How has golf affected your life off of the course?

Has golf had any impact on your life when you're not playing? Have you learned to apply your golf improvement skills and methods to any other part of your life? Has it made you more disciplined in learning another sport? Has it had a negative impact on some area of your life and caused some kind of unforeseen problems? Has it improved your health or general happiness? How has golf affected your life off of the course?

Has golf had any impact on your life when you're not playing?

Yes.

Have you learned to apply your golf improvement skills and methods to any other part of your life?

Yes.

Has it made you more disciplined in learning another sport?

No.

Has it had a negative impact on some area of your life and caused some kind of unforeseen problems?

Other than some soreness in the lower back, No.

Has it improved your health or general happiness?

Yes.

How has golf affected your life off of the course?

I think golf has taught me to be more humble, but also more competitive. My whole family plays, so to say it has affected us on many levels would be an understatement.

It’s my therapy. It’s my meditation.

Others find peace with yoga or running or smoking dope or going to museums.

Me and a golf ball. No classes or social status, the ball never cared where I grew up or who my parents were.

I don’t get to blame anyone else out there for a bad shot. It’s just you and a ball.

Outside of a few people and my dogs it’s the most important thing in my life and it keeps me sane.

The course and the game are my places of Zen, no matter how well or bad I am playing, I always think to myself "I could be working or deployed, etc", I've learned patience and to listen, mind you this is coming from an old Drill Sergeant, golf have calmed me down immensely, this translates to the house, I work during the week, I only play on Saturdays and Sundays I volunteer at church, so a huge thank you to the game and those that I have met through this experience!!!!

Nothing negative.

It has very positively effected my general health so far. I was a coach potato and had too much weight on me. We got a puppy and she keeps me off the coach walking and getting fit, but my work at the range has significantly helped with my flexibility and strength and the few rounds I've played this season have upped my Aerobic capacity as well.

I feel better, sleep better and eat better than I have in at least 5 years.

My wife thinks 18 holes a week is too much so I'd say negatively in my relationship to her on days I play. I'd like to play 36 a week but....

Most other things we get along fine .

Golf has been a huge part of my life. It taught me many things from a young age that have carried me through life.

My closest friends are all through golf and many of my greatest memories happened through golf.

I just wish my son was more keen because you would struggle to find a better hobby for a child to do over the summer.

I used to head up first thing and play 54 holes many days on the school holidays and my parents knew where I was.

It saddens me to see over coached young kids now and in general golf is dying here in Scotland because hardly any kids play now compared to my time as a junior.

The local inter club junior summer league is cancelled now due to clubs being unable to gather a team. Many clubs now can't even hold junior medals because no-one plays. In 20 years many clubs will close because there is no-one coming through to replace the natural losses in players.

Yeah. My job drove a wedge between myself and my ex. Long hours 430am to sometimes after 5 usually around 3 though....nearly everyday. And not much pay lol. BUT lol those hours as an intern and assistant have paid off now, and I'm rather enjoying my life right now. As much as it hurt then, I'm currently working at my dream facility with terrific membership and GM. So it caused pain, but brought extreme joy and prosperity! :)

I've started playing more with three buddies of mine on Sunday mornings here recently. Unfortunately we only got the itch to start playing in late August and our season isn't that long here in Northern Indiana. Regardless, it's not that competitive, just four guys knocking the ball around and BS'ing. It's a nice escape from work, parenting, and chores. It's not intrusive or financially imposing so pretty much it's just a great way to hang out with friends and do something we all enjoy as a group. It's also made me want to get better and think my way around the course a little more, despite not being a money game or anything. So the net of it, for me, is positive. I'll hopefully be able to play more next year and also get back to playing really early Saturday rounds with one of my best friends. He and I walk 18, the other group, we ride. Very different experiences but both relaxing while still challenging at the same time.

As others have mentioned, golf is therapy for me. It is both extremely maddening, but is also extremely intoxicating. Also, after several knee surgeries, golf is about the only physical activity I'm really able to do much anymore. And I'll add that golf is probably the one thing that helps me bond with friends and / or form new friendships, etc. Finally, golf is the only endeavor I've ever undertaken in my life that has taken me so long to become relatively proficient at. I am a "natural" when it comes to a whole lot of things, but not golf. I have had to work and work and work to get better.

So it helps ME a lot. However, I do think that has hurt me a bit in my family life and in my career. My wife and kids are generally OK with me going out to play golf, but they'd rather me not do it. I do a pretty good job of managing it, and being mostly present when I am at home, etc. But it is undeniable that the time i take for me to play golf is to some degree time taken from my family (even if it is time that I need). And for work / career, I would just say that golf is on my mind a lot, and when opportunities to play present themselves I try to take advantage. Thus, that at times takes away from my focus on work / career. I've had by essentially any measure a very successful career, and I have a very good marriage, and my kids are doing well, etc....so any "harm" from golf appears to be either minimal or non-existent. But, certainly, if I didn't take a few hours every week to play golf it would likely result in more time at home / work.

Now that I've said that, though, why is it that taking time for golf is considered a bad thing when taking time to run, or train for triathlons, or working out, or for mental / spiritual breaks are considered good things? Is it because golf is mostly a "rich white guy" endeavor (and thus inherently bad)?

Golf has been a constant in my life for over 30 years. The only negative is all the money spent. But, as my wife points out, if I were a bar fly, or hung out at strip clubs, I would probably spend a lot more, with no positive return.

I took up golf for the exercise of it. If I hadn't done that for past 20+ years I'd either be eating a lot less than I do now or I'd weigh 300 pounds. There's no way I'd walk four to five miles several times a week if it weren't for golf.

But it hasn't made me a better person, enriched my inner life, brought me closer to my father, granted me total consciousness or allowed me to exorcise any demons. It's just a game that happens to provide some exercise.

A prime example this morning at the range. Everything out of kilter. No sensation of any positive outcome. Take a deep breath, go back to basics and work on rhythm. Within a few balls all was right with the world.

Same philosophy holds true in all other aspects of life. Cause and effect. If something's out of sync, take a deep breath and focus on the fundamental issue.

Everything has a root cause.

Okay, just kidding.

So many family experiences related to golf since I was little and continuing that a lot of "away from the course" has been affected, influenced, defined by golf.

So many people I've met through golf, including fine folks on here.

Golf has always been central to what I would consider a dream vacation - working on that becoming reality even this evening. And that is family based and will be awesome.

That felt good, now back to dealing with that so and so blathering on about Comeaux,
