Cutting down irons. Going from midsize to regular grips

Just picked up a set of mizuno mp59s with dynamic gold sl s300 shafts. Bought them second hand. They where built 1" long including the mp t11 wedges that came with the set. They currently have gp mcc +4 midsize grips. Will be putting on standard size +4 grips and cutting them down 1". Is a 14gram difference in grip weight enough to not change the swingweight to much? Also how will this effect the lie angle?

IF you go by what the SW scale will read, -1" will drop the SW ~6 SW pts, -14 gm grip change will increase the SW scale reading by ~3 pts.

But that's not the complete picture - what the SW will end up as will depend on where they started and that depends on:

1) whether the original build changed the head weight to compensate for the heavier grips or not? If they did not (and many do not), you'll still could end up at ~6 SW pts below the 'stock' sw value (whatever that might be for that combination of head, shaft and length).

2) how well were they able to compensate for the +1" in the original build. They might currently be on the heavy side of things because of the over length build if they couldn't find light enough heads.

Do you know what the current SW is for those clubs?

And, No. Changing length does not change the lie angle.

As far as I know he ordered them from mizuno that way. I guess I'll have the shop do the 3 iron first as a test since I dont normally play it in my set. And possibly go with the undersized +4 in my irons.

A test with one iron would probably be good. Have them do the work and then check to see how the SW turns out.

And don't mess with the grips just for the purpose of trying to manage swing weight. Swing weight management is ONLY about managing the head weight. Contrary to what a SW scale will read, butt weight is largely irrelevant for most in that particular context.

Sounds good. I'm currently playing 1/2" long in my irons and they came as d3 from the factory. Got them extended on a whim a few years back. I'm just worried it will be to big of a jump. Been toying with the idea of going back to std length in those for a bit. Until I got these. I'll talk with the shop when I drop them off in a couple hours. Thanks for your help.

It depends a bit on specifically why you are interested in trying std length but personally, I'd just have them remove the extensions first (go back to +1/2"), then you can test std length by choking up. That would be better then going down a full inch and later finding you want to go back to +1/2".

If the original owner of these clubs ordered from Mizuno overlength, They will have used different heads (lighter I believe) for the over length build. you may need to add a decent amount of lead tape to get them to the swing weight you like after chopping them down.

Ya. I'm gonna have them do the 3 iron at 1/2" over and check and go from there.

Got them to the shop. They weren't busy so they did the 3 iron while I waited. They where built to 1" over. They are light weight shafts so I'm thinking std weight heads or tip weights. 3 iron measured at d3 with 1/2" cut and standard grips. Will be doing that with the rest of the set.

Not that it makes much difference in what you're planning to do but ...

unfortunately shaft weight isn't much of a predictor for converting SW to head weights. Balance points vary way too much. It's easily possible to move to lighter shafts and get a heavier swing weight for some combinations. Most lighter weight TT shafts tend to balance similarly to the heavier ones - although I can't remember hearing anything specific about the DG SL's if that's the case or not. If that is the case, the heads could still be a little bit lighter than standard.

1/2" made all the difference. And the mcc +4 is a phenomenal grip. I cant be more pleased with how these turned out. Thanks for the help everyone.
