Sun Mountain 2.5+ and 3.5LS

MTM

Recommended Posts

I have a cart bag and 3 carry bags that I use with my ClicGear push cart but I want a bag solely for carrying.

I had kind of decided on the Sun Mountain 2.5+ but I looked at the 3.5LS today and, my goodness, that bag is light too!

I've seen the 2.5+ listed at 2.8 pounds. Is the .7 lbs worth the additional features found in the 3.5?

I'd go 2.5+ and wouldn't think twice

Same...

The 2.5+ is noticeably lighter, straps and padding are back along with a separate bottle pocket, and the apparel pocket doesn't get stuck behind a leg like the 3.5.

I will be the contrarian and say 3.5LS every time! The 3.5 LS is light enough and much more robust than the 2.5 in my humble opinion. It also has plenty of storage and i really don’t feel like I am compromising in any way by using it. To be honest I do not understand why anyone would buy an equivalent sized Ping or Titleist bag as they are quite a bit heavier for no increase in storage or utility.

^Since OP indicated solely for walking I think it's a no brainer. The apparel pocket getting stuck in the legs every time drove me crazy when I had a 3.5LS. Drove me to get rid of it right away.

Just got my 3.5LS and I am going to learn to live with that vs. Hoofer club tangle, and it is so much lighter than the Hoofer.

We'll see how it goes...

If you are talking the 2.5, I see your point. But the 2.5+ is a different animal - much improved over the original 2.5 since it has a ball pocket and water bottle pocket and more substantial material as well as better straps and padding. I own both - will give the 2.5 to my son. The 2.5+ is that much better. If you want a light walker only bag, the 2.5+. I even use it on carts when traveling because I want that travel bag as light as possible. But if you want a more substantial bag, I can see the 3.5. I don't like the leg sticking in the apparel pocket with the 3.5LS, and there is an obvious weight difference.

Will someone provide a few more details about this issue? Does it happen all the time? Just when it’s really full? Any other insight? I’ve been considering the 2018 3.5LS but these comments about the apparel pocket getting stuck in the legs are concerning. Thanks so much.

^ It happened just about every time I picked up bag. Only thing in that pocket for me was the rain hood. It doesn't really affect anything, just annoyed me.

Thanks!

I have used the 2.5 for a couple years and love it. I did put in a call to Sun Mountain and they sent me a set of 3.5 straps which I like much much better than the ones that come on the the 2.5. Now I have a 2.75? I carry 90% of my rounds with comfort and plenty of storage.

  • 4 weeks later...

How well does the SM 2.5+ do, if anyone has, when used on a cart while riding? I walk some and when playing with the ole retired group I ride. Thanks in advance.

It does not have a leg lock mechanism, so it can be clumsy - but I've used a 2.5+ in a cart, and it's fine. I take the 2.5+ when traveling. At home, when riding, I use the other bag - an old 3.5 which is 4.5 lbs. and is more durable for push or mobile cart.

How are people getting 3.5 straps for their 2.5+, have just got this bag and the straps are one area that could be a bit better. How much does it cost to upgrade these, have had a look online but I did not find anything.

Bag is super light though and holds a full set of clubs no problems at all, is what I have been looking for.

I've got a 3.5LS and love it. I've never noticed an issue with my apparel pocket and the legs. Sometimes my towel gets caught up in the legs on pickup but that's it, and that happens with every bag. I have not tried the 2.5+ - my biggest issue with carry bags is always club tangle because I use midsize grips. I have no problems there with the 3.5 and I'd want to be sure the 2.5+ was tangle free before I dropped $200+.

2.5+ is same setup as 3.5LS - same diameter and setup - 9 inch, 4 way

I was wondering the same thing. Do you contact Sun Mountain and request a 3.5 straps? Was proof of purchase required?

This is true, I was trying to decide between the two. I liked a color combo on the 2.5+ the best so compared 3.5ls and the 2.5+ in person. It’s that exact same structure just bigger pockets and more pockets sewed onto the 3.5ls structure

They sell the straps separately. May need to order through an authorized retailer though. They have videos posted on how to replace straps.

I just got my 2.5+ and its a nice lightweight bag, however for my use I might have to send it back. Material doesn't seem like it's going to last very long and if I put anything in the apparel pocket that stretches it somewhat the zipper wont latch together. It will just zip up and not latch together, I think its a protection mechanism because the material is thinner and to prevent over stretching. With how small the apparel pocket is you almost have to stretch it so it will be going back.

  • 1 year later...

Resurrecting this old thread- I'm getting a new carry bag due to some different push cart policies at my new club, and I'm coming from a 4.5LS. Basically I'm down to the 2.5+ vs 3.5LS, barring rave reviews on the new Titleist Players Carbon.

Does anyone have a 2019 or 2020 3.5LS? The apparel pocket/leg issue was mentioned frequently a couple years ago and I couldn't find any information on whether that had been addressed.
