Thoughts on taking kids to US Open 2018 practice round?

I am toying with idea of taking my 6 and 9 year old girls to US Open practice round. They both love golf and want to go. Its a bit of a process to get there due to proximity on LI, plus would have to take them out of school for the day. I haven't been to a practice round since last one at Bethpage. I remember thinking how great it was due to the access to players and how laid back they are compared to tournament days. My girls are not going to be able to walk the entire grounds all day either. Very curious on any thoughts....

Take them on Tuesday, everyone will be there. One average day of school will not be memorable, a day with you walking around rich guy country watching the best play golf will be a memory.

Why wouldn't you take them. Taking my 9 yo to 3 days of the PGA championship this year.

Absolutely take them..it will bring memories and a love of golf for a lifetime.

Go and have fun. Pick a green or tee box and sit there all day.

Take them. At that age missing a day of school isn’t an issue.

Do it, its a large historic property with tremendous views and you can take the train back and forth to basically the door easily.The crowds and players are more casual and theyll enjoy it more. If you get the chance do it. youll love it and you can take a many pics and videos as you want to show the kids later when they grow up. Have fun!!!

What little kid doesnt want to miss school in june no less!!! My dad playing hookie with me and my brother to take me to ball games and golf tourneys was the best. My mother still to this day doesnt know or believe that was happening!!!

Little late to the game but thats exactly the age and how my dad started taking us. If we could only recapture the excitement of the tour when we were that young and impressionable. Fun times for sure. Give them that joy.

Additionally, considering your girls love golf....I assume driving to Atlantic City won't be an issue if you're also heading to the USO on LI in 2 weeks.

The LPGA is playing the Shoprite Classic in AC from June 8-10...you could take your girls to the event on Saturday or Sunday and not pull then from school.

The LPGA pros love kids and your girls will have a blast interacting with the pros after their rds or well before their rds and if they ask nicely....many of the LPGA pros will give them an autographed ball or something.

All kids under 17 enter for free and it will be $15 for you....there are other free admission promos (see below) and if your own a Shoprite card....I think it's free admission too.

They are old enough that even a Thursday or Friday round would be fine.

I've taken my son to the Farmers every year; he's 8 years old now. He loves it. It's been one of the most rewarding things we've done together (and we even play together every sunday).

What we do -

Pick the group we want to follow. If they go off on 1, we go to three tee box and wait. Then 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18. We get six excellent looks at the players teeing off.

Eat before you go. Pack a few kids cliff or Z bars. That gets my son through the day.

The uber or public transportation will be horrendous on the way out. Pick a spot to walk to, then uber. As in, where the ubers are coming towards the venue - you can cherry pick one.

Just being out of school is worth it at that age, so enjoy the day, and props to you, dad!

Not sure why you asked about this. You know your kids better then we do...

My advice though is to just plan things out a bit. Make sure you have seating (blanket would be the easiest) some snacks and then do try to to overdo things.

Ok isn't cheap, but 42.50rt from nyc but you won't have to deal w/ hassles of traffic, accidents, LIE and parking which is probably at least $20. I hear general parking is about 20mi away or 30min via shuttle. Glad again to be in the Vol lot 1 town over.

Usually after leaving the green or sometimes after the tee shot depending on the player. Bring your own sharpie and item to sign. The tournament hat and pin flags are always popular.

You'ld better be a dew sweeper if you want El Tigre. He's usually gone by 9ish.

Moving around and lines are far shorter or non-existent during practice days.

Otherwise, lmk which day your coming and I can give you tips where best places to go.

Will be on course inside ropes at least everyday th-sun.

I took my kids out of school when they were 9 & 12 to go to a tournament. They remember that day fondly... So do it!

I'm sure they will sign in between holes too. Most of them anyways. Tiger, Phil, and Rickie always sign after their rounds though.

I see Tiger has 7:18 tee time and going off back 9. Assume that means he is just planning 9 holes for the day? Would he be typically be gone after that or would he maybe hit range/putting green after? Not sure can get out there in time.

From observations at Oakmont 2016, lots of autos in between holes of you find the right spot! There were a couple choke points but exiting a green is where people seemed to be the most successful. Pros were spotty around range and putting green since they are technically at work there but keep your elbows high in that crowd. The adults trying to cover flags with autographs, presumably to sell on eBay, were despicable. It was a show. Best of luck and report back!

If I were you I would go either Thursday or Friday. For a major I would not go through all that trouble for a practice round. And you don’t have to worry about missing your favorites on a tournament day if you get there early. Also living in the area years ago everyday is a PITA as far as traffic. So may as well put all the effort for the real thing. You can always drop by the range to watch them hit.

Well on shuttle back from the course. Wanted to thank everyone for your input, was one of the best days ever as a dad! What a great event to spend with my two girls.
