Your bag setup when you shot your best round

Recommended Posts

I'm sure some version of this has been done before, but let's do it again.

It's 26 degrees at the mountaintop casa thinking fondly of rounds past while dreaming up some new jan craig colorways for my 2018 bag swaggy.

Post ur bag setup and the track. Perhaps refrain from posting score since one persons even is anothers sub 90 is anothers beating their dad is anothers 69. But post it if you like! :)

Lol wow. That would of been 16 years ago when I shot level par on my home course.

I grew up in the game improverished so I was playing used or knock off equipment; humble beginnings.

1. Knock Callaway driver with a Harrison graphite shaft

3. Knock off adams strong 3 wood with the rifle shaft. Lol I still have that club.

2. Pro gear 2 iron

3-PW top flight Magna irons

56* pro gear sander wedge

Accutech putter which I still have and that comes off way too hot and feels so tingly compared to my ping redwood lol

+8 at a Country club here in NSW, Australia a few weeks ago with the back up clubs holidaying with the missus. Good for me, as I am 58, have had cancer twice and was told I would not use my left arm again ha ha.

Ping G25 Driver - stiff

Taylor Made V-Steel 3 and 5 Fairways - stiff

Original Taylormade Steel Rescue 2 - 16 degrees - regular

TM Rocketcbladez 4 - sand wedge wedge -stiff.

Old Cleveland Lob wedge

2008 Scotty Cameron Buttonback.

Probably shot lower a few times when I was younger, but if I can't remember, it doesn't count. I think teaching the wife as we went helped, as I was not thinking about my own game. :-)

I've tied my low a couple times. Did it twice this past summer at 2 different courses, one at a 9 hole (3002 yards per 9), and once at a more championship course (Blue Tees - 6600 yards). Both times shot 67 (-5).

This last year, I accomplished something I've never done before - keeping the same equipment in the bag THE WHOLE YEAR! And as you'll see, I am brand biased. This winter I may do some swapping (New F8+'s possibly and wedges).

Driver - Cobra King F6+ (Blue) set at 10.5* with a standard stock stiff shaft

3 Wood - Cobra King F6 (Blue) set at 15*, also a stock stiff shaft

Hybrids - Cobra Bio Cell 19* & 22* (Blue) - I swap out these with the 3 & 4 iron pending playing conditions

Irons - Cobra King Pro Forged MB/CB 3-PW

Wedges - Cobra Tour Trusty 54* & 58*

Putter - Scotty Cameron X5 Dual Balance (IN LOVE with this thing!)

Taylormade Coin Forged Rac MB 3-pw with DG s300 Sensicore

I still have the irons sitting in a bag in my office and still use the putter today.

27 years ago this past July. I shot 66 on a par 71 course. I am being honest. I had a drinking problem for most of the 1980s. I was a binge drinker. I did this after I had drank a pint of gin, and Mt Dew. i know its not a figure of my imagination as I played with some people. I did entirely quit drinking not long after. I wanted to get married and realized it wouldnt work unless i did.

Since 1986, I had played with Ben Hogan PC 1 iron, 3 thru EW, and a Becu Hogan special sandwedge. I had bent and grinded myself an Old Titleist Sand Wedge. I had the club pro bend it so that i hit it the exact distance between the EW and the BeCu sandwedge. It was 52 or 53 degrees. I took the Titleist wedge and ground it on my Dads grinder. He has worked on guns forever and a day. Lol I had to buy him a new wheel. I ground the edge off of the one in his workshop. I called this my IN BETWEEN CLUB. little did I know they would be called a gap wedge many years later. I just needed to fill the spot in my bag. I had all of the irons bent 1 degree upright, and 1 degree strong. That meant the EW was 49 degrees.

My woods were Taylor Made Burner 7.5 degrees, with DGX100 shafts and it was 43.5 in long. I had a tour spoon for my 3 wood. It was 42 in long. They had the grey TaylorMade headcover if anyone remembers them. I had a Hogan Carry bag that was blue and white. And used a standard Ping Zing putter on that day. I switched back and forth between, the Zing and an 880s made by Wilson.

I have shot a bunch of 69s several 68s, less than ten 67s, but never again any lower. It is still one heck of a game. I havent played since May of 2016. I have had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee and on Dec 11th supposed to get my right knee replaced. Cant wait to get back to playing.

It was an odd collection... I was in high school, playing a jerry-rigged game with a jerry-rigged bag, which of course was when I shot my best rounds. It looked something like this:

Bertha Steelhead driver, reg flex steel shaft, 11 deg

Unknown bargain-bin 3w (possibly from Knight), reg flex graphite shaft

Knight 5w, very soft reg flex graphite shaft

King Cobra II 3-PW

Ancient left-handed 6 iron for punching out of trees

Cobra Trusty Rusty SW (almost never used except for occasional flop shots)

Bullseye putter

crazily enough it was the FIRST day I had my s55's. I think this was 3 or 4 years ago

68 on my home course, rated 74.2, 144. I had shot 69 a whack of times over 35 years of golf but never lower

It was a crazy good round. Even had a bogey on a par 5 mixed in

I did hit it to a foot 3 holes in a row on 9 and 10 and 11.

I actually did a blow by blow thread on it here

Interesting idea for a topic.

My low gross score has been done twice, and a third time if I look at the number with respect to par. First time was on a par 73 course in 2003, the last two have been on a par 71 course, first in 2008, the last time in 2012. I don't remember what I would have been using in 2003, I was constantly rotating the bag back then (even switched out the bag at the turn one day).

So we'll go with the 2012 round :)

driver: SMT Encore 9°, AJ Tech ZTour90 X, 44.125"

3wood: Orlimar Trimetal Plus 14°, DG-SL X100

2-PW: Ram TG-898, Precision 6.5

GW: Scratch 8620 DD 53°, DGX100

LW: Maltby M Series 58°, DGS

Putter: Snake Eyes Viper Tour Sv1, 34"

Sadly, my round could have been anywhere from 3 to 6 shots better, possibly even better than that, which would have made it ridiculous compared to my level of ability (I was in the middle of dropping from 7 index to a 5 by the end of that season). I hit my irons absurdly well that day, doing almost exactly what I wanted. But I missed a half dozen putts inside 6 feet. After I holed out on 18, I started talking about "what could have been," and my friends all laughed at me. As they should have, LOL.

The irony of the round... I'd just spent 12 months playing Ping Eye2+. Been a blade player since 2001, was having trouble in the wind and found I could get 1000rpm less spin with the Pings on a 6 iron. Decided to commit to the Pings for a year. Wind play improved, but the rest of it was largely the same. After the year was up, I took out a set of blades on a lark, a friend offhandedly commented he thought I hit them better and should maybe play them, instead.

Put the Rams in the bag and tied my personal best. Go figure. Even better, this round was from the blue tees, the earlier personal best was from the white tees....

Short story made long.... LOL at me

It has been a long time since my best round. I know for a fact it was with Cally X14 Pros with Rifle 5.5 shafts in them. Putter was a Callaway Caliente Bolero mallet that is still in my home office that I roll putts with regularly. I think the driver was a 975 JVS with Graffaloy PL Blue but it might have been a TM 320 with the Graffaloy Blue. 3 wood was the TM PT 15 with S300 steel and wedges were Vokeys a 252.08 and 456.14.

Best round wasn't best score. Erin Hills in 2015. Didn't have great ball striking that day but had a hot putter, multiple sand saves and avoided trouble for the most part. Much to the disappointment of the imaginary galleries, lipped out a birdie putt on the nearly-600-yard par 5 18th. Great property, great weather, fun round w/ my buddy and the random twosome we got paired with. Definitely groundhog day material.

64(-6) at my home course that plays very hilly with blind shots and about 6,100 yards. 66(-6) at 7,150 yard links layout. Both with same clubs and the same week. Oh what I’d pay to have that zone I was in back.....

I will play...

Driver= Cobra Fly-Z+

3W & 5W= Titleist 915F

Irons= Ping S55 (4-PW)

Wedges= Ping Glide (50, 54, 58)

Putter= Nike Method 001

Ball= Nike RZN Black Volt

Everything seemed to be "on" that day- especially my ball striking and short game. If I missed a shot, I was lucky to miss it in the right places were I was never in too much trouble. That round in particular was magic with the putter as I did not have a 3 putt the entire round (I putted everything out that day too). I remember having an abnormal amount of 1 putts that either saved par, bogey, or were for birdie. That definitely gave me confidence as the round went on and I was swinging "free" that day. The only thought I had was aim for a target and hit that target. Nothing fancy but it worked.

Driver: PING G410 LST, Ping Tour 65X

3 Wood: PING G400, Project x EvenFlow Blue 75 6.5

3 Hybrid: PING G410, Ping Tour 85 X

Irons: Mizuno MP-5 (4-PW), Dynamic Gold X100

Wedges: PING Glide (50SS, 54WS, 58ES), Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5

Ball: Taylormade TP5 (Pix or Yellow)
