Early Season Sand Valley Conditions???

BG5

Recommended Posts

Considering an early trip to see what Sand Valley is all about. Can anyone comment on the current condition of Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes and the The Sandbox? I am not overly picky and understand this is a new resort but am just curious how the courses are looking.....how are the greens running and not exactly sure how hard this long winter was on the course

Cheers!

I had a time for 4/28 that was cancelled.....although the snow was melted, we had a lot of late snow, and I mean a lot.....I ran into my buddy at our home course who was in charge of getting the tee times for SV and he stated they were currently only letting out guests staying on property, not day guests. I would call and ask as conditions can turn around quickly....we've had some really warm days lately, but also quite a bit of rain too. For reference, I'm in NE Wisc. About 2 hours from SV, but we got roughly the same amount of snow as they did and temps have been similar, but.not sure about the rain in and around SV.

Any alternatives to eating at the resort? Their wine list is over the top expensive. Silver Oak which retails for $75 is $225 and most restaurants sell it for around $125. That iis uber ridiculous. Other wines have similar markups.

Meals are priced like they were downtown Chicago. They should be much cheaper in the woods of Wisconsin.

The food at SV was outstanding last season. I mean outstanding. Well worth what they are asking for. The wine? Yeah, that's a different story. No one is forcing you to order a bottle of Silver Oak and it's not like you're going to find it at a more reasonable price down the street. Restaurant wine is a rip off in general but their high end is a rip off on steroids. Order the walleye or pork tenderloin, a couple of Spotted Cows, or glass pours from the list for a few bucks more, and you've barely spent $40. No, skipping dinner at SV is a missed opportunity to put the perfect bow on a great day of golf. Also, you're probably going to spend less than you should for the awesome lunch you'll have at Craig's Porch, so there's that...

Was this your first visit to a resort of any type?

I am at Sand Valley right now. Played the Sandbox yesterday (hot and sunny), Sand Valley today (in the rain), and will play Mammoth Dunes tomorrow. The winter took its toll on a number of greens - especially on the SV course. Four holes on the front nine at SV still have temp greens, but all holes at MD and the Sandbox are now open. Greens on all the courses are running pretty slow, and they appear to be trying not to cut the greens too low in order to help them recover from the winter stress.

I haven't been to SV yet, but I've been to almost every other upscale resort in the USA and many overseas.

Why do you ask such a silly question?
