Starting the backswing with right shoulder changed my game

Thanks to this obscure video I saw on youtube - I finally fixed my swing after 8 years of toppiing, shanking, pulls, weak fades, OTT you name it. What was happening with my old swing was that I was following the general advice given to start with my arms etc The problem was although I did turn my shoulder I was turning it the wrong way leading me to have a flat shoulder turn early extension on the backswiing all because I was too focused on taking tghe club the right way with my arms.

Now just focusing on my right shoulder turning and also my right arm folding asap was a game changer. Everything just fits into place now.

Wheres the video? Im all for watching an obscure, game changing video.

But your right. When I find myself becoming too focused on the ball and not turning properly, I can fix it by making sure I turn my trail shoulder back, as opposed to turning my lead shoulder back. I feel much more free in the shoulders and hips and it also allows my head to move just a tad with my turn and not be so dang focused on keeping my head down.

There was an iTeach student on here recently that posted a video and his swing thought was to get his left shoulder over his right heel(he was lefty, like me). Its a legit move.

Good links. It's confirming some recent changes to my backswing are proper, not just temporary feel fixed. I've never seen any instruction from either of those guys but I appreciate their minimal approach - no jargon and keeping everything under a few minutes. Can't underappreciate a fundamental like this, even if you already do it pretty well.

Thx for sharing Sonny. What's your downswing thought?

Yes, thanks, Sonny. I suffer from the same swing issues that you have on my longer clubs. I can see and feel the difference like the third video describes. Can't wait to hit the range with this little nugget! I can feel the difference in the swing and the turn after just a few full swings in the kitchen.

Good thread. I have always struggled with a lack of turn on my quick backswing. Feeling that the left shoulder has to go too far to get it right, I initially started using the Greg Norman tip of RPB (right pocket back) with good results but I now want to see if this is just as effective or better for me.

This seems like it would be a helpful thought for me. Won't be able to try it out for another couple of months, though...

Just tinkering with the idea inside (no full swing/no ball), it seems like this thought could cause you to drag the club inside some as an early part of the backswing. For those who have used this thought, did you find that you wanted to take the club too inside to start with? And if so, how did you correct it?

Man, this is one of those thoughts that I always seem to forget for weeks/months/years and then when something brings it back (thanks, OP) it makes a noticeable difference. I struggled with an inside takeaway when I first tried doing it and fought that for a while until utilizing the "wide, narrow, wide" approach and that seemed to get everything back in some order.

This was the first lesson topic I ever had with Geoff Jones. Trail shoulder and trail hip takes the club back.

It makes total sense.

If your goal is to use the lead side to pull the arms into the downswing, the opposite motion is used to “wind the spring up”.

It feels awful at first. It truly does. If you’re used to pushing the club to the top with the left side, the opposite will feel VERY out of control to start with.

However, you’re going to have to do the move in a mirror and learn to trust it. It will sync the arms to the turn so much better.

A great way to drill this is set up with a weight behind the club head. Learn to slide the weight with your right shoulder going back. No snatching the club with your hands. Trust the shoulder turn.

Someone with time for over a thousand posts objects to the suggestion they would benefit from listening to Chuck Cook explain the golf swing and how trail shoulder works.

That is pretty much a disincentive to taking the time to post or reply

Thx...That’s a great video. Pretty amazing to be able to watch this kind of thing... like getting an invite to the conference itself.
