Maui Jim v. Oakley

e-man

Recommended Posts

As much as I love maui Jim’s, id say the golf prism lens is better for Golf than anything maui makes.

Maui makes a “High transmission” lens that is has a greenish tint that they will tell you is good for Golf but I don’t care for it.

I like their bronze lens for daily use and driving but not great for Golf either.

The other factor is that ALL Maui’s are polarized. Polarization is great for cutting glare but it tends to “flatten out” your perspective and makes green reading harder.

Oakley Golf Prism lenses are deliberately NOT polarized for this reason.

I have a pair of the Prism flak jacket 2.0 XL and they are very good for golf. They are not very dark and can be used even when it’s quite overcast. I do hate the straight arms on them, but that’s just an Oakley thing.

Well, I currently have gray polarized RX in flak 2.0 and the polarization does not bother me on the course. My concern with the prism golf is that they will be too bright. I just need something a little brighter than the gray polarized with some contrast so that I can use them on the golf course in lower light conditions.

Hey guys. I currently own a pair of Oakley flak 2.0 with grey polarized prescription lenses. They are a little too dark for my early morning rounds. I am thinking of going with either a set of prescription prism golf or moving over to Maui Jim. What would be a comparable lens in Maui Jim?

GTgolf should be along shortly. :D

Well...I can’t imagine Polarization would “bother” anyone. It’s quite relaxing to the eye. I love polarized lenses,....just not to Golf.

It actually isn’t my personal opinion that polarization hurts green reading ability. Oakley has done studies on it. You WILL read greens better with non polarized lenses.

As far as tint level goes. Yes, the Prism lenses are really not very dark. They brighten up certain colors purposely to enhance depth perception and green reading. If you want them to be like “regular” sun glasses i think you will be disappointed. I would never wear them for anything other than Golf or sport shooting.

Does polarization hurt with respect to all aspects of reading greens or just with respect to grain?

The glare is removed by the polarization, but as you bring up, sheen on the grass, or glare, is what let’s you see the grain. If your greens have little or no grain I suppose this isn’t a real big deal.

However, I also believe that the same idea applies to slope in general. If you remove all of the glare, it makes it harder to identify subtle contours and slopes as well.

The one last thing you can’t tell until you actually get out on the greens, is that the Prism lenses highlight different TYPES of grass and also how damp or dry different sections of the green are. It’s a bit weird. You need a little time with them to figure out how to use this new info. You can’t see these things without the lenses.

I can tell you from experience after wearing and loving Maui Jim for 20 years, the Prism lenses are unequivocally better for Golf. I just wouldn’t wear them all the time. Id call them “activity specific”I guess.

I have prizm golf and they are like a high color contrast version of the G30 lenses

I really enjoy all my Flak 2.0 lenses.

I have them in prescription, and they are great.

I have Sapphire Iridium, VR28 Black Iridium, Prizm Golf, 24K Gold, Clear to Dark Grey Transitions, Persimmon (Hunters Orange).

24K is great for super bright sun at noon. Sapphire Blue is great for partly sunny days, VR 28 for partly cloudy, Prizm for overcast days, Transitions are great anytime, but particularly around dawn or dusk. Persimmon is very specific lens for dark overcast conditions, great for brightening up a stormy day look. Nothing beats being on a golf course after a light storm. Low wind, damp course, cooled temperatures. Love it.

Prizm Golf is fine for lower light, but please sample these at the store first. They have high intensity contrast to them that some people have found to be a little much.

You should never wear polarized lenses on the golf course. If you like them and you dont feel like they inhibit your ability to have depth perception and read greens...then keep them.

I have transition BROWN lenses in my glasses and love them. I used to have grey transitions but now that I have used the brown, I will never go back to grey. For me the brown provides much better contrast than the grey. Mine are prescription too. So at dawn and dusk they lighten us significantly providing more light transmission.

Maui Jim are superior to Oakley in every way as far as optics go. I’ve owned probably 10 pairs of oakleys, and since I bought my first pair of Mauis, I’ll never buy oakleys again. There is no comparison.

No glasses are going to help with your golf game. If the lenses are too dark, a lighter lense is all you need. If you like the oakleys fit and style, just get different lenses. If you want better glasses, get the Mauis in a lighter color lense.

Thanks big red. My wife and kids have Maui Jim and they love them. I've looked through them, but they are not prescription so it's hard to compare. My only issue with them is that for golf, I just don't love the frame options. For off the course, I would wear them in a heartbeat.

As for Oakley and the quality, I can only say that I've been very happy with my flak 2.0 gray polarized. They fit great and the lenses seem to be very clear to me. Maybe it's the difference better RX and non RX lenses.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Appreciate the above discussion - in my experience, Maui Jim for driving and daily use. Oakley for golf.

So for just wearing around, you prefer MJ to Oakley? I am just looking for new sunglasses don't like them for golf

Maybe, maybe Ill buy them when they offer customization and give Military and First Responder discounts.

MJ's rose colored lenses are probably their lightest option. FWIW, Smith makes some Chromapop lenses in a rose color that I find are great for golf. Also like the Oakley Prism however...

Just read more of this post - definitely suggest the Smith Chromapop in rose if you want something darker than the Prism.... The model I have is called "Dover"... The lens color is "Polarchromic Ignitor"
