Music on the course?

Recommended Posts

Two questions; who plays music via speaker when golfing and what are you typically listening to when playing?

Myself and my buddies usually have music playing, at a reasonable volume as to not disturb others who don't like it. Just wondering if you also have music and what you are listening to typically?

I use golf clubs, 14 to be exact!  Mostly my putter though!

If I'm by myself, I usually have something playing on my phone... nobody else needs to hear it...

I listen to everything...

I like to listen to music on the course. I used to take a speaker and now I wear ear buds. My son is a very good tournament golfer. He reads books all the time on the mental side of the game. He does not like and will not listen to music on the course or when practicing because a couple of the books suggested not to. Music brings to many emotions and memories to the plate whether good or bad and are not good for the course or practice. Sub-consciously music can make you feel happy, sad, depressed, angry, etc. etc. My daughter plays golf collegiality and listens to music when practicing and playing on the course. There may be a reason my son is a teenager and is better than her already.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

I really enjoy music, and have it playing pretty much everywhere, every day. But I won't listen to music on the golf course. And I won't play with anyone who has it playing where I can hear it.

Same here.

Here is my take via association:

Plays music on golf course = Likes Phil's shirt commercial

I used to be against playing music on the course. After being around it enough I now always have music playing. I listen to alternative rock when I play. It keeps me calm for some reason and I play better with it. When I play golf with country c on I get too angry lol. I guess something about the angrier music takes away my golf frustrations. I do keep it relatively quiet out of respect for the fellow golfers. If you are more than 15 feet from my cart you won't be able to hear it.

I listen to music in three cases:

1. Practice range, working on tempo. Have the earbuds in and some down-tempo stuff like Gregory Porter, trying to finish the backswing and calm my transition.

2. Occasionally playing alone late in the evening. This will be an upbeat, fun playlist. Guilty pleasure type stuff.

3. Wednesday night events at my club. These things take 2:45 to 3:00 to play 9 (we pack 27 holes with up to 270 players, so there's no playing quickly). If my group wants to listen to something interesting, they ask me to play one of my playlists. Funny how that is rarely the case! Most of the time the music gives us something different to talk about -- and to give each other grief for horrible taste. Last night one of the guys playing poorly fired up some 90's grunge stuff. He was in too foul of mood to care if we hated it.

Hey, I don't play music on the course. Or does the association not work both ways?

If you live long enough you will find people that like to ruin just about everything.

Can't be without my coffee.

Can't be without my music.

Can't be without my Mackensie bag.

I will drink my coffee quietly Sir. :)

Music is allowed on our course provided you are wearing ear buds and no one else hears it. Speakers will get you escorted off of the course. Cell phones are not allowed inside the nineteenth hole unless you are an MD. Our country club has a laundry list of policies that need to be addressed, in my opinion. I'd enjoy listening/sharing a little music on the course at a reasonable volume. My choice would be rock 'n roll from the 60s through the 80s.

Depends on your locale. For instance:

Does not play music on the course = Finds Phil's shirt video mildly amusing but would never divulge his true feelings about the video especially when standing at the non-partitioned center urinal.

Just watched that thing, and laughed my backside off. Phil's no dancer, for sure, but you have to be pretty comfortable in your own skin to make a vid like that.

My hat's off to Phil. :)

Hope you guys aren't counting your rounds for handicap while listening to music ...

Rule 14-3

Wearing Headphones or Earplugs During Stipulated Round

Q.May I wear headphones or earplugs while playing in the state amateur?

A.

The use of headphones or earplugs to eliminate noise or other distractions is prohibited under Rule 14-3.

Decision 14-3/16 covers listening to music or some other broadcast during a round. Here is the text of that Decision:

Rule 14-3a states that a player may not use any artificial device or unusual equipment that “might assist him making a stroke or in his play.” Listening to music or a broadcast while making a stroke or for a prolonged period might assist the player in his play, for example, by eliminating distractions or promoting a good tempo. Therefore, the use of an artificial device to listen to music or a broadcast, whether or not through headphones, while making a stroke or for a prolonged period of time during a stipulated round is a breach of Rule 14-3. However, it would not be a breach of Rule 14-3 for a player to listen to a device briefly, for example, to obtain the results of another sporting event or traffic information, while walking between the putting green of one hole and the teeing ground of another hole.

There is no restriction on listening to music or other broadcasts while practicing (whether on the practice ground or on the golf course, and whether by oneself or while playing with others), although club rules and disciplinary codes could apply in such circumstances.

I bring my speaker and there is always music playing in my cart.

I play anything that's listed under "Easy Listening" on Spotify usually, unless something specific comes up as a request from one of my playing partners. None of them ever oppose, and the music is low enough only to be heard by our immediate group. Usually the individual cart is all that can hear it anyway. I don't agree with loud music on the course, but listening to music in general helps tempo for me. You'll see numerous pro's using headphones on the range, I'd be willing to bet if it were allowed for them on the course you'd see more headphones out there on tour.

Oops caught cheating again..... What a stupid rule. Disco Dick Zokol would disagree as would anyu deaf golfer (who I now consider contravening the ROG).

We have music every weekend. Listen to all music from 70's on for the most part (from Pitbull to U2, Progressive, Rock, Dance, Hip Hop, Springsteen, Led Zeppeling, Bruno Mars.... I listen to podcasts when on my own.

I wish all the folks who say "yes, I listen to music in my cart, but I keep the volume to a respectable level" would come play the courses around me instead of the music listeners I encounter. I've lost count of how many times I've heard someone playing it from the next fairway over or 100 yards away. 5+ years ago I never heard music on the course, now it seems like it's every other time I play on a busy course.

Got banned at our club for that very reason. Sometimes even if at a level that you think is low it will carry across to other holes. I’m not a fan of it but I’m also not one to complain. But the guys that are ones to complain did and so music on the course went away.

First out so no one hears us until some holes on the back nine (near front nine) and then turn down the volume. Only need one crotchety old f@$t to ruin it for others.
