Moving to Columbia, SC

Recommended Posts

My wife is going to be doing some training at Ft. Jackson in October (08) and i am looking to tag along before we head to Germany in February (09). Just wondering if anyone has any reccomendations or information for working at area golf courses? I have plenty of experience working outside services, in the shop, and caddying. Any information would be fantastic. Thanks

I am a savillion member at Fort Jackson GC. I would not reccomend working there, but playing/practicing is excellent; double-sided range, 2 chipping greens with bunkers, 2 practice putting greens, 36 holes, and after this summer, a 3 hole par 3 course.

Forest Lake Club is close by, and also the most exclusive club in Columbia. Spring Valley I don't believe has any spaces left for inside work. Good luck finding something when you get here, though. If you don't mind working with rude people (not all of them, but some), give Fort Jackson a try, they are always hiring. Plus, you get free rounds in carts.

I live under a mile from one of the entrances (off Ft. Jackson Blvd, Rickenbaker Dr.) and I had no idea there was a golf course inside the base. I see you say you are a Savillion member.....how do you do that? And how much? You can PM me the details.

As for golf here in Columbia......I like Oak Hill GC.....it is about 3 miles of exit 70 off I-20. They have new management out there and seem to be turning that place around....the course is usually alwasy in great shape. Could be a job opp as well.

If you didn't mind the drive.....you could go about 60 miles east on I-20...off exit 11 is a Very exclusive Golf Club called Sage Valley......I am not lying when i tell you this...it is on par with Augusta National condition wise....I have caddied out there and they pay very well. If you would like some info send me a PM.

I know the guy at Oak Hills, play with him a good bit and he owns a few courses. Oak Hills would be a good place to try. Not a super crowded course, its kinda out of the way. Another one you may want to try is Cobblestone Park. Its the old University Club, and Ginn bought it so it's a top notch and high rent now. I have played Ft. Jackson a few times, and its a decent course. But then again I am a "CIVILIAN"

I practice at Ft. Jackson quite a bit. Civilians can get a membership for $75 a month but there are limitations on making tee times and you're just known as a frequent guest. My favorite layouts in Columbia are Woodcreek Farms, Columbia CC, Windemere and Spring Valley CC. As far as jobs I hear the Fort pays minimum wage and nothing more. I've played Sage Valley 2 times and it's the only place near here with caddies, super nice conditions there. Good luck!

You are going to love playing the two courses on base (Wildcat and Old Hickory).

Played all 3 (The Orignal one as well before they made 1 into 2) back in the early 90's when station there.

Check out Windermere or the University Club. Also play Linrick and Indian River.

Not sure about working at amy of those though...

Sorry, it's been a few months, you can pracrice at Fort Jackson.

The range balls are expensive ($3 for a bucket of 40), but not unreasonable. You can also elect to join the range club, not sure that this is limited to members only, but its worth a try. I think its $200 for unlimited balls for a year.

SO not true.

Linrick, FJ, University Club, Indian River, Windermere, Myrtle BEach 2.5 hours away and lots of courses in Charleston.

Sure hot in the summer, but you can golf 12 months out of the year!

Yea I have been meaning to call out there and ask if I could be a range member. It would be so much more convient since I live right outside the gate of the base. I would go practice alot more which leads to me to being a better golfer. Sounds like a good deal to me
