Best new set of 8 irons you can build for under $200

If you were given a budget of only $200 for hardware (excluding labor) to build the best possible set of 8 irons with only new components (no used bargains), what components would you use?

Here are some ideas that I found online today:

Option 1:

Heads: Acer XV Tour Blade [4-GW] - $15 x8 = $120 or Alpha Silver Diamond MDC Tour (also $120)

Shafts: FST 115 - $6 x8 = $48

Grips: TackiMac Tour Select = $3 x8 = $24

Shipping: $8

Total: $200

Option 2:

Heads: Acer XV Pro - $10 x8 = $80

Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold Pro = $73 (for set of 9 shafts: 3-PW, SW)

Grips: Champ C8 = $3 x8 = $24

Shipping: $22

Total: $199

Ferrules, epoxy, grip tape etc. assumed to be available already.

I'd go for Option 2. The Acer XV Pro are excellent heads. Really awesome feel and the size of Ping i-series clubs. Those clubs would rival a set several times are much money.

I made a set of irons, but only the 6-sw (7 clubs) for about $250. To me, it's a great way to go because you take pride in what you build and it really isn't difficult at all. I don't think I would ever buy a new set of irons again from a major manufacturer, I will always build my own. The irons play great!

The first set I ever built was the Acer XS Pros 4-PW, Apollo stepless, GP tour wraps. They are still my gamers, ex except I play a 4H in place of 4I. I also added inazone 50, 54, 58 wedges. I built them all for less than $200. I cant see any OEM clubs doing anything to lower my scores.

every time I see a WTB for .355 shafts I direct them to RBG for these shafts. If you have .370 bore hosels SHIM T from golfworks will work perfect for you.

That deal was on eBay, but 2 years ago in 2018, unfortunately. The best deal for new DG Pro 3-PW that I can find now is about $140.

Oddly, I just put about $200 into a set of adams cmbs... $50 on the heads here, $100 on pulled shafts and $50 on grips.

Honestly, on that budget, if I had to have brand new, I’d build my set with a Sw, Pw, 8, 6, & 4 iron only. With only 5 clubs, I’d still end up paying $40 just for the grips I like.

On second thought, I couldn’t do it. I’d rather spend more and get what I like. Even if I had to pass up playing and saving up greens fees to put towards the irons I really wanted.

Under $200 for all new seems to be cutting it pretty tight. To me getting decent quality shafts (very important) would use a large portion of the budget and is the key item. Most decent quality shafts are typically between $20 and $30 each. I don't know if I would want to trust (or expect much performance from) a shaft under $10. So for under $200 I would likely look at used clubs that when new would have cost much higher. In the end its your money and your decision.

I have Apollo Acculite 95s, and don’t see any discernible difference when I hit KBS, Nippon or Project X.

Realizing this is an old thread. If the original poster just wants to try building clubs then fine. Have at it. I did this years ago when I was starting out in golf. I just looked at the Golfworks site and selecting their cheapest head, shaft, and grip came up to about $260. This doesn't include tax and shipping. So getting under $200 is going to be tough. I'm sure there are cheaper dealers around but I'd then worry about quality. A decent set of used clubs may make more sense. Todays prices are crazy. You can easily spend over $100 just to buy a decent set of grips.

Karma Velour grips are $23 shipped for 13 grips. I bought some and they are 90% as nice as Crossline and Tour Velvet grips..

That leaves about $100 for heads, which is doable. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the Acer heads are nice.
