Fade turned to slice - drill to close the face more

Recommended Posts

Little background

A year ago I decided to move to a fade. Drew the ball for about 25 years but wanted a bit more consistency. The fade came rather naturally but about March I started to regress a bit and my fade started turning into a slice. What's worse is that it's a typical slicer's slice...starts right and goes right.

I can't post videos unless someone knows how to get a video out of V1.

I can show positions, club to parallel the clubface matches my spine angle or is closed...consistently. too of the swing the clubface is more skyward than toe down, again, a bit closed. My move down starts slightly OTT. My hands get over the backswing plane just slightly. Backswing is slightly above the address shaft plane.

I'm a 1 handicap (tho that'll likely go up in the coming months with scores I've posted lately).

Did a flightscope session today. 6 iron I was consistently 1.5 to 4 degrees left with path and clubface 1.5 to 5 degrees open to target line. Driver was aboit the same pathwise but the face was open 2.5-7.5 to target (not to path).

When I moved to the fade I accentuated a hold off left hand. I had very active hands with the draw and wanted the clubface square as long as possible. I think my path was between 0 and 2 degrees for most of last year...wqs hitting beautiful soft fades with every club.

I need a drill to close the clubface more. Is the best thing to just over accentuate a hard release in a practice session...like hit some hard snap draws so I get the toe turning over more? My path is perfect for the fade. Face angle needs to close down several degrees...

Thanks.

Just adjust your grip.

Tried that, didn't close the face. I've always had a strong-ish grip. I'd rather work on release. Pretty sure it's just gotten too hold-offish thru impact.

One thing I did note, when I dropped the club a bit more in the transition the face closed a bit, but not consistently to where it was closed to target.

May a closed stance Ed

Worked on that and with the 6 iron it helped. But with the driver it just brought my backswing inside.

I'm still thinking some release work will fix things.

Tinkering shows promise with the following:

Ball position back just a bit, literally 1-2 inches. Ball position got a little forward as I worked to get my path left.

Get more "on top" of the ball at address. I get setup too far behind and then slide into impact. The caveat here is that I HAVE to stay back with the driver, at impact, not at address.

I also noticed that if I'm just a bit less on top of the plane going back then I'm shallower on the way down. I'll keep an eye on this. I don't want to get inside on the way back. If ball position and address correct my problem then I won't worry about backswing path.

Add left wrist flexion on the downswing. Look up motorcycle drill by Tyler ferrel.

Thanks. I worked on release drills and they helped. But ball position and address required less change so if the next couple range sessions produce the same results then I'll take the same swing with better fundamentals...

try to get the clubhead below or inside of the handpath on the way down. forget about the hand path and squaring at impact and instead focus on clubhead path and clubface being square to closed on downswing. also try to get your hands deeper in backswing which can encourage an inside out hit. on the downswing, where is the face (open, square, or closed) when shaft is parallel to ground?

#1 Wrists:

Hold your left hand up in front of you.

- Bend your left wrist back like you are holding a waiters tray. Thats right side of the fairway. Do that less.

- Bend your left wrist forward. Welcome back to the left side my friend. Do that more from the start of your backswing through it.

#2 grip:

Hold the grip so it lays almost 90* across the base of your fingers.

When you look down at your grip, turn your hands so your left thumb is at 3 o clock on the grip

#3 Release:

Let the club fall through the ball and roll PAST your hands.

Combine all three and you will be in snap hook heaven. Back each one off to get back to middle.
