Blackwolf Run or The Bull @ Pinehurst Farm

Headed to Milwaukee in July for work and will play atleast 1 round of golf while I’m there. Iï¸ have played both the Straits and the Irish previously.

Would like to play all of these eventually but wanted some input.

Blackwolf Run River - $345

Blackwolf Run Meadow Valleys - $245

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms - $150

If I play 1 round I’m think Iï¸ just play the Bull.

If I play on the front end and back end of the trip I’m thinking Iï¸ play the Bull first and then at the end of the trip Iï¸ play meadow valleys in the morning and get the cheaper, afternoon and replay rate for the river. Would love input.

Will play Erin Hills, Lawsonia and Sand Valley at a later date. I’m from Virginia so will not have a car to travel to those this time.

I havent played the others, but you wont be disappointed with the Bull. When I was up there they had a dew sweeper rate before like 7:30 AM that was almost 1/2 price. You might check that out.

Being an hour away in Milwaukee with no car is gonna be a struggle to get there before 7:30. I’m thinking we are going to rent a car and probably shoot for a 9:00 am tee time.

Personally... I'd play Erin Hills this time and play it next time as well. Its much closer and IMO a much better golf course.

I️ was thinking Erin Hills was further away, glad you mentioned that it’s closer

I believe EH is 45 minutes from downtown Milwaukee. Blackwolf and The Bull will take you an hour or so. So not really that much closer but it also depends on where you stay. I think it's like 15-20 miles closer

I just got back from playing Balckwolf Run RIver course, I got the earliest tee time (7:30am) and was $235 w/cart. That course was really nice, it seemed to be one of the more fair Pete Dye courses ive played. Beautiful design, scenery is amazing and the condition is superb. I am heading back in a few weeks (will probably play the straights) but the River course is worth it in my opinion. I stayed downtown, took an hour to get there.

You can't go wrong with any of the choices. Here are a couple of notes on each, from my point of view...

1) Blackwolf Run River--this is my favorite of the American Club courses. It certainly does not have the scenery of The Straits, but if parkland style golf is your thing, you can't find any better courses than this. Hard, but still fair. Scenic. And if you play it on the back end of another course at The American Club, a pretty good value.

2) Blackwolf Run Meadow Valley--This course doesn't get the notoriety it deserves. The front nine is fairly tame, more along the line of a traditional 'resort course'. (although 7, 8 and 9 are really fun holes.) But the back nine is part of what The American Club calls The Championship Course. The Championship Course was the one used in the last Women's US Open. The back nine is full of solid, hard, beautiful golf holes.

3) The Bull at Pinehurst Farms--What a good public golf course! The first 4 holes are a bit uneventful, but once you start on #5, it is just good golf hole after good golf hole. Plenty of risk/reward opportunities and just a blast to play. If you can go out later in the day, they have some pretty good discounts.

5) Erin Hills--I know you said you would save that for another trip, but in my opinion, this is the best golf course in Wisconsin and my favorite golf course I have ever played. Conditions are great, holes are hard but fair.

If I could play these courses every day I would play 40% of my rounds at Erin Hills, 25% at BWR-River, 20% at The Bull and 15% at BWR-Meadow Valley

Question for the guys in the area- what is typical weather like in mid October? Looking to do a guys golf trip (8 people) from 10/10-10/14. My searches showed average temps of 59-61 for highs and lows around 39/40. Seems a bit chilly for us to come from the Northeast and should possibly look at going south instead. We were going to fly in and play Erin Hills then do the Dyeabolical Package at Kohler. Thoughts?

Mid-October you should be alright, highs will be in the 60s most days. If you're heading out early morning, you may have to deal with some frost delays depending on the overnight lows but typically October is still a semi-safe weather month for golfing around here.

Thx!

Any thoughts on the Bull at Pinehurst vs Lawsonia Links for a round?

Got a group of 8 going the end of September playing Irish, Meadow Valley, Straits, and Erin Hills. The Blackwolf River was booked up, so we're looking at either the Bull or Lawsonia for our last round

lawsonia links 10 out of 10 times. The bill is only ok if you are getting a great twilight rate. It’s a typical Nicklaus course that should be about $60-70.

This is a bit harsh. The bull is a great challenging play with many unique golf holes. Conditions have never been bad in my experience over the last 5 years. I love lawsonia links too, but the bull isnt a bad course.

Looking at your list I would decide if you want another links course in the rotation. You have the straights, erin hills, and the irish (although this one plays less links style). Lawsonia is another fun links layout so if thats what you want it is a good add. If you want to switch up the style then you can't go wrong with the Bull. It's worth the rate they charge in my opinion.

About a 1.5 drive to Lawsonia from the Sheboygan area, not bad but factor that in.  Hwy 23 is almost 4 lane all the way to Fond du Lac now so it's an easier drive, but once you get to FDL it's fairly slow going.  Rosendale cops will not hesitate to give you a speeding ticket!  There is your warning 😉

Lawsonia Links is my favorite course, the green complexes are 2nd to none.  I also really like The Bull.  It's a tough course with some really pretty holes and surrounds.  It would be a tough call, but.if you don't feel like driving then play the Bull, if you don't mind venturing out, get out and play Lawsonia!
