George Nicoll NoShok Hosel

Many will have come across the NoShok hosel in articles on hickory/ steel shafted golf but may not have actually seen one. It was developed by George Nicoll, clubmakers in Scotland to overcome the need to have two separate hosels during the transition years between hickory and steel shafts. Steel shafts were not legalised outside of USGA jurisdiction until 1929, so an exporting business like Nicolls either had to double up on stock or devise an ingenious solution not only for the intervening 6 year period, but also the period afterwards when steel was preferred for woods and hickory for iron. I believe it was to do with the harsh feel of steel in iron heads.

The adapter was made of hard rubber and one is struck by how light it's construction was. It feels very modern

Good spot. Yes, that seems to be a particularly long one. Don't know why, could be an early version, but I have maybe half a dozen others (now with hickory shafts in them) and they are shorter by between 1/2 and 3/4 inch.

It looks a lot like vulcanized fiber (the original "plastic"), only one way to tell......

Whatever it is, it's very tough.

Could try to ignite it using shavings from the pyratone, stand back for another New Years day firework display! Pyratone, I think is cellulose based and pretty sparky stuff.

I was thinking of taking the back edge of a knife and scraping it. Fiber would not do much of anything, rubber

should start to peel off.....

Any info on what these actually are and how old they might be etc would be much appreciated.

I live quite near Leven in Scotland which makes it all the more interesting.

They're very similar to the one in the first post so will be the same sort of date, mid 1920s to mid 1930s.

Coated steel shaft with the Noshok hosel fitting, nice examples.
