ProV1x vs 2018 Chrome Soft vs TP5

Hey Everyone,

I'm torn between these 3 premiums and I was just seeing if anyone else has compared these 3 and what their findings were.

Here's what i've noticed when comparing these 3:

The Chrome Softs are by far the softest of the 3, especially off of the putter, forgiveness in a ball is hard to measure but out of the 3, I would say the chrome softs are the most forgiving, especially on iron shots. Distance off the tee is quite "standard" for me. Wedge spin is high but not as high as some other balls ive tested in the past, iron spin is medium but looks alot higher with truvis. (looks can be deceiving)

Rating-

Distance: 8/10

Feel: 9/10

Spin: 9/10

Forgiveness: 10/10

The TP5's are excellent in the wind and far superior off the tee, I absolutely love the explosive feel that I get when I hammer one down the fairway (or rough LOL), feel is by far my favorite with this ball, not too soft, not too hard, just right. Forgiveness seems quite high for a ball at this caliber, alot of people experience low spin with the TP5's and I would have to agree to a certain extent but I wouldn't say that the spin is so low that you can't control approach shots to the green. Iron shots have lower spin but feel excellent and feedback is phenomenal. On the green the TP5's put out a very nice roll with a very soft yet bouncy feeling.

Rating-

Distance: 10/10

Feel: 10/10

Spin: 7/10

Forgiveness: 9/10

The ProV1x balls are probably the best all around ball out of these 3 for me. Tee shots are not as long as the TP5's but are longer than the Chrome Softs. Feel is soft yet solid. Iron and wedge spin is very very high and control with this ball is second to none. Green shots stop on a dime and iron shots have an excellent flight. Off the putter this ball feels very soft and responsive. I haven't spent enough time with this ball but so far its ticking all of the boxes, I love the control that I've had with this ball so far.

Rating-

Distance: 8/10

Feel: 9/10

Spin: 10/10

Forgiveness: 9/10

I don't have much love for the chrome soft, I do like the PROV1x but my current preference is for the TP5x.

It ticks all of the boxes for distance, control in the wind, and spin around the greens.

I don't like a soft feeling ball fwiw.

How are the TP5x’s? I’ve been curious, my only concern with them is approach control? From what I’ve known they are a very low spinning ball... have you had any issues with stopping power?

I have played the current generation ProV1x (quite a bit), TP5 (about 8-10 rounds) and had played a good bit with the original Chrome Soft a couple years ago. To me the Chrome Soft (going by memory) and the TP5 are just about interchangeable. Can't say I noticed any difference between them, they are both pretty normal urethane balls.

The ProV1x flies higher than either of the other two off the driver. Otherwise, pretty similar to TP5, Chrome Soft or other urethane models.

Played v1x for years. Switched to tp5x and loved them. Bit more firm for me, but plenty of spin and feel around greens. Would have stayed but mobbed to b330rx and just the best all around for me personally. I thing v1x and tp are superior to chrome soft, and can’t go wrong with either.

Kinda feel like you need to compare the tp5x to the v1x rather than tp5.

That being said, I've been using the tp5 for the better part of this year and have been happy with the spin rate off irons. I'm not a big fan of too much spin, just ends up further away from the hole more often than not. My long irons hold the greens just fine most the time with the tp5. I don't play a draw though, so I can understand others needing more spin.

Enjoyed your overall review though, that was nice.

TP5 is the perfect ball IMO. Low-ish spin off the driver, high-ish spin off everything else. Chrome soft is TOO soft and feels like mush. ProV1X sounds and feels a little firm although it's gotten better as years go on. I used to not be able to play 1X because it felt so firm off the putter.

Yesterday I had my TP5 in play and it was 5-10 yards longer than a Vice Pro Soft and I somehow ended up hitting a 220yard 3h that stopped 1ft from the flag on a par 5 2nd shot. Felt lovely and flight was perfect.

Nice review!

Have you by chance ever compared these balls to the Z-Star and/or Z-Star XV?

Just curious where they might sit since I bought some a short time ago during the big Srixon sale! :)

Yes! I have a few sleeves of Z Star XV’s left in my bag, I’ve used them for a few rounds a couple of months ago and I enjoyed them, great feel and surprisingly great spin with the irons, only thing I didn’t really like is the driver numbers I was producing with the XV’s, distance was left short a lot of the time I just couldn’t make them work for me, not saying they’re a bad ball at all just not for me.

Been testing a lot lately with ProV1x and TP5x which to me are very close to the same feel (that's subjective). Tried the new Chrome Soft yesterday for the very first time....thinking it was a marshmellow and wouldn't work at all. Wow was I surprised !!! Did not see any loss of distance Driver, irons, etc. My short game spin was much better which I was looking for. Chrome Soft was a bit softer off the Putter....but that worked out just fine.

Overall...my preconceived notions were wrong---the Chrome Soft IS a decent ball !!

Z start tours did not test well for me....I have 3 sleeves if anyone wants to trade something.....the chromesoft and TP5's are much better and very very similar. No true amateur can really tell a huge difference imo

If you mean the Q-Star Tours, I agree! I bought three dozen and didn't seem to work for me like my usual Chrome Soft's so I have three dozen less one sleeve to get rid of?

Anyone wanna do a trade for a yellow ball like Z-Star or Z-Star XV or Chrome Soft's in yellow or truvis?

  • 1 month later...

As an older guy trying to hang onto his game, I have switched to CS (and not x) from Pro V1. I am the oldest guy in a league that plays from the men's tees and finding fairways and greens is important when you are the shortest off the tee. I don't try to work the ball very often and low straight flight is generally preferred. I test balls on three holes at a course where I am a member. I start with a 550 yd pair 5 and then I cut over to a par 4 and par 3 to get back. I track shots with my Phantom GPS and usually hit 2 balls side by side. There are a couple of simulators there, but I prefer real world conditions. On the par 5 in neutral wind conditions I am generally inside 150 yds for my third shot with TP5 and CS, and outside of 150yds with most everything else I have tried(including the "distance" balls). Around the green there isn't much difference for me in the premium balls. Maybe this is relevant to only people with low 90's swing speed, but I score better with the CS and the price is better too.
