Callaway Great Big Bertha 2016

So I’ve played the DBD version of this club for a long time with a brief stop at the epic. However after getting the normal great big Bertha I’ve picked up 15 yards just because the spin rates are suprisingly lower with a higher launch.

This driver has out preformed the epic, rogue and dbd for me, is it just me that is hitting this longer than everything else or are other people seeing the same thing?

Best part is because it’s old I got it practically brand new for $100.

Its not just you. I have played the GBB since it was introduced. Its one of the best drivers Cally ever made. I also have the Epic and a few other callaway drivers from the past and the GBB is as long and straighter than my Epic at the moment. I easily gained yards going from my Ping, and the XR to the GBB.

I am trying to like the Epic but right now the GBB is so good, i don't want to mess with it.

Yeah on paper this makes no sense for me as a high spin player, and I’ve always played a smaller or smaller profile head.

But this thing just goes, it comes off like a bullet and then the decent angle is so good that, after it carries for a week and a half, it rolls for another.

I've wasted a lot of money on drivers thru the years. Not easy to get fitted round here and I like previously owned. I look for bargains and tend to buy on impulse, I'm always looking for a few yards and always disappointed,. Guess I've bought and sold 2 or 3 drivers a season over the last decade.

But, nearly 3 years ago I picked up a GBB. Not only was it straighter than a K15 which I thought was miraculously straight it was and continues to be a genuine 15 yds longer than anything I,ve ever hit. I've since put it up against the Epic and the Rogue. For me it's better than both.

I've stopped looking at drivers but I've bought 6 wedges in the last 5 weeks.

I went the other way from GBB to 816 DBD. For me, the DBD launches lower (same stated loft) and is easier to move left to right. Both are pretty low spin with a good shaft.

I think I slightly prefer the look of the GBB, but it ultimately had a bit too much draw bias for me.

2016 GBB was/is a very solid driver. It was my favorite driver they’d released since one of the FT models I used to play.

I did end up in the Epic after fitting but it was mostly an overall fit change. Ballspeed was within 2-3 mph of the Epic. It’s a good club.

I have played the GBB since 2016.

I have bought and tried every single driver since 2016. Guess which driver is still in the bag?

Best driver Callaway has ever made. The GBB epic came close.... but was not as consistent off the tee.

Yeah definitely does have a good amount of draw bias, I play mine open, as well as with a little hot melt so that the weighting is also neutral.

Ive tried the epic and the rogue head on my tour ad shaft to get an apples to apples test, and neither of them are any longer or straighter for me, the epic was actually a little shorter, and the rogue produced almost identical numbers.

I have this theory that Callaway didnt market the GBB as well as the should have and have just used the same tech for the epic and the rogue with better marketing campaigns. :)

Lol!

Came on this eve to ask this same question.

GBB is still in my bag. Demoed the Epic last year but it couldn’t kick the GBB out.

Was interested to see how folks like the Rogue in comparison as I’ve read so many glowing reviews.

My GBB is set at standard loft and weighting but it does give me the option if I choose ( had it higher lofted until my new swing for this season for back issues). Concerned that the Rogue doesn’t allow for any adjustments.

Considering the high cost of the Rogue I’m not jumping at it for just 3-4 yards or the occasional miss hit.

I didn’t even see the extra yards on the miss hits with the rogue the only difference I saw was I think the head has a bigger profile and a little more weight, it was harder to work the ball (which could be a good thing for some and I get that).

I still game mine. I purchased it when it first came out. Still blowing it by my playing partners. I love everything about this driver!

I know hitting the driver far is A LOT about technique etc... but interesting to me is, i played in league tuesday night against a guy who had a monster swing. He also out weighed me by at least 25 lbs and was just as in shape or athletic. He was hitting a TM rocketbalz driver that he was fitted for a few years ago. When he hit the ball it sounded like a crack of lightening straight down the fairway. Entire group was like "wow, you smashed that"... I would then pull out my GBB take a nice controlled smooth swing right down the center. Each drive 7 times on 9 holes, i was further by an average of 15 yards. Sometimes i was 25+ yards ahead of him further down the fairway. The GBB is for real. its just such a great driver if you can control the draw bias.

Great driver ! I always wished i could find the elusive additional sliding weight . I saw pics of a couple of tour guys having two weights in their GBB. I only benched it as I couldn't find that weight and it seemed to have a slight draw biased that often resulted in hooks. Hideky has gamed it forever i think he may have just changed from it this yr.

Funny that you should bring the 2016 GBB up. I played the Alpha version and moved into the Epic, but I've been having some trouble lately with it so I tried my son's GBB with the shaft from the Alpha and...BINGO!. A perfect combo for me, long and straight with a nice flight. Now my only problem is having to buy my son a new driver! :)

  • 2 years later...

I came to the conclusion around 2015 that I had spent thousands of dollars on golf equipment(this site was not helpful) wityh no change in my handicap and I bought a BB Alpha 12* regular and have hit it ever since.

May never buy another driver.
