Performance Benefits from V-Sole Technology?

The Sheepdog

Recommended Posts

Cleveland/Srixon, Ben Hogan, and perhaps other OEM's are offering V-Sole technology in their irons and wedges. From what I've read on these boards, many of you are playing Srixon irons. I wanted to hear if any of you guys feel you've benefited from this type of sole design? Or perhaps it's been the opposite? Seems like the type of tech that is best tested in actual playing conditions, and not off a mat.

Cheers

Better contact thru the ball? Are you more of a sweeper or digger?

I have new XXIO forged irons. Very accurate and good length for me. I’m a sweeper—old guy, hacker 13-14 hi, and the v-sole seems to help me hit the ball solidly. Fewer fat shots. I can’t speak with any sophistication about why the v-sole has helped me, but it has made a difference in improving the quality of my shots.

Ya I've found it cleans up touchy contact and leads to very consistent contact, and thus distance. I tend to be a bit more on the digger side of things, but can change gears and sweep as well. I've found it works great in all situations. Knowing that I have some insurance on those slight fat shots helps with confidence as well. The 545's are honestly the perfect irons for me. Sole, shape, offset etc. The only thing I don't love is the slight increase in offset in the long irons, and that the U45 soles have no V-sole whatsoever, and I'm not sure why.

Sweeper/picker here. Fat shots are virtually nonexistent with my combo 745/945 set. I don't think I can go back to traditional soles.

With the Hogan's, I've hit shots with my 5 irons that were behind the ball, but it just kind of glides on the turf into the ball. Instead of digging up turf, it more or less deflects. With the short irons, though, it's tough to find anything to stop a legitimately bad chunk.

I didn’t like the raised ridge on the sole in the 545; they got rid of that in the 565.

Also, the soles werent as fat in the 565.

I gamed the 565 3&4 iron and 545 5-AW.

The irons were great out of the rough.

My issues with the irons was distance control, especially out of firm courses. My misses tend to be long, low and left with those irons.

I prefer a high cut which is what I am getting with my 900T.

I went back to use MP5 instead of 765s. I had issue to control workability and was having to change my traditional impact point. And preferred the Mizunos. But haven't rule them out, just have them as backups.

If you are going to buy, try them outdoor, not on mats, because the contact will be different. Maybe buy a 6i on ebay to try. Tried to find an answer to this on the 765 thread, but I feel I was crucified because I told my truth.

There is a reason why the 962s are such revered irons to this day...probably because of the V Sole they had way back then?

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

Yeah, I would definitely hit them off turf before I buy. For me, I look at the V-Sole design and find it inspires confidence. Appreciate the feedback from all, as I'm wanting to know what type of player these soles benefit. I'm a sweeper myself.

Forgot to mention, the srixons are lofted strongly on the long irons and wedge side.

The long irons were only 2* apart which I felt was too close and near redundant at times.

Also, the long irons are longer than the U45 if you are a strong iron player. My 3 iron was chasing pass the U45 18*.

On the wedge side, the PW is 44* and the AW (I like to call it attack wedge if that is what they call it?) is at 50*. Again, the AW went far; I wasn’t use to nuking AW 125 yards and it left me with no lofted wedges to mate with because an aftermarket 54* would only go 95 yards for me.

Srixon didn’t gel for me.

Be prepared to do your homework on building correct set for your game.

There’s a reason their standard set is a 4 iron to PW (7 irons).
