Recent Mizuno irons not as soft as the old?

The 900 Tour donโ€™t have boron; I play them. The 900F do have boron.

ย

I felt the 18s were soft and comparable to the MP4 which I felt were one of the best feeling irons by Mizuno.

ย

As for my 900T, they arenโ€™t as soft as the MP64 which they modeled off but performance wise, the 900T are ahead at the expense of a little softness.

ย

As for softness, there can be something as too soft that can be dislike by some like myself.

ย

ย

It's the boron

ย

JPX 900 tours have boron and that might explain it, but the MP18s also felt clickier compared to MP 64s I hit side by side. (Although marginally softer than the JPX900 tours)

The Boron models definitely don't feel as good. It's one of the reasons I've kept my older JPXs.

Last real soft feeling true MP was the MP5.

ย

My 53s feel better then the 900T and the entire 18 line.

ย

Edit: That said, Bridgstone (Endo) Forging puts all of them to shame. My J15 are the softest feeling CBs (non boutique) irons on the market.

How did the 900s outperform 64s for you? I found them to be less forgiving.

Play a softer ball. A chrome soft or the like can make Pings feel like Mizunos.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

I'm going to go for a REALLY unpopular opinion, but I wasn't impressed with the feel of the MP-18's I hit at all - I could barely feel the ball being struck, which was strange. They somehow turned a range rock into a Penfold Commando, dread to think what they'd be like with a proper ball.

ย

Tried a set of Vega VM-01's afterwards, now THEY felt awesome. Right combination of heft and smoothness. ยฃ1500 more awesome than my trusty old Nikes? Not a chance, sadly.

My mp54s feel softer than anything I've ever hit. Makes me want to try some of the older stuff to compare. Being LH, can't try everything unfortunately.

The 900T just gave me the optimal launch and spin rate over the 64 and 18s as much as I prefer the looks of those mentioned two over the 900T; so I took performance over looks and softness.

ย

Not that I disagree with the OP on Mizunoโ€™s line up, but this whole discussion on softness is literally overrated. Iโ€™ve hit ping cast irons and they felt softer than Mizunos and Miura, and who is to say no when you can pure it?

there is a massive difference in feel from my Mp25(Boron) to Mp5(no Boron).

ย

I hit the new Mp 18 mb and to me there was not much difference to the mp5 except the Mp18 8/9 looked far nicer.

ย

Interesting to see what the new JPX Tour will look like at address.

I feel the 18s are definitely softer than the 25s! Then again maybe I'm just striking them better and have a different shaft!

The 25 and 5 are a different clubhead design so you can't attribute the difference in feel to the boron in the 25s. Unless Mizuno makes two identical clubheads, one with and one without boron, no one can definitively say that the boron is why they don't like the feel of a certain club.

True but that won't ever happen.

ย

Even when there was major design differences between models of old (mp5, mp52, mp64 etc etc) that soft feeling was universal among those. But something changed and it went away.. for me, since mp15.

ย

Glad to know I wasn't the only one feeling like this. I was scoffed at when I brought this idea up. Scrw them.

Iโ€™m of the opinion that boron does not change the feel to any extent we can feel. They use something like .0003% boron. Plus I donโ€™t think a company that prides themselves on the saying โ€œnothing feels like a mizunoโ€ would use boron if it meant sacrificing feel. I truly believe it is the design or shaping of the clubhead that changes the feel.

ย

I think this is a bit nit picky if Iโ€™m being honest. If you donโ€™t think a mizuno blade feels good then your choices of irons are going to be quite limited. Iโ€™m not saying mizuno is the softest out there but they are certainly up there.

Softest so far has been MP-54. I've hit the MP-25's and they were not as soft, not even by a mile. Same with JPX900F.

ย

Love my 790's... not exactly soft but I don't get that clicky feel I got with others. I'm not in the iron market and I love how forgiving my 790's are but I'd love to give some J15's a go.

The Boron increases the tensile strength of the metal allowing them to reduce the thickness of the face. A super thin faced iron is not going to feel soft and solid like a thicker forging. They don't need additional strength in a solid forging so it's not added. The clickiness of the Boron infused itmrons comes from the design, super thin face, not the material. I still play MP54's, which are super soft, but you can tell a difference in the irons with the milled slot. Milled slot on 54's is thick compared to the MP25 and 900F (which had to be milled from the bottom).
