Central Coast Golf

I am headed down to Pismo for the Car Show weekend, and planned on playing Avila Beach. Not paying their rates(Costco or Golf Moose), which are crazy, but I get that it's coastal golf.

Anyone play out there lately and know the course conditions?

Playing with a buddy who just started playing golf. Should be fun!

I live in San Luis. My advice is to skip Avila. Course conditions are sketchy, at best. Go play Morro Bay. The course is in better shape and will be much kinder to your buddy. In the south county there are Monarch Dunes and Cypress Ridge, both fine courses. Skip Blacklake. Further north is Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles, another fine course.

My buddy picked up the coupon from Costco, so its not like it's a choice at this point. I'm sure its better than a few courses out this way. I'm in Fresno.

Advice for playing out at Avila? I've seen pictures from Greenskeeper.org and it looks like there is a few holes where driver is not needed and then there are others where you can let it rip. Any truths?

Hole 1 - don't hit it into the creek

2 - Terrible hole. Aim between that green and the cart path.

3 - Watch out for the OB on the right. The one on the left is obvious. Hit your second shot way left as it will roll way right.

4 - Don't go left or too far right.

5 - Bang driver and get up to the green.

6 - Nice par 3.

7 - Terrible hole. No driver needed. Avoid the bunker as it is horrible.

8 - Nice par 3.

9 - Driver not needed but most guys hit it anyway. Favor the left side as you can easily bounce down into the creek. This might be my favorite hole on the course.

10 - Straight forward.

11- Hit your drive to the right side so you get a clear shot through the old railroad cut.

12 - Hard hole. Tee shot needs to go at least 200 to have a fair shot at the green. The further you hit your tee shot the narrower the fairway gets with OB left and creek right. No shame in baling right on your approach.

13 - Straight forward par 5. Don't hit it into the street though.

14 - Driver not needed unless you can draw it around the corner.

15 - Par 3 that plays a club longer than the distance.

16 - Dogleg left. You've got to get it to the dogleg to have a shot at the green.

17 - Par 3.

18 - The further right you hit your tee shot the better angle for your approach. The creek hugs the right side of the fairway so this is risk/reward.

Go play Morro Bay. You'll have a better time, especially your new-to-golf friend. Maybe afterward you can head over there.

Where do you normally play slocagolfer? I usually play Morro once a week and bounce around to the others depending on schedule

That's pretty much what I do. I'm in two and a half groups. My main group mostly plays Morro since Dairy is nine holes now. We will venture to the other courses generally once a month. We like Hunter, Paso GC, and Monarch. Cypress has a shotgun on Wednesdays which is that group's day so we don't play there anymore. That's a money game and we have a full group. The other group plays all over as a number of them are North County guys. We avoid the hot months up there though. There's no $ involved in that group. The half group has a regular Friday game at Morro but I can't make that one too often.

We have a good group that does a little skins game Friday at 5pm at Seapines too and then the Sunday morning skins at MB. Besides that whoever I can get to tag along with me. Let me know if you want to meet up for a round sometime

Thank you for the offer but my golf dance card is pretty much filled up.

I’m in Los Osos. Played Avila a couple of months ago and it was pretty good. They had a car show so we played the two little par threes for the “event course”. Had fun there.

I’d be interested in skins at MB on Sundays. Details?

Nice I'm in Osos as well. I've only played Avila once and I think had kind of the same thing happen for a concert. Course had some major issues and I'm in no rush to go back. The skins game isn't huge but everyone throws in 20 and tees off early . Good group of guys

Gross and net skins? What time?

Just net and then they do low putts, closest to pin on 4 and 10. Nothing too serious but nice group. Most of the guys are older so they play the white tees (doesn't change my score a ton lol). 7 am

Visiting from the Bay Area this weekend and have reserved a tee time at Morro Bay Saturday morning if anyone's interested. If there are other places to play in the area that you guys think is better, let me know. Can only play Saturday morning 2/8 with a tee time no later than 9AM. Thanks

If you've never played Morro Bay before, everything breaks to the ocean!

I played Morro Bay last Summer. If you can putt those greens you deserve a trophy. The saying everything breaks toward the bay is scary true. The ball defies gravity. Also the longest damn par 3 is 16 I think. 230 yards or some nonsense

That's 17. It is downwind and a bit downhill.

It's a long one but definitely doable since there's not much in the way in terms of hazards. All in all a real fun course. Going to try some course in paso the next time i go down there.

Hunter Ranch or Paso Robles Golf Club?

Definitely want to try Hunter. I think I've seen some Golf Moose deals for that track a couple times. heard good things.

I played Hunter Ranch 2 weeks ago and it’s in beautiful condition.

Going to start getting hot up there soon.

Monarch Dunes is a course I would play again. Sandpiper is still on my bucket list.
