Do you line up your putts with a line on the ball?

I was watching Mark Crossfield and Matthew Lockey and they both don't use a line on their golf balls. Both are very good putters to be honest.

They made fun of their friend Dan for using a line.

*No need for any Crossfield hate please*

Are there any pros who don't use a line? Spieth and Tiger use a line on their golf ball.

I don't use a line, but I'm sure it would help if I did. Sheer laziness.

It helps external reference points, planning, reading, etc.. But ... takes effort.

I know what you mean.

Sometime when I line it up and stand over the ball, it doesn't look right

I think the line isn't right too often. Standing over the ball is a far different perspective from lining up the putt from behind the ball. I tried the line on the ball thing for a while and found myself facing too many difficulties. I finally settled on simply identifying my putting point drawing a line thereto through the ball with my eye and shooting for it. It's a lot easier for me.

I line up the ball name, i.e Titleist, Srixon, etc. It gives me good idea of my intended line without locking me in, possibly doubting my line when I set up over it. It works out well for me, but I salso don't have any color lines on my putter, just a center dot. I think it's just personal preference.

I did use a line for quite a few years but felt that I was starting to get too technical with my putting. I went no line last year and it helped to get the feel back into my putts. Probably had my best year in a long time.

I've never used a line on the ball. In my mind, its really difficult to get the line dead on top of the ball, with my eyes dead over the ball, and the line dead on line to my target. I prefer to envision the start line as a much longer image, line my putter perpendicular to it, and swing along my image of the target line. Of course my putter moves on something of an arc, but that image still works pretty well for me.

Another vote for tried it and putt better without using the line. Proper distance is much more elusive than line and the all that focus on the line on the ball took away from thinking about distance.

On longer putts, I don't like to overthink my line of putt. From behind, I work out a general direction then replace the ball with my Sharpie line on the ball pointing there. Now, as I stand over the ball, all brain cells get to work on speed. :golfer:

This practice always intrigues me. The device allows you to draw a straight line, granted. It’s a great idea to align your putter in relation to that line, granted. But if you stand behind your partner while he aligns to ball with the line relative to his desired target, it is often pointed no where near it.

I've always used the line on the ball but then I decided I was going to play some speed golf in a cart one day because the course was completely empty and i wanted to see how fast i could play 9 holes. And on that day i was putting so well, had 2 one putts i think and no three putts so I think I am going to try next season without using the line on the ball and see how I do!

I use it... sometimes. About 85% of the time I just use the dot on the ball (line on one side, dot on the other).

Long putts that have a break or two in them the line helps me stay on the intended line and then focus on speed. On most putts I will only use it if I KNOW the exact amount of break and can depend on it. It's a bigger break and it really depends on how much speed it applied, it becomes a feel putt and can't use the line. I just use the dot(s) that are on the other side of the ball.

I'm a very, very mechanical putter. I use the line exclusively pretty much for everything outside a foot.

Typically i read the putt and then put the line of the ball on the exact line i want to hit the putt, then i align that with my putter alignment aid and go. I think i have an eye dominance thing because whenever i aim myself i always aim too far right

I used the line for a couple years but then decided to quit for a couple reasons.

It takes additional time to line it up. Also, its just one more variable that I don't want to deal with. You already have the line and speed of the putt to worry about, making sure the line on the ball is lined up correctly just adds to the challenge of putting. I place the ball on the green with white space facing up and use the putter sight lines as a guide.

the alignment aid is already there for my convenience, so I putt it to use. My question is do golf balls go outta round ?

I'm sure it can happen. I would think it would be rare though. I really don't have a ball long enough to find out. I would be more concerned with one that has been abraded (path or sharp grooves) becoming unpredictable in flight. After seeing that Titleist video where such a slight difference in dimple depth affecting flight, I might take balls out of play a little more often.
