Ping Retro Spec - Anyone have info on it?

Anyone seen or heard any details about the Ping retro spec? Rick Shiels mentioned it on a video and I have seen it on Pings patents but nothing other than that.

Retro lofts. Too funny. Retro is not a 22* "4" iron. Retro is not a 46* "pitching wedge". Whatever sells clubs I guess.

The PW is one degree stronger than your 716 MBs and 2 degrees at the 4 and 5.

True it's not retro but I don't see many (any?) companies making a set with a 51 degree PW.

Ping is almost the last to the party with flex face stronger lofted clubs.

Every time someone complains about lofts, I picture a cranky old fart wearing chinos.

They need adjustable sole stamps on irons. It could kind of be like changing the little tag on your head cover. Retro PW? sure just put that stamp on the "GW" Now ya got a retro 50* PW. See how that works?

I don't understand the need for different lofts like this?

I mean all they are really saying is "we can adjust the lofts on your irons 2 degrees" they have been doing it for years...now they just got the marketing department involved.

I think the power specs could work. You could go 6-SW. the SW would turn into a gap wedge then u could add a 56 and 60 and be set.

So the set would have 5 wedges, Pw, Gw, Sw, Sw2, Lw and only 4 Irons lol. Why do we still call them iron sets at this point? They’re basically wedge sets :)

Those Retro lofts are very near what I like and play. They are also very near those from the Eye2 and Mizuno MP14, only one club off.

Same for me, both my sets have a 47* Pw. I’d love a set with a 50* Pw so I could eliminate the 52*, but that’ll never happen.

You're right. It's dumb for Ping to try to do things to help golfers out. Let's only stick with the companies that are into the least customization as possible, so their money grab is optimized. Fools.

The way I understand it is lofts got cranked as a result of weight being pulled away to increase forgiveness. They had to increase the lofts to keep the ball in a given launch window.

So really don’t understand why one would want to increase loft unless you are an extremely low ball hitter.

Tom Wishon would disagree with your understanding. Post 1159 is just one of the lasterst of his many comments on this issue over the years. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/581411-does-anyone-still-game-ping-eye-2s/page__st__1140__p__16385124#entry16385124

I reached out to Rick Shiels and Ping on Twitter. Rick stated that he was misinformed about the retro spec. Ping "liked" his reply so i guess that means it'sn ot something that is actually going to happen this year. #Bummer

Ping will still bend your lofts. They may not call it retro spec, but if you want your clubs 2 degrees weak they will.

Weakening Lofts 2 degrees results in increased Bounce by 2 degrees. Some people may not want that.

On the other hand a factory produced Retro Loft iron would not affect the stated Bounce angle.

I don't know. I usually believe what Wishon says most of the time (such as his shaft post and his consistency posts), but the loft thing and the driver adapter thing being useless don't gel with me at all. I know who he is, I know what he's done, and I respect the guy a lot, but I think he's dead wrong on these two things. I've seen it with my own eyes in fittings, taking the exact same golf club, bending it weaker or stronger, and seeing the launch and spin get affected but total carry distance moves like MAYBE 2-3 yards tops. The one exception to this is slower swingers. I've had more success selling "weaker" lofted clubs to slower swingers (like i200) than I do comparably sized, stronger lofted clubs (like Steelhead Pro or Apex or Mizuno 900 Forged). There's merit to it. I did a mock fit to one of the older guys I work with that was jonesing for a new set and he was all hot on some distance-lofted iron, and I threw together an Apex Pro with his shaft of choice and he gained almost a full club in carry despite having a higher launch and spin, which are typically detriments to carry. As for the adapter thing, I'm not going to derail the thread with that.

To the point of the thread, do you think it's possible Shiels just put up what "retro" lofts were so people can see what the difference is? As for all of the distance elitists here, I can't wait to get a set of G700s in Power Spec and hit my 21* 5 iron...woohoo!
