Whats the deal with poker chips?

Everyone should have to use the little plastic markers that stick in the gound

That way if you hit it your ball will run right over it

Everyone is using these giant thick poker chips that take up as much room and will stop your ball just like a ball would

so why even mark your ball if you are going to do that?

I use a poker chip as it is easy to fish out of my pocket but if I'm going to be near someone's line then I'll use the coin sized marker on my divot tool.

Pretty easy to ask your fellow playing partner to move his ball mark, no? I use a poker chip that has some sentimental value to me however, I know its bulky and I am always conscious to ask my playing partners if I can move my mark if I feel I am in the way.

There's one irascible old coot in our weekend group who doesn't much care for the poker chip thing (among many others). A new guy maybe 30 years old joined us one Saturday and had the really big, thick poker chip. The kind so big I can't imagine anyone would use them in an actual poker game.

Plops it down on the first green more or less vaguely in irascible old coot's line. The old guy walked over, replaced the "poker chip" with a penny, tossed it to the young guy and said, "You can keep the penny, I've got a pocket full".

No just easily annoyed.

They were asked not to play in the group unless they could be ready to putt when it was their turn. One guy left and didn't come back. So I guess in retrospect it would have been better for him to say, "Pardon me, kind sir. Would you be so kind as to replace your saucer-sized, annoying hunk of plastic with a smaller, less conspicuous coin or other traditional ball marker? I'll be glad to provide a penny if it would be helpful".

Key point here. Anything larger than a golf ball is just trying to call attention to yourself, the opposite of the purpose of a ball marker.

Maybe ask them to move their mark a couple of putter heads over.

What about just carrying the coin-sized marker? Without the giant poker chip in your pocket, you might be able to easily fish out the coin-sized marker. Heck, you might even have room to carry two coin-sized markers in your pocket. Then you'd have twice as good a chance of being able to fish one of them out of your pocket.

I usually have two or three of the teensy little flat plastic ones (dime sized with a little prong sticking out of the back) in my pocket during a round. Specifically to make it easy to grab one in and between the tees. I also end up marking someone else's ball for them at least once or twice a round so having multiple ones is nice.

I'm a line-on-the-putter guy. I always work on my pre-putt alignment while others are getting ready to putt their balls. Unless I can't because if by doing so, I'd be in someone else's way or in their line of sight. But doing a lot of the groundwork ahead of my turn probably makes me as fast, or faster than most guys' putting routines.

But to your point, I have seen line-on-the-putter guys who can be painfully slow.

Pretty sure i would have tossed “ get off my lawn geezer “ his penny back, put the chip away and put down a quarter.

Now we’re both reasonably happy, and i can make sure to dust him the rest of the round.

The amount of petty in people is hilarious. Someone ever picks up my chip and tosses it to me with some passive aggressive "Keep the penny" crap, we'd have a problem.

Coin sized is magnetic and fits a slot on the divot tool (purchased on a trip to RTJ trail site to see dad) and this marker on its own would be quite light and easy to lose if not on the divot tool when not in use.

As for the "we have a problem" I was waiting for the obligatory GolfWRX testosterone-intoxication cases to show up.

Seriously??? I could be wrong, but I don't believe the rules of golf specify that the marker has to be a certain size or type. I used to use a tee, some people use their divot tool...some people use a penny, some people use a poker chip. It's a marker for the ball that can be moved if requested.

Maybe you should focus on making your putt instead of what object other people use to mark. I'd throw that guy his penny back and go f himself.

I met Greg at the Farmers and he hooked me up with a GolfWRX chip. I don't care what object people use to mark I'll just ask them to move it (tees are fine too).

I've played with guys who use poker chips and play music during the round. 99% of them are fun to play with. Maybe instead of getting pissed about small things, you should just enjoy your round

The amount of entitlement in your statements is laughable. I think a majority of the social norms on this thread would agree that; (i) picking someones property up with some smart a** comment is unacceptable and (ii) telling what equipment one chooses to use is again, unacceptable.

Probably about the same amount as the "I have nothing better to complain about than the size of someone's marker" guys. But, these are the times we live in.
