Choosing the right clubs

What clubs to have in your bag
I was wondering what you all carry in your bags, like degrees/lofts on the clubs. I am debating whether or not to buy a 52* gap wedge...any tips? Feel free to state your bag and the degree/lofts of your clubs.

My bag is:

Titleist 905R 9.5*

V Steel 3W 15*

V Steel 5W 19*

Rescue Hybrid *22

Titleist 690.cb's

Cleveland TA 588 56*

Vokey SM 60*

Between my PW and SW I have like a 30 yard gap. Do you all think I should get a 52* wedge?

I don't tend to vary my set-up much. The clubs I play are all pretty constant and the only change I typically make is to put a 2 iron in the bag for certain courses rather than the 1 iron that I usually bag.

I've got a good spead of carry distances, with no glaring yardage gaps with the set that I'm playing, and my wedge selection allows me to play anywhere and on a variety of courses without changing anything. I carry a high bounce sand wedge and a low bounce lob wedge that can cope with any conditions from wet and lush through to tight and parched lies.

The only real choice I make is that one between a 1 or a 2 iron (I never carry both) depending upon the course I'm playing, and the number of long approaches that require a high shot v the usefulness of another option from the tee that my 1 iron gives me.

Obviously it is very personal but i carry a 52* and 58* b/c my PW is 46* and it gives more piece of mind knowing that each wedge as a specific function, unlike a 4 wedgee set up where IMO jobs overlap and for me cause confusion. Only carrying a total of 3 wedges, which i am comfortable with, frees up a spot at the top of my bag so there are more options. Again, this is all up to you, your game, preferences, etc. You could do a search b/c i am pretty sure i've read a number of other post about similar topics.

i usually dont hit my gap wedge on my home course because i never have a 120 yard shot. It is usually 150, 200, or 60 yards that i have to deal with. there is only one par three that i use it on. But on other courses that i play during the HS season, i use it all the time. it really depends on how many courses you play.

The choice of clubs in a bag is so personal to your game and swing that it is hard to state definitives here.

Wishon's 'Search for the Perfect Club' has a lot of good information on bag makeup. See if you can get a copy.

In general, try to get consistent yardage gaps of 10 - 15 yards with the irons, maybe 15 or so with the woods / hybrids. Your choice of wedges will vary with distance and yardage and shot style preference, as well as what courses you play. Sometimes you might also switch out fairway woods and hybrids or if you can hit 'em long irons depending on the course.

If you listen to Dave Pelz and Jesse Ortiz we should all be carrying four wedges. But I don't. Like it has already been said in this post you have to find a set up that works for you. Whether it be 3 or 4 wedges just play what's in your bag and not someone else's. I have experimented with both and find that 3 wedges works. It may not for you. I have played with a few people who only carry two and it works for them. Phil Mickelson, in his younger years, had a pitching wedge and a high loft sand wedge and we all know he is one of the best wedge players in the world.

I decided to go with the gap wedge, becuase I often have shots from 115-105 yards out and had to big of a gap before I added it to the bag. Besides I don't need a 60, the 56 does everything I need it too.

That's my same reasoning on my wedges. I can open up the 56* plenty when called for called for as well.

It really is personal preference.

When you are 120 yards out what do you do? If you are having no issues taking a little off your PW or pushing your 54 or 56 a little extra, then you don't need a gap. If you find yourself unsatisfied with that shot, you have two options. 1) Don't ever be 120 yards out. 2) Buy a gap wedge, and drop a hybrid or 5w.

I carry a 52, 56, and 60 because I don't really need a 5 wood or a 3 iron. I can hit my 4 iron a good 220 and my hybrid anywhere from 230 to 260 (I just change the trajectory... needless to say it is not exactly always perfect haha), and if I'm anymore than 260 out from a green I'm probably laying up, as most of the courses I play on don't have wide openings to their par 5's.

Meanwhile, with my wedges I am confident that I can stick any shot under 125. I've been in a few situations, trying to protect a lead, where I laid up from ~240 yards to 120ish. I know that from that distance I have a good chance at giving myself a good look at birdie... but the worst possible outcome is a not-so-good wedge shot and two putts for par.... while long iron might give me an eagle, there's a chance a bad bounce or plugged lie could put me in a situation for a big number.
