Anybody use the Matsuyama pause at the top

I'm not sure I could 'use' a pause like that... It looks so natural and intuitive to him.

Having said that, I used to have a problem with dropping the hands at the top of the backswing, and the ultimate cure was to deliberately introduce a pause. Without the pause I couldn't feel the drop happening. With a pause it became really obvious. I even did that on the course when I was going back to my old ways.

There is a pause that seems like an eternity in my head but imperceptible to the naked eye.

If I don't concentrate on that pause the hips fire EVEN MORE too soon, too fast and the results are even more horrific than when I do introduce the pseudo pause.

No success stories with the Matsuyama pause at the top move?

I've been doing the pause at top, and it seems like that pause let's you keep your balance better and then you also don't feel like you need to rush the downswing.

Downswing trigger is to press aggressively into left foot, this is when the acceleration happens.

Pro had me start doing this as a drill a few years ago to stop my urge to kill the ball. It helps me start the downswing with my lower body instead of throwing my hands at the ball.

It worked it's way into my swing and although it feels like I'm stopping forever, on video it's barely noticeable. I played in a scramble last week and paused for what felt to me like 3-4 seconds before starting my downswing on a drive on a narrow hole. One of my partners said it was the smoothest swing I'd made all day and it was piped down the middle.

I should have done that on all the other drives that disappeared into the woods...

  • 7 months later...

im not so sure there ever is a perfectly stoic pause where no muscles are moving. It looks like a pause but im guessing there are minute, finite movements that are still occurring until he is ready to start the downswing.

That being said, its like furyks swing. You would never want to try to incorporate it unless it happened naturally and worked.

I supposedly used to in my junior golf and college golf days. I never really noticed it. I don't anymore. Don't know what happened to it.

George Gankas recommends it for drills. He calls them 'freezers.' I can see why. If you really want to shallow out the shaft while going close to full speed on the downswing, the freezer drill seems to do the trick and you can start to feel the difference of what is going on between the freezer drill and the normal swing.

I started doing this a few years ago and, Luke others have said, really helps me keep from trying to kill the ball and keeps my hips under control. Doubt anyone watching would notice, but it sure feels like a long pause.

THIS!

For me it's about giving myself that split second to get my path from the outside to the inside so I can hit that draw!

For me it's an eternity, but in reality it's probably not even noticeable.

He shouldn’t even do it. Wrecks his rhythm and sequence at times.

When only one tour player does it, it’s very unlikely a good thing for anyone.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Same here. I still pause on days my swing is grooved. Pretty noticeable. I’ve never felt it though. I think it evolves naturally while searching for rhythm

I definitely have a slight pause at the top, no where even close to what Matsuyama does. I don’t know how it started, when it started or why I do it, but anytime I try and not do it, it doesn’t bode well.

Adam Scott does it - not as long as Hideki but if you watch his swing he pauses.

They say Scott has a nice swing...

I would do unspeakable things for Scott’s swing. His putting stroke though.....no deal.

He has been slowly working on getting rid of it too!

Apples and oranges. Scott does it the same every time and in rhythm. Matsuyama not so much. It’s why he has all of those demonstrative finishes on good shots he’s become notorious for. He’s not reacting negatively to the shot, but how awful the change of direction felt when he had a coffee break in transition.

Matsuyama has a great swing. His rhythm sucks.

Scott’s rhythm is great.

Calling those two “pauses” the same thing is like saying 45* and 30 below zero are both cold days.

So... Monte perhaps a better question - “Anybody use the Scott pause at the top?” - is the Scott pause an integral part of his great swing and would it help any of us?..
