New Putter is 20 Grams Heavier and I need Advice

BENNYSUPREME

Recommended Posts

I just got my new putter last week. My original putter was a Machine at 330grams and my new Mann Krafted putter is 352 grams. My question is, Is it normal to leave putts short at first after switching to a heavier putter? I Have spent several hours on the practice greens but can seem to get the speeds down with the new putter. I have a very smooth putting stroke with the 330 gram putter but I'm feeling like I actually have to force the putts with the 352 gram putter right now. Is that a normal feeling at first? The difference between the two putters is about 2 to 3 feet from 20 feet away when I use the same stroke.

Should I stick it out and keep practicing with it? Should I wait until I can get a couple rounds under my belt with the new putter?

Any advice from those whom have made the switch would be appreciative.

Things of Note:

I have gamed the Machine for about 3 or 4 years

I have never game anything over 330 and that's why I wanted to try a 350 gram putter

The machine have a very slight toe hang, the Mann Kraft putter is face balanced

The grips are slightly different. slim 3.0 on the machine and a flatso 3.0 of the Mann Krafted

The Mann Krafted seems to be about a half inch to inch longer, so I chock down.

It's normal to have to adjust. You've been using the same putter for 3+ years. A new one will have a different feel. Will look different. Will roll differently. Etc. Stick it out for a while.

Is the new putter custom made? Did you putt with it prior to buying it? Or just get it because it looked nice?

Custom build to same specs besides the weight. I think I will stick it out and give her a chance. I think it will be great on fast greens even more so then my current gamer.

if the mannkrafted was about 2 inches shorter than the machine it would play to the same swing weight ie feel the same weight when swinging. The fact that it is even longer than the machine means the swing weight difference is magnified, maybe consider shortening the mannkrafted to an inch or half inch shorter than the machine? Could significantly help feel

350g is a head weight that fits 95% of all golfers so I would suggest giving it a bit more time. A putter that is too heavy can cause the transition from back swing to forward swing to become to uncomfortable to coordinate, causing distance control problems.

Also , weight fitting isn't really about the head weight, but more about the putters balance. In other words, what your really after is the best combination of both head weight and shaft butt weight to provide the most rhythmic, consistent and smoothest stroke possible for the golfer. The butt weight is typically an additional 80g.

Hope this helps

Exactly as stated by Manz60

For me heavier headed putters (360 to 365 grams) counter weighted to a

swing weight of E-2/ E-3 at a playing of 34.5" and over all static weight

of 575 grams is perfect.

In Howard Jones " Diy / driver fitting " post, there is segment on how to

fit your self for putter weighting.

Out of curiosity I followed his procedures and arrived

At the exact same weighting I have been doing for years.

Highly recommend reading the Howard Jones tutorial.

It will explain why Manz60 is spot on with his post.

Edit: amount of butt weight needed to balance the putter can vary,

It depends on weight and size of the grip you use.

Thanks for all the advice!

I took it out on the course yesterday and putted okay with it. Started off with a lot of two putts then go her going. It helps that I was playing with the course record holder, shot 65 I think and had 2 boogies. He said pick a more aggressive line and go at it. It worked for getting the ball to the hole.

Today I spent about two hours on the practice green. My speed is coming around the and the 10 to 15 footers are money if I line the ball up right.

I have the same issues using 350+ putters. My current gamer is 330g and building one that is going to be about 340g +/- depending on how much weight I lose refinishing the head. I generally play slower greens so a lighter putter has always worked better for me. Hope the heavier custom build works out for you!

It's all about being able to feel and control the head. Shaft length and the weight, shape, and thickness of the grip have as much impact as head weight.

That's what she said, I went from 330 to 355, feels much better, but takes time to get accustomed to it.
