Tiger's Wedge Grooves - right on the edge of legal

I don't think I have ever read about this topic, but like all of Tiger's wedges in the past, TaylorMade did not put the grooves in these wedges.... TM delivered a blank face and then Tiger has his own guy in Dallas that hand cuts the grooves for ONLY Tiger. The initial cut is taken just over the legal limit and then a hand process of sanding the edges of the grooves brings them back to the legal limit.

Last week Rory tried to get TM to do the same grooves as Tiger has, and that is when TM told him that it was impossible to have done because Tiger has this groove guy in Dallas on a retainer where the only wedges he hand cuts the grooves on are for Tiger.

This seems perfectly plausible to me. Tiger’s TM wedges and irons have MT’s serial etc. The series detailing Artisan from the directors here have given great detail of how Artisan works.

I never said Mike from Artisan made them.... it was assumed by some seeing I mentioned Dallas. TM didn't do the grooves, they provided blank faces so Tiger could have his own grooves done the way he likes them.

I’d bet a boatload of money that Mike did some very extensive “consulting” work on those wedges and got a hefty check from TM and a non disclosure agreement to sign.

He was asked "are you grinding any wedges for him right now?". He answered "no, not right now". Tiger could've been sitting on his TM wedges for some time. Also we have no idea when this was filmed.

"No, not RIGHT NOW". Plenty of room for ambiguity.

I suspect that every club in Tiger's bag is right at the edge of conforming. As are all the clubs that every player on tour plays.

would put money on that TM took one of tigers Nike wedges that MT did in the past and digitally laser measured it then put it into a CAD program and had the sole milled exactly the same, if you look at the pics of the wedges they have the mill lines on the entire sole, so doesn't look like must if any hand work was done on his current set. which is smart so they can give Tiger replacement wedges that are exactly the same every time

If you read this article, Mike Taylor sent TM grinds that he knew Tiger liked and then it sounds like TM milled them in house. The article also says that Taylor built the wedges, which I would assume just entailed shafting and gripping them how Tiger has always played his wedges. So, while Taylor didn't grind those specific wedges, it sounds like he had extensive input and TM basically recreated his design.

    https://www.pgatour.com/equipmentreport/2018/05/30/tiger-woods-taylormade-milled-grind-wedges-memorial.html

They also appear to still have Artisan (Mike Taylor) style serial numbers on the hosel.

There is no way Tiger isn't going to make sure they are legal before using them in competition, it would not be worth the risk for him.

This is how urban legend stuff gets rolling. No way wedges are cut past point of conformity and then dulled by inconsistent hand process- cut to precise tolerances right up to line of conformity within rules with proper radius, displacement, etc. absolutely.

Silly. Hand cut. Goodness. Read Wishons explanation on groove manufacturing. The tolerances are so minute. There’s no way they can be performed by hand. He even says plenty don’t conform when made by Machine. It’s that tight. They aren’t all checked once that model is on the conforming list anyway. Plenty of “ illegal grooves “ running around. No way to know.

The custom cut grooves do not make a huge difference. It's the fact that the wedges are soaked 72 hours in Unicorn blood.

Not the same. Paddy had every other iron cut with box grooves or similar. That way he essentially had more irons. Some would spin back. Some release. But that’s before they were illegal. Only same if tigers were illegal now. You cant cut a groove any more close to legal than some retail grooves are now. Ever play a Vega or yuyuri wedge ? You get pieces of ball cover in every pitch shot in between the grooves. And they are legal.

If tigers are that sharp I’d be shocked , but so what if they are. It isn’t a rarity on tour. And certainly not something Rory couldn’t have if he wanted.
