Downside of 14 way bags?

Recommended Posts

The last time I bought a bag I don’t even remember 14 way being an option... is the main purpose just for organization? I’ve read posts that claim they help prevent bag chatter and other posts saying they cause more bag chatter. Which is true? Do people find it more difficult to remove/replace a club with its own dedicated slot! Any other input would be appreciated thanks!

Been around forever - personally, I think they are too heavy and really serve little purpose. No law against your grips touching to my knowledge. I like to move guys' clubs around to different slots in their 14 slot bags - seems to cause issues, which gives me insight into the issues that cause them to need the dividers!

And if you like them, use them.

I am a fan of a 14 way top and have used one for the last 5 years.

I do think that they cause more bag chatter, especially when walking because the clubs have more gaps between them vs. irons resting on each other.

It€™s not difficult to remove clubs. If anything, it makes it easier as it prevents the grips from tangling from one another. I also like it because it keeps any shafts and grips from rubbing on one another. I have a little OCD and like the organization of having a dedicated slot for each club. I think its definitely for those players who like to be organized.

Most 14 way bags are a little on the heavy side. My current Nike Performance Carry Bag is on its last legs and it weighs around 7 pounds. I walk only half the time so it isn€™t too bad but Im looking to get the Sun Mountain 4.5 14 way or Ping Hoofer 14 to be my next bag which are around 4.5-5 pounds as I do want to get a little lighter.

There is no down side for me. Very little weight difference and I’m OCD enough I really like all 14 clubs to be in their same spot every time...

I like 14-way for the organization, but prefer other divider arrangements for walking to prevent chatter (the sound, not so much the dings). I have an Ogio Ozone Cart 14-way and Shredder Stand Wood-E and the Wood-E, and I've had 14-way stand bags in the past. The smaller or non-existent club gabbing of the Wood-E dividers greatly diminishes iron chatter sound since in each row the heads nest right up against each other and don't have room to swing/rotate and chatter.

I had a Silencer Cart for 6-7 months and loved it until the grip mechanisms started to fail... by the end, 5 had completely lost grip (didn't engage) and 2 more would engage but not with enough compression to hold a club in place. Unfortunately, at the time I did my warranty exchange they didn't have anymore '17 Silencers in stock and the '18 colors hadn't been released yet, which is how I ended up with the Shredder Stand (along with a Tyro Cart that I exchanged at PGASS for store credit).

I bought a 14-way bag for the first time recently, mainly because it was a good quality bag but cheap (a second hand Honma bag, but very good condition). There are no courses around me where we can carry, so the weight is not a huge problem for me.

Pros: ???

Cons: arranging clubs? I used to arrange my clubs in pairs and triplets in my previous six-way bags, but with my 14-way, the clubs are harder to organize in a logical way.

That said, I am not OCD, and it doesn't bother me massively.

The point about causing more bag chatter rather than less is valid in my experience. There is more distance between clubs, but not enough to eliminate clashing, so they bang together harder. The Ogio Silencer seems to deal with this issue, however.

I bought the bag for other reasons, mainly storage and pockets, but the 14-way dividers are not a plus for me in a bag that I am otherwise happy with.

And if you carry 14 clubs, an orange whip and alignment rod you'll need to make room for those.

I hate them with a passion. I've tried them many times and keep going back to the titleist 4 way or 5 way top.

The 14 way is annoying especially when you try to put your irons back and your woods / putter are covering the complete bag.

I hate them but I keep trying them because I'm an idiot.

Lol. I'm not trying to make you go back but when I first got the bag, I messed around with the club order numerous times and ran into the same issue. But, I shared this post from a few years ago of the ideal setup and I haven't changed since. http://www.golfwrx.c...n#entry10912145

No right or wrong answer, just depends on your personal preference. On a push or riding cart, I'll use my 14/15 way cart bag, if I'm carrying or just practicing, I'm using a light weight 4 way stand bag. I have 15 individual slots so it's holding an Orange Whip, alignment rods. The only issue is it's a tight fit if you want to test out a couple of extra clubs. Weight is a factor too, that's why I'll just use it on a push cart or riding cart.

But I do like the organization that a 14/15 way divider system offers - but that's me.

I like 14 way bags because I don't have problems stuffing a club back in its slot and the grip getting caught on other clubs.

This is really only (mostly) guaranteed if every slot has full length dividers. I've had several bags that didn't (usually full-length between rows but not columns) and they snag just as much as, or more than, any other bag.

big fan of my sun mountain 4.5 14-way bag. only downside is a little more weight than i'd prefer. but i mostly ride or push cart with them so not a problem. i'm a little OCD with organizing things, so it's GREAT for that. a place for everything and everything in it's place. i also like being able to flip the clubs upside down in their individual dividers when i pack up the clubs in my SKB hard case for shipping. works for all irons, putter, and hybrid, not so much with driver, but in general makes me feel like clubs are better protected. i am thinking of getting a 2.5+ bag for when i want to walk and carry, but in general quite happy with the 14-way. especially since the dividers are full-length.

I have a Ping Pioneer 14 way bag with a putter well and love it. I use it on my CG 3.5+. I had a SM Sync before and the Pioneer is better organized and has more storage, if you need that.

I hate 14-way dividers for a few reasons: the extra weight (every ounce makes a difference to me when walking), I can never come up with a way to organize my clubs that I like (I think I like to organize my clubs asymmetrically, and all 14 way bags I've seen are too symmetrical, if that makes sense), and I often only carry 11 or 12 clubs so empty slots seems like a waste.

Doesn't mean they're no good, they're just not for me.

Remembered another reason- I hate that you have to cram the sock portion of headcovers into the slot, or if you don't they scrunch up.

Only downside of a 14 way is you can't really decide to carry 15 or 16 clubs with you if you're going to the range to mess about or maybe do some on course head to head. Otherwise, the organization and anti club tangle are way better than 4 or 5 way. This coming from a guy who currently owns two 14 way bags, a 4 way and a 5 way.

I loved my 8way Callaway, but nobody does 8 way now, so I think I'll try a Callaway 7 way.

You might want to check out an Ogio with the Wood-E 7-Way arrangement... it works quite well on a push-cart.

In my Sun Mountain bag it's not a problem slipping two clubs into one slot. Plus it has a 15th wide slot for putter and/or driver. So 15 or 16 clubs isn't an issue at all. Plus if you're going to the range you can always leave the putter in the trunk.

  • 1 year later...

From a practical everyday day stand point I don’t think it makes much difference. I think it’s more of a personality thing. If you’re an organization person, a place for everything and everything in its place, you will probably prefer the 14 individual dividers. If you’re more casual you’ll probably look at 14 dividers as taking things too far.
