Removing your hat at end of round

Is this tradition outdated?

I typically just leave my hat on and shake the hands of the folks I played with. To me, there is no lack of or increased 'respect' shown by the hat move.

but tradition = remove your hat before shaking hands.

I assume that the older generation will view not removing your hat as blasphemy.

But I am 'older' generation as well - I just view it as a silly gesture that means nothing...in the same vein as saying "bless you" when someone sneezes, crossing yourself whenever you pass by a church, holding your breath when you pas by a cemetery...all silly.

I do still hold the door for others, open my wife's car door first, allow others to go ahead of me in situations...but removing your hat after a round...nope.

Depends who I’m playing with. My usual group? No not necessary. But if I’m playing with strangers or someone different, I will default to the more respectful gesture.

I remove mine to shake hands however in what is probably considered worse I wear mine in the clubhouse not just the 19th hole.

I do it to show the guys I still have about 35 hairs on my head and therefore technically, not bald.

Pretty much everyone at my club removes their hat to shake hands. I wouldn't necessarily feel disrespected if someone left their hat on when shaking hands with me after a round, but I do appreciate the gesture.

I guess you could see it as a silly gesture that means nothing, but surely you'd have to view shaking hands the same way, right? I mean, it's just a gesture.

I feel like I do it subconsciously at this point.

I don't do it and I don't really remember anybody doing it during a casual round. It's probably different on tour...More of a sign of respect, and maybe also some tradition steeped in there, too.

In my normal weekend group. filled with 30-40 yr olds nobody removes their hat after a round.

Noticed in junior tournaments that everyone removes their hat when shaking hands. I personally don't, but maybe I should start.

I do it more so cause i find it a funny bit of professional at the end of it. Most of my friends that I play with are hackers so they joke about it and credit it as a No Laying Up style tour sauce move to remove their hats and shake hands after carding a triple digit round.

I don't remove mine unless someone in the group chooses to remove theirs, which is probably more the norm in my age group. I would say I'm in the younger generation compared to the majority of the members on WRX since I'm only 60 years old. By the way, get off my lawn...

Actually, I think removing your hat is a relatively new thing. Its hard to find old video, but for sure Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson did NOT remove their hats when Payne won at Pinehurst #2. I see it more and more, but I'm not bothered one way or the other. I do find it a little ironic that players will take their hat off to shake hands, yet leave their hat on indoors when having a beverage after the round. That's where gentlemen remove their hats, indoors.

removing your hat is a show of respect. Like not wearing your hat at the dinner table. Probably started centuries ago when gentlemen would tip/or remove their hat for a lady.

I don't think that a show of respect ever goes out of style, like shaking hands, etc.

I'm 28, therefore a millennial that is ruining everything, but I take my hat of to shake hands at the end of a round. It's not that hard.

As I'm removing my hat I'm also reaching into my wallet to give out cash.

Found a few more. Ken Venturi's FC didn't remove his hat, Ken did, at Congressional. Larry Miza kept his visor on, Greg Norman wasn't wearing a hat, at the Masters. 86 Open Championship, Norman's FC leaves his hat on. 1965, Kel Nagle leaves his hat on the congratulate Gary Player at Bellerive. I think taking the hat off to shake hands is only recently become the standard.

My regular group we don't even shake hands, usually just head to the clubhouse to settle up our bets. But when playing a tournament or with people other than my regular group I always remove hat and shake hands. Gentleman's game so act like a Gentleman, even though that may not be common these days.

40's here, been doing it since I started golfing as a junior. Was taught to do it as a sign of respect. Been doing it every since.

I always take my hat or sunglasses off to shake hands, always will.

I am a fellow millennial also destroying the country, I also take my hat off at the end of the round to shake hands. I don't remember even learning to do it, just always have. Always make sure to wash the laundry detergent off your hands with a towel first.

I must be taking things for granted and therefore this thread confuses me. I can't even remember a group that I've ever played in that hasn't removed hats after a round, and I'm also including the occasional pick up games with complete strangers. I guess I'll leave myself out of this discussion from here... :wave:

I'm 17 and I do it every round. I'm not offended by those who don't but I think its a nice and respectful gesture to your playing partners

It was something I was taught by my father nearly 30 years ago when I started playing. After everyone holes out on the 18th green, you remove your hat, shake everyone's hand, and thank them for their company. It's not that hard and a simple sign of etiquette and respect.

You just spent 4+ hours with this other person, it seems that those that don't remove their hat and shake are just simply lazy or really didn't care to spend the time with you in the end.

Some of the younger guys don’t even shake hands in a traditional manner on tour. It’s more of a bro shake and hug.

I think it’s a great gesture that upholds the tradition of the sport, but here is one thing that I just don’t get. I see a lot of the pros grab their hat with their left hand, run their right hand through their sweaty hair after a 4 hour round of golf, and then go in for the handshake. How about grabbing the hat in the right hand, do the hair fix, switch the hat to the other hand and then shake, or wait to arrange the locks until after the handshake.
