DC/MD/VA Amateur Golf Tours

Looking to play a few events this season and have heard some things about each of the following but wanted to see if any of you had any opinions. Thanks

1) Golf Channel Am Tour (Washington D.C.) http://gcamtour.com/tour/washington/

Heard that it's way overpriced (registration fee for season and per event), the rounds take forever (+6 hours) and you inevitably have a couple guys in each division that show up to one tourney, sandbag their handicap, take home the trophy and never play again.

Have played in two tourneys thru NextGen. One was a Ryder Cup-style event at Potomac Shores GC last summer and the other was a team Spring Break tourney down in Myrtle Beach, SC a few weeks ago in early March. Most of the guys are either current college club golfers, or are in their 20s and 30s. Fun if you enjoy the team stuff, but they don't require USGA handicaps so the individual gross side-competitions are a wash.

I've only played a few events in the DC Golf Tour. I had a good time, and it's well run. As a bogie golfer, I was a bit out of my league though. It's run by fellow WRXer @eagle1997.

Have played in these two and you could not have described #1 any better. I played on it for a few years through it being the Michelob Tour and whatever it was after that and then GC. Will never play again.

The DCGT is so much fun. Two man events, different formats every week and just a lot of fun to be had. Anything from better ball to scramble to 6-6-6. Highly recommend.

I’ve been playing on the GOLFWEEK AM Tour for a few years now ... not the DC-Metro district, but the Tidewater/Hampton Roads district(Norfolk/VaBeach).

To be honest, it’s an absolute blast. Each regional tour is a little bit different, but the prices are a bit cheaper than the golf channel one. The HCP index’s are about the same, and the format is the same.

Out of all the tourneys I’ve played on the Am Tour(40 ish) there’s been maybe 2 times a new guy has come in an won the flight. Our local director has a rule that doesn’t allow that to happen. He calls it the “battlefield” promotion. If a guy comes into C flight (14hcp) and shoots a 73 and clears the field by 10 shots he’s not winning a damn thing, his score will get mixed in with the Champ or A flighters.

Like I said earlier, I’ve played in at least 40 tourneys with the GOLFWEEK tour and my feeling is that it’s absolutely AWESOME.
