Happy new year. Played w/ jjr - down for holilday sun :) - out at Legend Trail. Course was in pretty good shape: fairways were good, greens rolled nice but were much slower than they looked, bunkers were lacking sand. They do have one fairway that looks to have had trouble recovering and are trying to get it to 'retake' the grass, but not a huge issue.

One of the Par 5s on back nine has the turf issue played LT Xmas Eve greens were rolling quick that day

Toka sticks yesterday, probably the best shape I've seen it.

Bummed I couldn't make it, legs were not as bad as I was expecting after the 14 mile hike Sunday too dangit.

Anyone playing this coming anywhere reasonable $ wise Saturday? I need to get back out.

Sounds like you’ve been hiking more than golfing lately! I’m probably going to walk this weekend with my friend Kevin that you met at We ko pa. Dobson ranch and/or gcu. 1st available twilight. Dm me on Twitter if you’re interested.

Las Sendas this morning in very good shape. The rangers doing their work kept everybody moving and we finished in 3:45. Very enjoyable round

Today, TPC Champions in great shape. I love that course and if I was living here would play there a lot. Fairways are perfect, like a carpet. Same with greens. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to walk with your bag to practice area (no carting) and the chipping area is separated from the general practice. Lots of Web.com practicing today.

Gcu today

Pace-a bit slow. 4h 20m, but we walked so less stop & go. 3 ball. Waited about 15 mins on every par 3

Overall conditions-overwatered

Greens-fair, slow, wet, not very consistent. 7? Disappointing Papago’s Greens are so much better

Bunkers & Tees-good

Fairways-wet, not much roll

Layout-good, some of the bunkers are dumb

Routing-very good, easy walk

Some interesting short par 4s & 18 is a fun short par 5. Overall a good course on a rather boring piece of land

Value-excellent. $25 to walk, weekend afternoon, city card

Customer service below avg but it’s an inexpensive muni so I had lower expectations

My muni rankings:

Papago

Gcu

Aguila

Haven’t played encanto or cave creek

Dobson tomorrow

Dobson ranch today

Pace-very slow & we were a walking 4 ball

Layout-very boring. 8th hole was the most interesting . At least it was an easy walk

Greens-best part, a bit slow but undulating

Rough-never got the hang of hitting out of hard dormant Bermuda

Bunkers-very shallow, not penal, pretty good sand

Tees & fairways-good

Would defintely put gcu, Papago & Aguila over DR

How is Papago playing condition and pace?

Greens are almost always great. Play early for better pace.

DID you play twilight at Dobson? Rule of thumb: if you’re not one of the first 5 out, then it’s a long day.

Gonna chime in from a different point of view on Dobson. The par 3’s are a good mix, the more you play it the more lines off the tee open up if you choose to be agressive. Playing a Cut off of 2 shaves yardage, draw the corner on 5, fly the bunker on 6, hard cut on 8 sets you up perfect. Cut the corner on 13, 15 is a real solid one with lots of options, 16 gives you options and angles. 17 is a tough par 3 followed by a par 5 to close. I think it’s a really fun course to play, a course doesn’t have to be a great one to be a fun one :)

I’d put Aguila over Dobson for sure though, probably papago too, I just don’t think it’s fair to call it boring haha

Just play in the Friday money games. Put a few hundred (or thousand) on the line and it won't be boring.

Sometimes a golf course is just a golf course if that makes sense. Not everything is going to be an architectural gem. Nothing wrong with that.

Played Aguila yesterday "late" at around 11:30am. Pace was fantastic for time of day/year at around 4 hours. I can only assume they're losing some play due to the bunker situation...or maybe it's too hot? Quite a few 2 and 3-some's out there. It's in pretty decent shape but we need some rain and it is starting to show. Greens looked a little thin but rolled well. That said, I'm hoping I got my worst round of 2018 out of the way early. Haven't hit the ball that poorly in years.
