of stuff is, perhaps you could give some insight by actually answering the original question of the OP.

chris975 recommended Ping Norse in a thread, i went ahead and bought it. i played 18 the other day with it in the high 30s low 40s, and everything he said about the jacket was bang on. (still hate the collar though). So yea, ill continually listen to him because of his vast collection of stuff.

Sorry, well, as bunta said above, the PING Norse is by far the best I've found if anyone is wanting a single, stand-alone layer that will keep you warm in about any cold you can play in, with minimal layers (often just a short sleeve polo) underneath. And the damn thing is so light and "airy" that you just forget it's on...unless you walk inside, then you'll notice because you'll get hot as fire in just a few moments.

There's a few Ralph Lauren/Polo items I've found as well. One is here:

https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-jackets-coats-vests/fleece-mockneck-jacket/397907.html?cgid=men-clothing-jackets-coats-vests&webcat=men%2Ftops%2FJackets%20%20%20Coats&dwvar397907_colorname=Polo%20Black#prefn1=brand&prefv1=Polo+Ralph+Lauren&start=1&cgid=men-clothing-jackets-coats-vests

Another that I can't find at the moment is a "hybrid" style, with quiliting/insulation on the chest and back, and not on the long sleeves. Very similar to the Nike AeroLoft jackets, but much more comfortable to wear. I have that in all black, and like it as well.

Also, any of the (other) Galvin Green Windstoppers, especially the limited number they make (usually) every year that are lined. This year it's the "Branson". Those will definitely keep the wind off. And being Galvin Green, they are definitely cut to be able to play golf in.

My vote goes for the RLX Cool Wool Jacket. Pricey but well worth it. At the moment, I am wearing it with a base layer and a polo shirt but I'm playing golf beside the seaside in Scotland so yeah, it's cold.

When in cold wind- Mizuno Windlite without question. Watch RBG for sales, they can get as low as $20 for the merino sweater with windlite. I will wear this under 45* with just a polo underneath.

Any other windy day above that i will wear a FJ wind shirt. Long sleeve when it get s alittle chilly and the Short sleeve when it is a little warmer.

All with just a tech fabric polo underneath. The FJ windshirts are perfectly packable and dont take up much room in a golf bag if it gets to hot/cold.

I'm not sure entirely what conditions you are asking about, but I used my pro shop credit on one of these short sleeve wind shirts from Callaway and I absolutely love it. I wear it all the time off the course too when it is a kind of chilly day but not too cold. I really love the short sleeves, if I need to bust out a longer sleeve one I am probably going to just stay at home.

It's still hard to beat anything using the Windstopper material. I have several ZR windbreaker/jacket models of varying thicknesses that work well from the lower 50's to the upper 30's when combined with differing base layers. I have a few Mizuno Windlite sweaters that really work well with a Windstopper outer layer. Great for a cloudy windy day in the 30's. Flexible, breathable, and still light enough to not impede the swing.
