400 cc or smaller driver?

gbartkogbartko Whooooo!Members Posts: 663 ✭✭
Hi All,

I’m not familiar with any JDM whatsoever. Can anybody point me in the direction of any manufacturers that make < 400 cc drivers? I currently play a TaylorMade R510 TP and would like to move to something more forgiving and recent.

Thanks in advance!

You need to realize that “more forgiving “ and “under 400cc’s” are impossible concepts to put together.

Given the laws of physics, the larger the driver, the more forgiving it can be made. Larger footprint =Higher MOI=more stable on mishits=more “forgiving”.

I also got a kick out of that.

Want something more forgiving? Easy, go over 400cc's. Plenty (literally dozens) of options out there that are more forgiving.

Could go for a happy medium and (dare I say) get something generic like a Titleist D3, M1 430/440, etc.

Forgiveness is a relative term and I thought I clearly implied “more forgiving than a 510 TP”. Thanks for the physics lesson though guys, very helpful!

Mizuno Craft 611 is 410cc and very lovely. Could be ordered 1-1/2 degrees upright or flatter from the standard 58 deg lie angle too.

Don't be tempted by the Yonex eZone 380... 380cc's and one of the all time best looking metal wood heads, but feel and performance was not up to its beauty - whereas the SYard mentioned did get very good reviews for its results.

A properly designed variable face design can actually make more forgiveness difference than just a 60cc difference in physical size. If the face is designed well, an off center strike will still maintain high ballspeed even with the smaller physical size. Some people prefer the larger size as it gives more overall confidence at address but some (like me) feel the smaller, more compact heads are easier to turn over and control. It also depends on if you misses are more heel/toe vs. high/low on the face.

The S-Yard t.388 is a shallow face so if you miss high/low then you may want something with a deeper face. In this case it will not be more forgiving than something like the R510TP. If you miss heel/toe however, it does a fantastic job on off center hits. At address the t.388 is one of the best pear shaped heads since some of the older Titleist drivers.

I can't get behind their appearance. They look like a **** carnival from the head to the shaft. But like you have said before; we can't try these before buying, and this is indeed an expensive hobby.

S-Yard T.388 was not punishing in my opinion. When hit in center it felt fantastic, when I miss it's just as bad as any other driver I've hit.

S-Yard XV is really great if you're willing to go over 400cc. It's got a deep face and from address it looks barely bigger than T.388. I'll post a pic when I get home.

the new roddios are VERY small and compact , look more like a larger 2 wood than a driver. the type s is very pear shaped. this wud pack a mean punch, but I doubt it wud be very forgiving. liked the look a lot, wrong shaft for me to play it , but I still might take them or a range session to see what they are like. .

the ebst small compact head ive hot by a long way is stil the kasco dna 340. thing is a brute and the feel of the super hyten steel is fantastic.

Mizuno Mp Type I is (at address) a dead knock off of R510TP but 10% bigger. I'm a huge fan of the TP and used it for last 2 years the MP was chosen because of the likeness in looks, feel and sound. It is also longer and more forgiving. I went with shaft upgrade and glad I did.

Here's T.388 on the left and XV on the right. Head size is almost the same but XV is deeper.

One thing I don't understand. Why does everyone laugh off the suggestion of a smaller driver. I and most others, can hit our 3 wood much straighter that our drivers, with a sweet spot the size of what, a dime or a nickel? Henrik Stenson uses his 3 wood, most of the time and he is always competitive. I use a TaylorMade Sldr Mini and lowered my handicap from 13 to 9 and fairways hit from 47% to 68%. Maybe we can all be a little more helpful and stop assuming everyone needs a 460cc Driver. Maybe some of you should buy an old persimmon driver and see how some of us learned how to play this great game. Sorry, I just needed to say this.
