Stuck on PING s55's

Recommended Posts

I've tried a handful of iron sets since I got my Ping Wrx s55's (nippon 1150x with cushin insert ... plus 3/4" and softstepped once) and just when I think I was out ... they keep coming back in!

Just very VERY forgiving for such a traditional (to my eye) head shape. Perhaps the custom swing weighting and length breakout helps

I've tried:

Callaway x- protos (DG s300)

Ping iblades (Nippon 950x)

Bridgestone j15 musclebacks (PX 6.5 and DG Pro s300)

Ping Zing 2's (JZ stiff)

Titleist Tmb's (Nippon Modus 105x)

Even tried working in some long irons like Rapture J's and Razr XF's but the s55 six iron and the Apex hybrids have them handily whipped

Anyone else in the same boat?

The latest has me changing shafts in my T-MB's to PX LZ 6.0 120's ... my pro has these shafts in his cb's and loves them. I also love the feel and how well they load and launch for my swing

((Thanks for listening, my mother has been in ICU for 2 weeks and I need some distractions))

They are terrific irons. But don’t forget those Nippon 1150gh shafts. I started using them this year and I absolutely love them.

There are worse situations you could be stuck in, like in a long line at the Wendy's drive thru or knocking up your side chick.

The S55's are an all time great. No question about it.

I just picked up a set of i200's with the PX LZ 6.0's. I had a set of iBlades with the LZ 6.0's and couldn't get along with the spin rate even though the dispersion was very good. Spin is down a little with the i200's and dispersion is just as good if not a little better. Very pleased thus far.

Ha! Talk about timing :)

I actually did a search yesterday for S55 threads after having a really good ball-striking day on Sunday - after putting them back in the bag - and started searching eBay for backup sets.

Got paired up with a couple cool guys and on the 17th one asked - "do you normally play this well?" LOL.

I answered - off the tee I'm usually not bad, but the irons? No, no this is a really good day :nyam:

I hit a 7I approach from 175 to a back pin over a bunker that could be as good a pass at the ball I make this year (the birdie putt not so much)

They really do feel lovely when middled.

Like you I have a similar list of "players irons" that have come and gone, but I've had the S55s for almost 4 years now, and they always sneak back in the bag.

Used to say the same about my S57s. But then my son stole them and I ended up with i E1s. They're not bad, but I really want to get back to a ping blade type soon. :)

I know exactly where you are coming from. Everything from my age to my game says I should not be playing the irons I now have and love. I don't have the S55's, I have the 56's. If you go by my swing speed and iron distances you would think that the G400's with regular flex shafts would be the best fit for me. They're not. There is just something about the S series. They just have the "it" factor.

I often hit my brothers S56's and it takes lots of willpower to not go pick up an S series set as I don't want to be seen as copying. . They seem to cut through a headwind like no other set I have hit and are half a club to a club longer than any iron set I have, anyone else find them long? (currently have 588cb's, Wilson F5's and I25's) one day I will buckle.

S55's are on my short list of irons to look out for although with a Ping demo day next week I'm excited to try the I200's and IBlades. I can't seem to get away from my Apex Pro's (14).

Best to mom. ICU's no fun. Spent 2 weeks there this past Xmas, hope she's able to go home soon!

the toe forgiveness is big

Mine are 1* strong as well

Have had all the prior sets of s series blades and think the s55 is #1 for sure

Have never heard someone not like the sole on them ... lie angle?

not sure but i went from fourteen tc888 which I absolutely adored and loved in every way to the s55 and just the way they go through the ground just feels off to me. the lie is fine, I just can't really explain it.

Those of you that have had your S55s bent, did you send to Ping, or have a shop/you do it? I'm thinking of going a degree strong and bending them to black dot from blue.... maybe just the lower irons even... Mine are not beauty queens so I don't know if sending them to Ping is really worth it....

I had to abandon my i e1s for my s55s due to not being able to hit the i e1s off tight fairway lies. Swapped the shafts out and the s55s w/ modus 120 are pretty much everything I desire in a set of irons. The i e1s w/ PX 6.0 May be on the way to the BST.

Played the ie1's, cobra mb/cb, and i200's for the past 3 years after playing the s55's for 2+ years. Just put the s55's back in the bag and not looking back. They look awesome, are very forgiving on the toe (my miss), and like the poster said above, they are better for me off tighter and thinner lies. My misses lose a bit more yardage than the i200's yet they stay straighter ( I think cause they spin a bit more). They will definitely be in the bag for next week's tournament.

Only problem is I don't have the gap wedge and don't want to use the i200 gap I have. Guessing I may have to pull the trigger on the stealth 2.0 50 degree very soon.

All in all, the best iron set I have ever had and soooo thankful I didn't unload them

The only things I grade the S55 better than the S56 are the sound and looks. The 55 receives 10 times more compliments on looks than the 56. Everything else (at least performance wise) is basically a wash. I played the 56 for 3 years and this winter traded for a set of new 55 heads 3-W. Finally got them put together about three weeks ago and they've now transitioned to the bag. Everything considered the 55 is probably the 3rd (maybe 2nd) best iron Ping has ever made behind the eye 2 in its various forms and i3+ Blades. And to be honest about the 55, there's nothing new out there that I've found to perform any better.

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

S55 somehow has it all. You get blade-like looks and control with ample forgiveness. You get a thin sole that’s playable with a little bit of extra bounce, but the bounce never actually gets in the way, only helps (for the record, I usually hate bounce in irons). Feel is great, and durability is excellent. I can’t even begin to guess how many shots I’ve hit with the 7 iron, and it looks like what a forged blade would after about 5 rounds and a few practice sessions. It’s not even an iron that needs the perfect shaft either. I’ve had two sets of S55’s, one with CFS R shafts and one with KBS Tour X. Somehow I could play with the CFS R and I’m a 165-170 ball speed player with the driver.

I tried around 20 iron sets a year from 2010-2015 when I got my S55’s and haven’t switched since. I didn’t even consider iBlade when it came out, because S55 was so good, and I’ve never been the guy to be content with what I already have in the bag.

Everyone who’s not playing it is really doing themselves a disservice when you think about it.

I'm going to have to get a set of the 55's one of these days. I do like the looks of them a little better. The fact that guys on tour are still playing them says a lot about them.
