Baraboo, WI Golf

I am going to be in Baraboo for a week later this summer. Any recommendations on where to play?

I have played Trappers Turn and Wild Rock and have no issue with them, but I'd like to explore more. I know Sand Valley is an option too but I dunno if I want to drop $200+ on one round when that is the cost of 2-3 rounds at other courses.

University Ridge. Lawsonia. Sentry World. All half or less of Sand Valley, within that driving range and excellent venues.

Much appreciated. Sentry World has always been on my list. How do you compare all these with Trappers Turn and Wild Rock? I love Wild Rock except for the fact you need a cart.

I greatly preferred Wild Rock to Trappers Turn.

I haven't played Trappers in years. I like Wild Rock very much, but I think University Ridge and Lawsonia are superior courses. I think Sentry World is easier, yet the conditioning and staff at Sentry are second to none and it is a beautiful course. Sentry World is very much a throw back to classic midwest parkland style. Where a links style player will gravitate to Lawsonia. Lawsonia also has two excellent courses although the links gets more ink. University Ridge (home course to the Badgers) hosts a seniors tour event and has holes that will test a skilled player. It is a little funky in that the front 9 is more akin to links style and the back is more woodland. I'm not knocking Wild Rock, or Sand Valley for that matter, but you could pick any of the three alternatives and you would walk off saying, "That was a really good course."

This is not a joke: Baraboo Country Club is supposed to be quite good!

I really enjoyed Northern Bay when I played it two years ago. It's about 6-7 "replica holes" plus original designs, and I thought it was fun. My playing partner and I mistakenly played the back tees yet both hit the TPC Sawgrass 17th "Island Hole." Fun time!

Northern Bay is a hoot! I played there once and loved all the Augusta holes. But my favorite was the Sawgrass island green. I wasn't planning on going there again because if I drive up that far from Baraboo I am going to splurge and go to Sand Valley (or go to SentryWorld).

Change in plans. My brother-in-law is a member at Lake Arrowhead. I'm going to play the Pines and Lake courses. Can't wait.

There's a storm rolling in. Ugh. We cancelled Lake Arrowhead for tomorrow. I have an early tee time for Wild Rock instead since I'm at the Wilderness Resort. Tuesday I will get to play one of the two courses at least. Hopefully. For sure I'll post a review.

Just got back from playing the Lake course. And wow what a great course it was.

First off the greens were huge and challenging. They had tons of contour and break. Also they rolled fairly fast. I put them equal to Wild Rock's in terms of challenge but also they were in slightly better shape.

As far as the rest of the course the layout is fun and challenging too. And it's fair and straightforward challenge. No gimmick holes. I would say the main challenge is the trees. There is no escape if you hit a wayward shot into them. I wouldn't consider it a tight course but you definitely cannot be too sloppy. Being slightly off is OK but a wild shot is going to hurt. Also there were a few holes with good water that you either had to clear or work the ball around. Same thing goes with bunkers. There weren't huge elevation changes. It was fairly flat but there was good undulation and rolling terrain on every hole.

Overall I loved the course and highly recommend it. Wild Rock probably has the edge on overall challenge but it also costs more to play. And seriously the Lake's greens were awesome.
