Firestone CC Questions

Recommended Posts

I won a trip to Firestone at auction and had some questions for those who have stayed/played. The package was for two rounds and two nights stay on property. We have the option of staying in the club rooms or the villas, what are your experiences with both?

As I said, we have two rounds on property. Obviously going to play the South, but not sure on the second round. For those who have played the North and the West, which one did you like the most? Or we could always play the south twice... Also, we are thinking of getting another round in while on our trip. What are the top public and private courses in the area?

Lastly, I haven't spent a lot of time in the Cleveland/Akron area so when would be the best time to visit. We were thinking that late August would fit into our schedule, but are open to other dates. Any help would be appreciated.

The north is regarded as the best of the three courses (yes, better than the south) by a lot of people. I would for sure go 1 round on the south, 1 round on the north. August will likely be pretty hot, but if you go right before or right after the Bridgestone, you could likley play the south with all the grandstands up. Have a great time!

Well, after calling them today, it doesn’t appear I will have much choice in when I go. Only two nights available in August and September. Going middle of September. I would imagine it’s still pretty nice that time of year.

North over West by miles. West is a lot of target golf and North is just a great course and a lot of water. Have to play South because of the tournament but I actually really like it a lot. Many people say boring but for we non pros it is a great test.

North is better than South IMO, so don't miss that one.

  • For another round, try Boulder Creek, Windmill Lakes or the Quarry in Canton.

  • Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is really worth the time for any football fan.

  • Grab a burger at Swensons, multiple locations around Akron/Canton - report back after you do. Best burger in the country IMO

I have nothing to add of value here other than September will be an awesome time to be up there. September and early October may be the best golf months in Ohio. That's also when Ohio State Football season starts so Saturdays are much less than busy (especially in Columbus).

Manakiki and Hawthorne Valley are old Donald Ross designs in the Cleveland area. Manakiki is normally in great shape, Hawthorne can be a little spotty. Sleepy Hollow in Brecksville is also a great option. 1925 Stanley Thompson design but it gets a lot of play. Also, Fowlers Mill in Chesterland is a beautiful Pete Dye design. A little pricey, but it would be my choice. Enjoy the trip!

These are the publics to hit in greater Cleveland. Hawthorne has it's moments, but if you've only got one or two rounds, don't bother with it. I'll also echo that the North is the way to go after playing the South. The West is fine, but unmemorable in the scheme of things. You'll remember 16-18 at the North for sure, especially if you rinse a few...

  • 3 months later...

I played manakiki a couple weeks ago and it’s in great shape, probably even better now since we’ve had a little rain the past couple weeks. Sleepy is always nice. I grew up in that area and played there a lot. If you’re staying at Firestone you might want to check Boulder creek or windmill lakes in Ravenna. Boulder being the first option.
