Oahu May 11-21

Howdy all, short time member, first time poster here.

I'm heading over to Oahu with the family May 11th - 21st, and am planning on getting out for a round (or two). From my research here it looks like Turtle Bay is the must-play course.

Although I don't have an official handicap, I'm on my way down from 23ish after getting back into the game after a 10 year hiatus.

Putting it out there - if anyone here is in the area around this time, it'd be great to get out!

cheers

Mark

I was severely underwhelmed by turtle bay and will not be going back. Play Koolau just for fun, and if you can swing it play Kaneohe Klipper on the Marine Corps Base.

cheers mate, thanks for the info! Ko'Olau is definitely on the list too - I hear it's a bit easier but visually stunning. As an aussie with no military ties, it may be tricky to get out to Kaneohe Klipper, but I'll see what can be swung :)

Not sure if you're being sarcastic about Koolau being easier...the back tees are rated 78.2/153 :swoon:

Oh geez. My research might've been incorrect then - I'll pack and extra couple of sleeves of golf balls then :swoon:

Edit : oh I was thinking of Ko'Olina. either way I'll be hoping for some beautiful views to make up for the difficult golf.

Can anyone provide some feedback on the Makaha Valley course? I'm just staying out west in Koolina, and have never been there before. Is it decent?

I played it once 23 years ago lol. I heard its not in a maintained condition. But since you're at Ko olina, you have Hoakalei, Kapolei, Ewa, Prince, and coral creek near by.

Yeah thanks, hopefully someone has played it this century and can provide an update :) Ewa Beach is awesome and never get tired of that one, but have played Hawaii Prince numerous times and it's a little boring. Hoakalei and Kapolei look awesome, but those visitor rates are a little aggressive. I see Turtle Bay has a 3 day unlimited pass at both courses for $300 as well which seems like a great deal. Thanks again

I've played Oahu in this Century (barely). I mostly go to the Big Island now. Have you played Royal Kunia? Great views of Pearl Harbor. Coral Creek used to be fun to play. But I've heard they might have some maintenance issues. I used to really like Kapolei. To me, it was a more reasonably priced version of Ko'Olina.

Thanks tad. Yes, have done Royal Kunia and really enjoyed that course. Did Coral Creek once, and I got stuck behind a bunch of Japanese 5 somes and it was a 6 hour round so won't be doing that again. I'm surprised they even allow that there, but I guess $$$ talks. I'll try to look for a deal at Kapolei, thanks again.

The Palmer course at Turtle Bay is worth playing.  I wouldn't pay to play the Fazio course.  Ko'Olina is pricey, but nice.  Kapolei is the best maintained public course other than Ko'olina.  Royal Kunia has some great views and is a fun course.  Ko'olau is just target golf at its worst.  Rule is take as many balls as your handicap is high.  Not sure what the rates are for tourists at any of the courses.  I would be surprised if any are in the $60-80 range.

lol, I meant that as I thought it wasn't worth playing or driving out there to play after the couple of times I played :-) I think I'll still wait till Tigers team gets done with it before I go there.

Mid-pac is in excellent shape right now because of the annual tournament going on in april.

Played there and surfed 7th hole back in '79 -'82.

Don't expect much, but right on the ocean and the wind will be blowing for sure.
