Feels vs Reals: swaying vs turning in the BS

Recommended Posts

I've been swaying in my BS lately due to some lessons where my coach really wanted me to focus on loading into my back leg /foot. Because I have years of experience playing hockey/baseball... my hips are also moving laterally to do this. When I do a proper turn about my spine... it almost feels like I'm loading into my front leg, but when I look in the mirror, I'm staying pretty central.

Is this normal/expected? I feel like I don't have tons of power from this position, but I know it's correct because I'll place my bag or a chair next to my back hip and when I turn properly... my hip actually moves slightly away from the object.

I had a lesson not too long ago where I found out that I was doing the same thing. When I started making a proper turn it felt exactly like you described: like all my weight was over the front leg. If I hadn't seen the video of my swing making a proper turn I'd have sworn I was about to fall over on my left (front) side.

Did you get used to it?

In my experience, I actually focus on keeping my weight forward for maximum power and consistent contact. A pro gave me this advice after observing me hitting balls on the range. He said that because my weight wasn't on the front side, I would early extend my arms and chunk or thin my shots. Keeping my weight forward allowed me to feel like I was striking down on the ball.

EDIT: I should also add that I would lose my spine angle.... instead rotating around the spine, I would lean backwards.

I did, but since it's a new behavior it's kind of hit or miss. If I haven't been stretching like i'm supposed to then it doesn't work for me. And I can tell based on my distances. If I revert back to my old swing I lose 20-30 yards.

What's odd is that when my instructor got me loading into my back side right... I gained a ton of distance... at least 12-15% on all my clubs. However... I think I started turning a proper turn into a sway so my distance stayed there but my contact and consistency tanked.

I'm going out for a twilight round Thurs, hopefully by myself... So I'll be able to work on it on the course.

For me the distance comes from staying on the left side (or at least feeling like I am, in reality I'm making a full weight shift, just staying centered while doing it) combined with a flatter plane and a draw swing. Staying centered is providing better contact and allowing the other stuff to happen. When I first started doing it right I picked up 20 yards with the club I was using. When my yardages start dropping close to what they used to be somethings not right.

I battled swaying for years. I never could hit ball well if I let my right leg straighten a bit to get a better hip turn (would lose posture). However, I never could figure out how to keep my right knee steady and not restrict my hip turn. Feeling like I was "sitting" on my right butt cheek helped, but then I would sometimes over do it and get too low.

I've found that lightly clenching my right glute in my backswing has done wonders. It creates stability and allows me to rotate both my hips and upper body without losing posture or swaying. At the top of my backswing a it does feel like a fair amount of weight on my left foot, but that feeling has reduced over time. I think it's just because the reps have "retrained" my brain over what a centered turn feels like.

I found this article where Brooks Koepka talks about the right glute in the backswing:
